Although the experience of blacks and immigrants in the United States are not directly comparable, their fates are connected in ways that are seldom recognized. With the arrival of large numbers of nonwhite immigrants in recent decades, blacks now represent less than 50 percent of the U.S. minority population. Takeyuki Tsuda is an associate professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University. After receiving his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1997 from the University of California at Berkeley, he was a collegiate assistant professor at the University of Chicago. He then served as associate director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the University of California at San Diego.
