Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first-of-its-kind treatment, Heinz Tschachler offers an account of Edgar Allan Poe's relation to the world of banking and money in antebellum America. He contends that Poe gave the full force of his censure to the acrimonious debates about America's money, Andrew Jackson's bank war, the panic of 1837 and the ensuing depression, and the nation's inability to furnish a "sound and uniform currency." Poe's attitude is overt in his early satires, more subdued in "The Gold-Bug," and almost an undercurrent in writings that enter into and historicize the discovery of gold in California. In Poe's writings much is concealed, though his art also reveals while it conceals, in this instance, a deep felt desire for an authority that would guarantee a measure of permanence and continuity to the nation' s currency. That kind of currency was finally furnished by Abraham Lincoln (both were born in 1809; Poe died in 1849), at one time a dedicated reader of Poe's tales and sketches. Wielding his "power of regulation," Lincoln came to save the Union not just militarily but also economically. Under him, the United States government finally provided the kind of "sound and uniform currency" that Poe in his writings could only name and rehearse.

This book was released on 2009-08-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If money were about math, none of us would be carrying any debt. The numbers are simple. What’s complicated is what we do with money. We use money to soothe our feelings and buy respect, to show how much we care or how little. We don’t simply earn, save, and spend money: we flirt with it, crave it, and scorn it; we punish and reward ourselves with it. Without realizing it, we give money meaning it doesn’t really have—what former psychiatrist and current business coach David Krueger calls our “money story.” And in the process of playing out that money story, we often sacrifice the most important things in our life: our health, freedom, relationships, and happiness. What is your money story? Do you consistently spend more than you have? Do you follow the herd in your investments—even though you know the herd is usually wrong? Have you neglected to save for the future, even when you have the means? Do you feel controlled or shackled by debt? Is your money somehow never “enough”? Is money, or the lack of it, always on your mind? The Secret Language of Money is a guided tour to the subconscious meanings we give money, the conflicted ways our braindeals with money, the reasons we tend to make the same money mistakes over and over—and most importantly, how you can change all that. A brilliant blend of cutting-edge science and real-world application, The Secret Language of Money helps you rewrite your money story and find that elusive balance of wealth, health, and joy we all seek.

Book excerpt: Why did coinage, tyranny, and philosophy develop in the same time and place? Marc Shell explores how both money and language give "worth" by providing a medium of exchange, how the development of money led to a revolution in philosophical thought and language, and how words transform mere commodities into symbols at once aesthetic and practical. Offering carefully documented interpretations of texts from Heraclitus, Herodotus, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, and Ruskin, Shell demonstrates the kinship between literary and economic theory and production, introduces new methods of analyzing texts, and shows how literary and philosophical fictions can help us understand the world in which we live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Hill's The Language of Thought is your guide to understanding, generating, and directing more powerful thoughts so that you can live and work with more intention, joy, and success. The single most powerful tool available to human beings is not money, physical strength, influence, or a network; it is the mind. Our thoughts determine our outcomes in life, as well as our ability to enjoy the journey. In order to harness our thoughts to create material success, we do not require any personal advantage such as wealth, connections, or education. We simply need to utilize the mental resources already within our possession by cultivating a thorough understanding of the workings of the mind and the manner in which thoughts may be transformed into their physical counterparts. In order to create positive change in our lives, we must learn to speak the language of thought, which has its own unique formula. This book contains Napoleon Hill's best lessons on the components that make up the language of thought, as well as easy-to-follow, modernized instructions on how to leverage these elements to generate more powerful thoughts. In particular, you will discover how to: Magnetize your thought impulses with desire Refine your thoughts with definiteness of purpose Control and direct your emotions to productive ends Support your goals with a compelling network of motives Create positive thought habits through concentration and repetition Protect your mind from negative external influences The more you practice the principles outlined in this book, the more fluency you will gain in the language of thought. As your facility for this language develops, you will experience greater control over your thoughts and emotions, which will enable you to enjoy more success in the pursuit of your definite major purpose. There are no limitations to the mind conditioned for achievement. Are you ready to write your success story with more powerful language? "You will attract to you...the very things, or the very station in life, that you create in your thoughts." --Napoleon Hill

