Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brilliant and original study explores the problem of psychopathology in the context of the larger problem of evil. Dr. Shuster places the problem squarely within the theological framework of spiritual warfare, focusing on power as the key element. The book is divided into four parts. The first of these examines various views of the nature of reality. The other three sections deal with power, pathology, and paradox, respectively. The section on power functions as a “hinge,” since it defines the paradigm that is implicit in the preceding chapters and explicitly governs the chapters that follow. The section on pathology establishes “evil” (of which psychopathology is a part) as a spiritual and moral category rather than as a scientific and empirical one. The final three chapters explore “a radical, paradoxical, Christian view of health whereby the power of Satan is conceived as being countered not by a like power but by the Word and Spirit of God operative through human weakness.” This challenging and at times unsettling book will repay the thoughtful reader with a clearer insight into what is perhaps the most perplexing problem of human existence—the problem of evil.

Book excerpt: This book is for people who are serious about leading people--men and women who have accepted big challenges, who have passed through the fire of tough decisions, who have acknowledged they at times have failed, and have recovered for the next challenge, but do not want to repeat the past. The thesis of the book is that the journey of leadership takes us deep into the dangers of both authority and risk, and our attempts to avoid one or the other of these dangers will precipitate crisis. As a leader who desires to flourish, it is critical to ask, is anyone following? And are we following Jesus as we invite others to follow us? In this book I invite you into my journey, and the journeys of other ministry leaders, through the deep waters of crisis and the challenge of learning to lead so that people are following. This process begins with self-discovery--disclosing default habits, fears, and hungers--followed by trusting the Holy Spirit to work God's transformation within us, and then to engaging the hard work of mobilizing his body, the people of God, so that every part is doing his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmasking the Male Soul is about freedom that confronts the innate and enslaving obsession for power and control in destructive ways. At the core of this liberating process, we must acknowledge that we cannot escape the sociocultural matrix in which every human being emerges. In denying their fallen nature, human beings set aside their dependency on God and become self-centered and self-reliant. It is from their self-centered hearts that human beings foster dynamics of coercion, domination, competition, and distorted self-realization at the expense of others. This cycle of shame and guilt is well-disguised behind a mask which enables them to enact these dynamics in subtle ways. At times even in the name of religion, men followed the illusion of their internal insecurities and became dependent on masks of power and control. It is time to break away from the chains of exclusion and devaluation of women in Christian leadership. Masculinities have only perpetrated a narrative of exceptionalism as the apex of humankind, and often they have contrasted to subservient expectations of women in leading others. Each chapter responds to the implicit male silence on the issue in a multidisciplinary way with historical, sociocultural, theological, and scriptural implications. In this book, I will endeavor to challenge the masks of masculinities and dismantle several mental models that foment a gender divide in Christ-like leadership in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith communities have always struggled with the questions of ethical method and cultural inclusivity. Accordingly, Ethical Issues that Matter enlarges the methodological discussion among ethicists and theologians by adopting the landscape of a mountain as a useful metaphor for racism. On a practical level, Ethical Issues that Matter is about the agonizing struggle to understand and to dismantle the mountain of racism in American society. According to the author, to do so would undoubtedly enhance the meaning and diversity of the Christian moral life.
