Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps, better known as the "CCC", the most popular of his "New Deal" programs. This federal agency, which existed from 1933 to 1943, took millions of men and boys off of welfare rolls and sent them to thousands of camps around the country. In exchange for their upkeep and a small salary these "enrollees", as they were called, worked on public service projects near the camps. The results of their labor are evident all over the country even today. More importantly, the CCC gave these men and boys hope, and it instilled in them a work ethic and a sense of responsibility that remained with them throughout their lives. The CCC proved to be one of the most successful and inspiring peacetime endeavors ever undertaken by the Federal Government. This book describes the workings of the CCC in Washington, DC and in the camps. The histories of two CCC camps are given in some detail in order for the reader to gain some understanding of both the typical duties and the widely varying tasks that the CCC performed.

Book excerpt: The 1930¿s was the era of the Great Depression, Dust Bowl and governement work programs. Unemployment was staggering, adversity was widespread and the beardless youth of America faced a bleak future. The first and most successful New Deal work program was The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Millions of unemployed boys from the cities, farms and plains joined ¿Roosevelt¿s¿ Tree Army¿. With shovels and axes, they planted billions of trees, fought forest fires and advanced the conservation movement by a generation in many sections of the US. Between 1933 - 1940, they toiled along the cliffs of the Palisades and the marshes of the Meadowlands. They worked, they played, they grew up and in the process became a generation of young men with a newfound respect for conservation and patriotism. They were "The Boys of Bergen".

Affiliated with the Utah Division of State History, Utah Department of Heritage & Arts "There was a certain magic about sending young men into the woods. It was not so much man against nature as it was man in league with nature against the economic troubles that were then stalking the land."--from the book In 1932, unemployment in Utah was about 34 percent. Nearly every state west of the Mississippi River was struggling not only with unemployment but also with drought, erosion, and overgrazing. To solve these serious difficulties, President Franklin D. Roosevelt launched what would become arguably the most popular of his New Deal programs--the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). From 1933 to 1942, the CCC employed three million young men on land-improvement projects that are still used today. In this book, Kenneth Baldridge chronicles the work of the 10,000 men who served at Utah's 116 CCC camps. With facts and anecdotes drawn from camp newspapers, government files, interviews, letters written by enrollees, and other sources, he situates the CCC within the political climate and details not only the projects but also the day-to-day aspects of camp life. For thirty dollars a month--of which twenty-five was sent home to their folksthese young recruits planted trees; built roads, bridges, dams, and trails; fought fires; battled pests and noxious weeds; and erected cabins, campgrounds, amphitheaters, and reservoirs, and more. Today the CCC is credited with creating greater public awareness and appreciation of the outdoors. It has also served as a model for the Student Conservation Corps and other youth programs. This volume documents the public good created by the CCC, provides an extensive bibliography, and is illustrated with numerous historic and modern photos.

Roosevelt's presidential administration, was created to put unemployed young men to work performing conservation and related activities during the depths of the great Depression while simultaneously striving to restore the bodies, minds, and spirits of the men themselves. During the nine years that the CC was in existence -- from 1933 to 1942 -- more than three million men planted billions of trees, erected hundreds of fire towers, constructed lakes and dams, blazed thousands of miles of trails, planned and graded roads, and built numerous cabins, lodges, shelters, bridges, and other structures. This work of the CCC placed a rich, distinct, and durable imprint on more than 700 local, state, and national parks throughout the United States -- and in the process created a personality of landscape that generations have sine come to recognize and appreciate as an inherent part of their -- and the nation's -- outdoor experience. 'Our Mark on This Land, ' identifies, describes, and provides access information to more than 300 parks spread throughout the United States that provide the best remaining examples of CCC workmanship. As such, it is a treasure trove of destinations at which the living legacy of the CCC may still be experienced -- and ever more at which the living legacy of the CCC may still be experienced -- and ever more at which the living legacy of the CCC may still be experienced -- and ever more fully appreciated for the recreational and historical importance of this program provided all who value and appreciate America's local, state, and national parks" -- p.4 of cover
