Book excerpt: These volumes contain the edited documents presented at the NATO-Sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Partial Pre8tre88ing, from Theory to Practice, held at the CEBTP Research Centre of Saint-Remy-Ies-Chevreuse, France, June 18-22, 1984. The workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July 4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences of expert oph:iipn· on the subject, which make more difficult the accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large. Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide the required background for developing some guidelines on the use of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC). (2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partially prestressed concrete construction uses prestressed, or a combination of prestressed and nonprestressed, reinforcement. Partially prestressed concrete falls between the limiting cases of conventionally reinforced concrete and fully prestressed concrete, which allows no flexural tension under service loads. When flexural tensile stresses and cracking are allowed under service loads, the prestressed members have historically been called partially prestressed. This report is presented as an pverview of the current state of the art for partial prestressing of concrete structures. Research findings and design applications are presented. Specific topics discussed include the history of partial prestressing, behavior of partially prestressed concrete members under static loads, time-dependent effects, fatigue, and the effects of cyclic loadings.

Book excerpt: This textbook imparts a firm understanding of the behavior of prestressed concrete and how it relates to design based on the 2014 ACI Building Code. It presents the fundamental behavior of prestressed concrete and then adapts this to the design of structures. The book focuses on prestressed concrete members including slabs, beams, and axially loaded members and provides computational examples to support current design practice along with practical information related to details and construction with prestressed concrete. It illustrates concepts and calculations with Mathcad and EXCEL worksheets. Written with both lucid instructional presentation as well as comprehensive, rigorous detail, the book is ideal for both students in graduate-level courses as well as practicing engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals fundamentally with the basic philosophy, principles and the application of prestressing in structural elements. It also covers the detailed engineering of the structural elements with prestressing forces in terms of analysis and design. Different systems of prestressing, losses in prestressing and evaluation of capacity of prestressed concrete sections in flexure, shear and torsion, the force flow due to prestressing at anchorage zones, the time dependent effects due to creep and shrinkage of materials are explained. The design of prestressed concrete elements is covered with a holistic concept. In case of indeterminate structures, the effect of prestressing while satisfying the compatibility conditions has been clearly explained. The necessary philosophy and the design procedures of partially prestressed elements have been specifically dealt with. Accepted National and International Code provisions for design of prestressed concrete elements under the effect of the various loads have been elaborately discussed with worked out examples.

Changes in the Second Edition include a new emphasis on partially prestressed concrete members, flexural strength calculations, deflection calculations, crack width calculations, along with new information on high strength materials, and more. Develops an understanding of design methods used in practice and familiarity with the important provisions of the governing 1983 Building Code of the American Concrete Institute. Balance of theory and practice provides a clear survey of design principles. Problems at the end of every chapter illustrate concepts.
