Book excerpt: "A hard-to-get reservation is prized among serious restaurant-goers, but a table limited to members only seems to be the Philadelphia diner's Holy Grail. Palizzi Social Club is 100 years old this year in South Philly, but it was after chef Joey Baldino took over from his late uncle Ernie that business really started to boom. Palizzi has mastered the balance of old-school Italian kitsch and super-high-quality food and cocktails. Once a gathering place for the Abruzzi-American community, Palizzi Social Club is a current hot spot: members can take up to three guests, and if the light is on outside, they're open. In 2017, Palizzi was named Bon Appetit's #4 Best New Restaurant, Esquire's honorable mention best new restaurant, and Eater Philly's #1 restaurant of the year. Chef Joey's menu at Palizzi has a broad Southern Italian scope. Seventy adaptable, accessible recipes throughout include dishes like: Fennel and Orange Salad, Arancini with Ragu and Peas, Spaghetti with Crabs, Stromboli, Hazelnut Torrone. Come on in, and join the club."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place where I was born is called Arthur Avenue, located in the Fordham section of New York City's northernmost borough, The Bronx. Much has changed, but when I was growing up Arthur Avenue was the heart of Bronx's Little Italy, a vibrant Italian-American working class neighborhood lined with delis, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and merchants of every kind.I was raised on Arthur Avenue, starting out in a cold-water flat before spending my formative years working in my parent's deli and butcher shop. I went on to open a butcher shop of my own there in my late twenties, shortly before I was incapacitated by Guillain-Barre syndrome.Years later I returned as a purveyor of sundries in front of Ernie's Hardware and, through a series of seemingly fortuitous circumstances, went on to purchase a commercial building on Arthur Avenue. I used the ground level to build Emilia's Family Italian Restaurant, which I owned and operated for many years and which still stands today. My sister and nephew own and operate two vibrant businesses there today -- Mike's Famous Italian Deli in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, and Arthur Avenue Trattoria, the fine Italian family restaurant located next to Emilia's. I learned many lessons on Arthur Avenue that made me a better man. I'm Salvatore Cappiello, and this is my story.

Book excerpt: Patsy's Restaurant, so famous for its classic Neapolitan Italian food that Frank Sinatra used to fly his favorite dishes from its kitchen to his gigs, has had three chefs since it was founded in 1944: Patsy, his son Joe, and his grandson Sal Scognamillo. The three passed down family recipes, invented great new twists on beloved classics, and emphasized giving their diners-many of them celebrities-exactly what they wanted to eat. Patsy's Italian Family Cookbook features recipes we really want to eat-and can easily make at home, including: - Meatballs! - Pasta with Lentils - Penne alla Vodka with Shrimp - Pork Scaloppine alla Vodka - Chicken Pizzaola - Chicken Liver Cacciatore - Bass Puttanesca - Stuffed Veal Chop - Patsy's Famous Onion Relish - Stuffed Zeppole - Tiramisu - Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake A big, warm, beautiful Italian cookbook with full color throughout, Patsy's Italian Family Cookbook is a great book for those who know the restaurant, and the nationally distributed sauce and pasta line, but also for those who love classic Italian.