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I started creating the content for this book, my intention was to touch, move, impact, or agitate you, the reader, enough to change your perspective on finance and money related decisions. Some parts of this book may make you feel uneasy. If so, I encourage you to keep reading because you could be nearing a breakthrough. It's very possible to experience several different emotions as you digest the material in this book: curiosity, fear, anger, excitement, or even relief. This process needs to occur so that you can uncover your limiting beliefs. Once you realize what is standing between you and financial security then you can identify the resources and services that can add value to your financial life. My passion in business is to awaken the inner entrepreneur in all of us. The entrepreneurial mindset is present when individuals, families, and small business owners do the following: Educate themselves on financial topics that protect their personal economies Gain confidence in their minds that financial freedom is attainable for them Take action toward customized, one-sized-fits-one solutions through proactive implementation of cutting-edge strategies Establish trust with a team of resources that properly manage expectations Adjust their paths as the world around them changes Why do I find this entrepreneurial awakening so important? I believe that there are real economic forces working against individuals, families, and small business owners who have saver mentalities because they contradict our consumer-driven society. I am not saying these forces are evil or intend to harm the average American, but I do believe that certain elements of our society benefit from the effects of consumerism. Also, I don't want readers to think that this book is only for business owners or entrepreneurs. I believe that you can have financial success regardless of occupation, current age, income, upbringing, or level of education. You will uncover the key to your success as you understand your relationship with money and the habits you have formed over time. Your beliefs about finance are built over many years of experiences. They start when you are a young child through adolescence into adulthood, culminating in your golden years. The ability to uncover your habits and relationship with money is a skill most financial professionals do not even possess. What differentiates our firm, E3 Consultants Group, from every other financial service organization in the country is how we use the science of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). E3 is a comprehensive wealth management firm I started in 2003 that serves individuals, families, and small businesses interested in a different approach to finance and money related decisions. The science of NLP demystifies the link among the mindset, language, and behavior of any human being. NLP is a tool to unlock the clues to where you are right now in your relationship with money and helps solidify our firm's role in adding value to your financial future. Keep this in mind as you proceed, and I hope you can see why I want to proactively challenge the way Americans are educated about finance and money related decisions.

Book excerpt: For the past 150 years, Western intellectuals have trumpeted contempt for capitalism and capitalists. They have written novels, plays, and manifestos to demonstrate the evils of the economic system in which they live. Dislike and contempt for the bourgeoisie, the middle classes, industry, and commerce have been a prominent trait of leading Western writers and artists. Mind vs. Money is an analytical history of how and why so many intellectuals have opposed capitalism. It is also an argument for how this opposition can be tempered. Historically, intellectuals have expressed their rejection of capitalism through many different movements, including nationalism, anti-Semitism, socialism, fascism, communism, and the 1960s counterculture. Hostility to capitalism takes new forms today. The anti-globalization, Green, communitarian, and New Age movements are all examples. Intellectuals give such movements the legitimacy and leadership they would otherwise lack. What unites radical intellectuals of the nineteenth century, communists and fascists of the twentieth, and anti-globalization protestors of the twenty-first, along with many other intellectuals not associated with these movements, is their rejection of capitalism. Kahan argues that intellectuals are a permanently alienated elite in capitalist societies. In myriad forms, and on many fronts, the battle between Mind and Money continues today. Anti-Americanism is one of them. Americans like to see their country as a beacon of freedom and prosperity. But in the eyes of many European and American intellectuals, when America is identified with capitalism, it is transformed from moral beacon into the "Great Satan." This is just one of the issues Mind vs. Money explores. The conflict between Mind and Money is the great, unresolved conflict of modern society. To end it, we must first understand it.
