Book excerpt: This volume contains recent research papers presented at the international workshop on “Probabilistic Methods in Fluids” held in Swansea. The central problems considered were turbulence and the Navier-Stokes equations but, as is now well known, these classical problems are deeply intertwined with modern studies of stochastic partial differential equations, jump processes and random dynamical systems. The volume provides a snapshot of current studies in a field where the applications range from the design of aircraft through the mathematics of finance to the study of fluids in porous media.

Book excerpt: Of the three lecture courses making up the CIME summer school on Fluid Dynamics at Cetraro in 2005 reflected in this volume, the first, due to Sergio Albeverio describes deterministic and stochastic models of hydrodynamics. In the second course, Franco Flandoli starts from 3D Navier-Stokes equations and ends with turbulence. Finally, Yakov Sinai, in the 3rd course, describes some rigorous mathematical results for multidimensional Navier-Stokes systems and some recent results on the one-dimensional Burgers equation with random forcing.

Book excerpt: Multiscale problems naturally pose severe challenges for computational science and engineering. The smaller scales must be well resolved over the range of the larger scales. Challenging multiscale problems are very common and are found in e.g. materials science, fluid mechanics, electrical and mechanical engineering. Homogenization, subgrid modelling, heterogeneous multiscale methods, multigrid, multipole, and adaptive algorithms are examples of methods to tackle these problems. This volume is an overview of current mathematical and computational methods for problems with multiple scales with applications in chemistry, physics and engineering.

This book was released on 2009-02-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most problems in science involve many scales in time and space. An example is turbulent ?ow where the important large scale quantities of lift and drag of a wing depend on the behavior of the small vortices in the boundarylayer. Another example is chemical reactions with concentrations of the species varying over seconds and hours while the time scale of the oscillations of the chemical bonds is of the order of femtoseconds. A third example from structural mechanics is the stress and strain in a solid beam which is well described by macroscopic equations but at the tip of a crack modeling details on a microscale are needed. A common dif?culty with the simulation of these problems and many others in physics, chemistry and biology is that an attempt to represent all scales will lead to an enormous computational problem with unacceptably long computation times and large memory requirements. On the other hand, if the discretization at a coarse level ignoresthe?nescale informationthenthesolutionwillnotbephysicallymeaningful. The in?uence of the ?ne scales must be incorporated into the model. This volume is the result of a Summer School on Multiscale Modeling and S- ulation in Science held at Boso ¤n, Lidingo ¤ outside Stockholm, Sweden, in June 2007. Sixty PhD students from applied mathematics, the sciences and engineering parti- pated in the summer school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting important trends in the field of stochastic analysis, this collection of thirteen articles provides an overview of recent developments and new results. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, ranging from an alternative set-up of rigorous probability to the sampling of conditioned diffusions. Applications in physics and biology are treated, with discussion of Feynman formulas, intermittency of Anderson models and genetic inference. A large number of the articles are topical surveys of probabilistic tools such as chaining techniques, and of research fields within stochastic analysis, including stochastic dynamics and multifractal analysis. Showcasing the diversity of research activities in the field, this book is essential reading for any student or researcher looking for a guide to modern trends in stochastic analysis and neighbouring fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together five contributions to mathematical fluid mechanics, a classical but still very active research field which overlaps with physics and engineering. The contributions cover not only the classical Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible Newtonian fluid, but also generalized Newtonian fluids, fluids interacting with particles and with solids, and stochastic models. The questions addressed in the lectures range from the basic problems of existence of weak and more regular solutions, the local regularity theory and analysis of potential singularities, qualitative and quantitative results about the behavior in special cases, asymptotic behavior, statistical properties and ergodicity.
