Book excerpt: From the Preface: "The Unhealed Healer" is primarily a record of my experiences [during] the first four years of an eight-year Reichian therapy with the famed Dr. Francis Israel Regardie. It details the 'nuts and bolts' of procedure and content of many of the sessions, along with reflections and fantasy work which I did during those painful years of my mid-forties, almost twenty years ago. Why, in heaven's name, am I foolhardy enough to do this? What dark motive of exhibitionism, masochism or other "ism" lurks here to risk the judgment, opprobrium, scorn and contempt of my fellow healers or, just as bad, their pity? I must be out of my mind! Precisely. I undertook Reichian therapy to get 'out of my mind' and into my body..". -J. Marvin Spiegelman, Ph.D.

Book excerpt: 'Becoming: An Introduction to Jung's Concept of Individuation' explores the ideas of Carl Gustav Jung. His idea of a process called individuation has sustained Deldon Anne McNeely's dedication to a lifelong work of psychoanalysis, which unfortunately has been dismissed by the current trends in psychology and psychiatry. Psychotherapists know the value of Jung's approach through clinical results, that is, watching people enlarge their consciousness and change their attitudes and behavior, transforming their suffering into psychological well-being. However, psychology's fascination with behavioral techniques, made necessary by financial concerns and promoted by insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies, has changed the nature of psychotherapy and has attempted to dismiss the wisdom of Jung and other pioneers of the territory of the unconscious mind. For a combination of unfortunate circumstances, many of the younger generation, including college and medical students, are deprived of fully understanding their own minds. Those with a scientific bent are sometimes turned away from self-reflection by the suggestion that unconscious processes are metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. Superficial assessments of Jung have led to the incorrect conclusion that one must be a spiritual seeker, or religious, in order to follow Jung's ideas about personality. 'Becoming' is an offering to correct these misperceptions. Many university professors are not allowed to teach Jungian psychology. Secular humanism and positivism have shaped the academic worldview; therefore, investigation into the unknown or unfamiliar dimensions of human experience is not valued. But this attitude contrasts with the positive reputation Jung enjoys among therapists, artists of all types, and philosophers. Those without resistance to the unconscious because of their creativity, open-mindedness, or personal disposition are more likely to receive Jung's explorations without prejudice or ideological resistance. There is a lively conversation going on about Jung's ideas in journals and conferences among diverse groups of thinkers which does not reach mainstream psychology. 'Becoming' is for those whose minds are receptive to the unknown, and to help some of us to think-more with respect than dread-of the possibility that we act unconsciously.

Marvin Spiegelman's mnemonic for the various manifestations of the experience of the divine: Within, Among, Between, and Around. He details how Zen Buddhism, Hinduism, and the Kabbalah exemplify the divine within/ the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca clearly illustrates the divine among/ the Alchemical model exemplifies the divine between/ and the numinous experiences we find in nature, art, and synchronicity reveal the divine around us. Using his vast knowledge of symbolism and his desire for an ecumenical approach to religion, Spiegelman unfolds the fascinating images of the world's major spiritual traditions and how they relate to each other. There are chapters devoted to The Zen Ox-Herding Pictures, the Kundalini Path of Hinduism, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. He further explores the rosary and its symbolism of the Christian mysteries, women's mysteries as illustrated in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, and the path of the shaman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology's long and complex relationship to magic has been strongly influenced by western science and notions of rationality. This book takes a refreshing new look at modern magic as practised by contemporary Pagans in Britain. It focuses on what Pagans see as the essence of magic - a communication with an otherworldly reality. Examining issues of identity, gender and morality, the author argues that the otherworld forms a central defining characteristic of magical practice. Integrating an experiential ethnographic approach with an analysis of magic, this book asks penetrating questions about the nature of otherworldly knowledge and argues that our scientific frameworks need re-envisioning. It is unique in providing an insider's view of how magic is practised in contemporary western culture.
