Book excerpt: By and for engineers and scientists, this comprehensive book covers all aspects of metals chemistry, separation chemistry, and metals separation processes. State-of-the-art papers give news and recent developments and future research needs, of special value and interest to persons from industry, academia, government agencies, commercial and research institutes, information centers and libraries. This valuable work is the complete proceedings of the Metals Speciation, Separation and Recovery International Symposium sponsored by the Industrial Waste Elimination Research Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois, and the Water Research Institute of the Italian National Research Council, Rome, Italy, held in Rome, May 14-19, 1989. The book will be about 800 pages replete with drawings, tables, and charts helpful to understanding and use of the information presented. Written by some 50 specialists from leading institutions and companies from Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, choice information and data in this valuable new volume are organized into seven major parts: One: Chemistry of Toxic Metals; Two: Precipitation Phenomena; Three: Metal Speciations and Complexation in Natural Systems; Four: Sorption Onto Surfaces; Five: Ion Separation; Six: Soils Contamination and Decontamination; Seven: Waste Reduction and Recovery Case Studies. Index.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1980's, research has continued to clarify and improve our understanding of the problern of the ecological impact of acidic precipitation. From September 15-20, 1985, Canada convened the the Muskoka Symposium on Acidic Precipitation to review progress and help chart the direction of future studies. The Conference was held in central Ontario, Canada, a region of heavy sulphate deposition where aquatic effects are evident. Approximately 700 people attended, over 500 of whom were research scientists. Over 400 papers were presented. Nearly 200 of the papers are included in these proceedings, which tagether give the present state of the art of acid rain research. The Conference focused on atmospheric science and aquatic and terrestrial effects. I have made some general observations on progress in clarifying issues and linkages between these areas of research. Out standing issues which require a great deal more work are identified. These are my views, influenced by personal bias and limited by my expertise. Atmospheric Seiences Three aspects were covered: measurement techniques, the actual measure ments, and source-receptor relationships.

Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.
