Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents MOSFET-based current mode logic (CML) topologies, which increase the speed, and lower the transistor count, supply voltage and power consumption. The improved topologies modify the conventional PDN, load, and the current source sections of the basic CML gates. Electronic system implementation involves embedding digital and analog circuits on a single die shifting towards mixed-mode circuit design. The high-resolution, low-power and low-voltage analog circuits are combined with high-frequency complex digital circuits, and the conventional static CMOS logic generates large current spikes during the switching (also referred to as digital switching noise), which degrade the resolution of the sensitive analog circuits via supply line and substrate coupling. This problem is exacerbated further with scaling down of CMOS technology due to higher integration levels and operating frequencies. In the literature, several methods are described to reduce the propagation of the digital switching noise. However, in high-resolution applications, these methods are not sufficient. The conventional CMOS static logic is no longer an effective solution, and therefore an alternative with reduced current spikes or that draws a constant supply current must be selected. The current mode logic (CML) topology, with its unique property of requiring constant supply current, is a promising alternative to the conventional CMOS static logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Jean de La Fontaine have invited an extraordinary variety of readings in the three centuries since their composition. By engaging selected fables and tales with contemporary notions of intertextuality, reader reception theory, and grammatology, Figures of the Text raises questions about what “reading La Fontaine” meant in the 17th century, and what it means today. The study integrates a theory of reading and a theory of textual production by drawing attention to those aspects of the text that figure writing and reading, for instance: scenes of reading; other modes of writing (emblems, hieroglyphics); inscriptions and epitaphs; proper names; and citation (proverbs, maxims, allusions); the relation of represented orality to textuality, of textuality to corporeality, and of textuality to the visual arts (ekphrasis); and the archaeology of textual figures, such as labyrinths, textiles, and veils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are so divided about La Princesse de Clèves' they're ready to devour each other.' So reported Mme de Lafayette, to whom his landmark of French fiction is traditionally attributed, when it first appeared in 1678. Over three centuries the initial divisions have widened into large areas of critical disagreement. Questions of interpretation in La Princesse de Clèves' outlines the main areas of controversy and confronts the radically divergent critical responses that have been made with the witness of the text itself. Without seeking to advance easy solutions, it suggests plausible readings and possible approaches in the light of the evidence provided by language and ideas more uncertain and ambiguous than might at first appear. Offering as it does a wide-ranging review of recent critical opinion and providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date bibliographical tool at present available, this important new work is an invaluable tool for all readers and students of this famous novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cerebral palsy is the most common movement disorder encountered in pediatric physical therapy practice. Physical Therapy for Children With Cerebral Palsy: An Evidence-Based Approach is a unique, comprehensive reference that focuses on physical therapy management of children with cerebral palsy through the analysis and synthesis of published research, and it offers evidence-based teaching and learning opportunities to a wide reading audience. Inside, Dr. Mary Rahlin examines the current approach to the diagnosis and classification of cerebral palsy and explores the research evidence related to prognosis; medical management; and physical therapy examination, evaluation, and intervention for children with this condition. Physical Therapy for Children With Cerebral Palsy analyzes cerebral palsy as a lifespan condition and utilizes the framework of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Sections include: Typical and atypical development of movement and postural control Cerebral palsy as a development disorder Medical management of alterations of body structures and functions by body systems Physical therapy management, including theoretical foundation, research evidence, and practice Normal and abnormal gait patterns and current evidence for orthotic management and assistive technology Transition to adult life Unique topics discussed: Variability, complexity, and adaptability in motor development The interdisciplinary team and effective interprofessional collaboration Assessment and management of therapy-related behavior Complementary and alternative interventions Segmental kinematic approach to orthotic management via ankle-foot-orthosis/footwear combination Other unique features include “Questions to Ponder” and “Suggested Questions for Future Research” at the end of each chapter. These are intended to generate healthy professional debate on a variety of topics, both in the classroom and in the clinic, and challenge the readers to plan new studies in search for evidence that will continue moving the pediatric physical therapy practice forward. Bonus! Also included with Physical Therapy for Children With Cerebral Palsy is online access to video clips that accompany the text and highlight typical and atypical development, use of assistive technology, life span issues, and transition to adulthood. Physical Therapy for Children With Cerebral Palsy: An Evidence-Based Approach is intended for physical therapy students, educators, residents, and experienced clinicians, including physical therapists, other members of the interdisciplinary team, and researchers working with children with cerebral palsy.

Book excerpt: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas.
