Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer research, like research on other diseases, highly depends on representative and reliable model systems. In the Research Topic “Cancer Models”, we collected original papers and review articles addressing the topic of tumor modeling from molecular biology, biochemistry, microorganisms, cells and organoids, fishes, animals and xenografts, up to computational cancer models and patient data analysis. This representative eBook describes that there is not a single molecular defined tumor but rather a heterogenic and highly variable complex of different individual diseases. This is what makes research on cancer so difficult, expensive, and explains the broad number of models needed for research. Our authors describe new next-generation sequencing-based methods to analyze complex patterns of chromosomal aberrations in order to understand the molecular biology of tumorigenesis as well as the role of cellular senescence and dormancy in the aetiology of tumor formation and development of therapy resistance of tumors. The current developments on 3D cultures are thoroughly reviewed, as these models help to overcome the current limitations of cell cultures and allow a more accurate mimicry of the native cancer tissue, including cellular heterogeneity and restore specific biochemical and morphological. Reviews about tumor models in zebrafish, different transgenic mouse strains and pigs conclude the book. In the final two chapters of this volume, the authors discuss the theoretical and mathematical models developed in cancer research.

Book excerpt: Metabolic diseases and cancers account for half of all mortalities in the world, underscoring the significance of understanding the etiology of these diseases and developing effective therapies. Genomic research in the 21st century has brought cancer and metabolic disease, two once seemingly parallel ailments, as close to each other as they’ve ever been. Many genetic factors have been found to display functions regulating both cancer and metabolic disease. In this research topic: "Double-edged Swords: Genetic Factors That Influence The Pathogenesis of Both MetabolicDisease and Cancer", you will be introduced to individual genes, as well as genetic pathways that play important roles in influencing the progression of both metabolic disease and cancer. By no means covering an exhaustive list of genes qualified, this collection of articles rather serves as a precursor of what is yet to come in biomedical research. It paints the big picture of one of the major fields contributing to the future of “precision medicine”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes in detail all aspects related to endocrine and metabolic late effects observed in patients treated for cancer, both in childhood and adulthood. The chapters focusing on the possible pathogenic mechanisms of late effects (i.e., premature aging and chronic inflammation) and on bone health in cancer survivors are particularly interesting and innovative. The volume also deals with hypothalamic-pituitary, thyroid and gonadal disorders, including infertility and how to prevent it. Finally, the relationship between metabolic alterations and cardiovascular diseases in cancer survivors is addressed. Thanks to advances in cancer treatment and supportive care, the five-year survival rate of cancer patients is constantly increasing. However, this undisputable success of medicine has a flip side: the late adverse effects of anticancer therapies. Pediatric oncologists were the first to cope with late complications of treatments, but today also adult oncologists and onco-hematologists recognize the relevance of this issue. Even though late effects observed in cancer survivors can affect any organ or system, endocrine and metabolic dysfunctions are the most frequently reported. Endocrine complications rarely influence life expectancy of cancer survivors, but they can significantly impact morbidity and quality of life. Among endocrine adverse effects, severe hypothalamic damage may be considered the most harmful in survivors, leading to morbid obesity, propensity to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. This book aims to disseminate the knowledge about endocrine and metabolic adverse effects of cancer therapies and about survivorship care. Since the number of cancer survivors is steadily growing in the general population, this publication is intended not only for endocrinologists but also for oncologists, onco-hematologists, internists, pediatric specialists in those areas and general practitioners, with the aim to better counsel and monitor cancer survivors.
