Book Synopsis Disconnected by : Carrie James

Download or read book Disconnected written by Carrie James and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How young people think about the moral and ethical dilemmas they encounter when they share and use online content and participate in online communities. Fresh from a party, a teen posts a photo on Facebook of a friend drinking a beer. A college student repurposes an article from Wikipedia for a paper. A group of players in a multiplayer online game routinely cheat new players by selling them worthless virtual accessories for high prices. In Disconnected, Carrie James examines how young people and the adults in their lives think about these sorts of online dilemmas, describing ethical blind spots and disconnects. Drawing on extensive interviews with young people between the ages of 10 and 25, James describes the nature of their thinking about privacy, property, and participation online. She identifies three ways that young people approach online activities. A teen might practice self-focused thinking, concerned mostly about consequences for herself; moral thinking, concerned about the consequences for people he knows; or ethical thinking, concerned about unknown individuals and larger communities. James finds, among other things, that youth are often blind to moral or ethical concerns about privacy; that attitudes toward property range from “what's theirs is theirs” to “free for all”; that hostile speech can be met with a belief that online content is “just a joke”; and that adults who are consulted about such dilemmas often emphasize personal safety issues over online ethics and citizenship. Considering ways to address the digital ethics gap, James offers a vision of conscientious connectivity, which involves ethical thinking skills but, perhaps more important, is marked by sensitivity to the dilemmas posed by online life, a motivation to wrestle with them, and a sense of moral agency that supports socially positive online actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peggy Rowe is at it again—this time giving a hilarious inside look at growing up Rowe, both before and after Mike’s rise to fame. Since the day they said, “I do,” Peggy’s previous “doting” lifestyle met with her husband John’s minimalist ways and became the backdrop for years of adventure and a quirky sense of humor because of their differences. From thoughts of wearing headlamps in the house to save energy, to squeezing out the last drop of toothpaste with a workbench vise, Peggy learned to pick her battles and celebrate the hilarity in each situation. Once their boys were born, woodstove mishaps and garbage dumping tales were the seed for Mike’s obsession with doing dirty jobs and the comical presence he is known for today. As Mike rose to fame, Peggy was his biggest fan—who gave motherly advice and constructive criticism, of course. She baked cookies for Mike to take to Joan Rivers for a Christmas party hostess gift, and even wrote fan letters under faux names and mailed them from different cities to Mike’s producer. By the time Mike hits it big, Peggy and John retire to face more adventures, with a lightning strike in their condo, an elderly friend who ate marijuana leaves, and entering into celebrity status by making Viva paper towel and Lee jeans commercials, plus so much more. Peggy’s stories relive the details that intrigue and entertain old and new fans alike. So if you want a bigger, even funnier take on the Rowe family, About Your Father and Other Celebrities I Have Known delivers.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on a significant branch of anthropogeomorphology, which is not adequately studied: the impact of transportation systems on altering earth surface processes and landforms. This book fills the gap with in-depth study on the interaction between individual modes of transport network (e.g., trail, roads, railways, waterways, airports, and tunnel) and surface hydro-geomorphology with intensive literature review, fieldwork, geo-environmental modelling, mapping, case studies, and examples from different parts of the world. On the one hand, this book also addresses the vulnerability of transport networks from climate change and critical geo-hazards like floods, landslides, etc. with case studies from the high-risk zones of India. Overall, this book promotes peaceful harmony between the transport network and its surrounding landscapes as an essential lesson for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders.

Book excerpt: In a day when our churches look like country clubs with slick marketing campaigns, Jeremy McKim urges us away from a democratized kingdom of self and toward the kingdom of God. We have settled for safe and comfortable churchgoing while God beckons us toward risky and uncomfortable kingdom living. With Doxa, McKim shows that God's invitation is greater and more terrifying than any in all of history ∑ Why is ignoring God the riskiest thing you could possibly do today? ∑ Is God intent on crushing your ego? ∑ What is so unpatriotic and humiliating about worshiping God? ∑ Why might a worthwhile churchgoing experience have little or nothing to do with our satisfaction? ∑ Why is prayer a life-threatening activity? Allow yourself to be troubled and moved to action by these and other questions as you enter into a provocative and practical ten-week journey of transformation, discovery, and kingdom advancement. Discover that God has graciously chosen to display his glory in those who would simply "hear and do." Become the adopted son or daughter of the King whose unshakable kingdom is moving forward with or without you, and answer his call to enter and participate in that kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an author who was at the forefront of developments in multivariable spectral theory during the seventies and the eighties, this book describes the spectral mapping theorem in various settings. In this second edition, the Bluffer's Guide has been revised and expanded, whilst preserving the engaging style of the first. Starting with a summary of the basic algebraic systems – semigroups, rings and linear algebras – the book quickly turns to topological-algebraic systems, including Banach algebras, to set up the basic language of algebra and analysis. Key aspects of spectral theory are covered, in one and several variables. Finally the case of an arbitrary set of variables is discussed. Spectral Mapping Theorems is an accessible and easy-to-read guide, providing a convenient overview of the topic to both students and researchers. From the reviews of the first edition "I certainly plan to add it to my own mathematical library" — Anthony Wickstead in the Irish Mathematical Society Bulletin "An excellent read" — Milena Stanislavova in the Mathematical Reviews "[Offers] a fresh perspective even for experts [...] Recommended" — David Feldman in Choice
