Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of the Earth's Crust A somewhat general survey is given here of the problem of the strength of the crust, beginning with the lines Of evidence which bear upon it and following out to some degree the conclusions drawn from it. It has in this way been cast into the form Of those articles published by the Journal of Geology from time to time, under the caption of Studies for Students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics of the Earth's Crust For many years past I have been convinced that various questions of Physical Geology might be answered negatively, if not positively, by applying to them simple mathematical reasoning, and quantitative treatment. My own views have, in some respects, been greatly altered by the application of this method; and I confess that the present work contains within itself evidence of the circumstance; for not only will it be found that the views now put forward diflfer in some respects from those, which I have previously published in contributions to scientific periodicals; but the effect of the progressive application of the quantitative method may be traced in the book itself; and the development of ideas, proposed in the earlier chapters, will sometimes be found to have taken an unexpected turn later on. This remark applies especially to certain hypotheses, which at first presented themselves in a favourable light, to account for compression and for the formation of ocean basins. It is extremely probable that, if these investigations are carried further, some of the theories now offered as fairly established, may turn out to be untenable. With a growing science like Geology this is unavoidable. On a review of what I have written, I feel how many difficulties have been left unsolved, and some which have occurred to me not even mentioned. Nevertheless I hope that this attempt will not be without a certain value in advancing the study of the Physics of the Earth's Crust. Book excerpt: This appendix to Physics of the Earth's Crust provides additional data and analysis on the physical properties and structure of the earth's crust. Drawing on the latest scientific research and his own extensive experience as a geologist, the Rev. Osmond Fisher provides new insights into the processes that shape our planet and influence everything from earthquakes to mineral resources. This book is an essential companion to the classic work on geology, and a valuable resource for anyone interested in the physical sciences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress Field of the Earth’s Crust is based on lecture notes prepared for a course offered to graduate students in the Earth sciences and engineering at University of Potsdam. In my opinion, it will undoubtedly also become a standard reference book on the desk of most scientists working with rocks, such as geophysicists, structural geologists, rock mechanics experts, as well as geotechnical and petroleum en- neers. That is because this book is concerned with what is probably the most pe- liar characteristic of rock – its initial stress condition. Rock is always under a natural state of stress, primarily a result of the gravitational and tectonic forces to which it is subjected. Crustal stresses can vary regionally and locally and can reach in places considerable magnitudes, leading to natural or man-made mechanical failure. P- existing stress distinguishes rock from most other materials and is at the core of the discipline of “Rock Mechanics”, which has been developed over the last century. Knowledge of rock stress is fundamental to understanding faulting mechanisms and earthquake triggering, to designing stable underground caverns and prod- tive oil fields, and to improving mining methods and geothermal energy extraction, among others. Several books have been written on the subject, but none has atte- ted to be as all-encompassing as the one by Zang and Stephansson.
