Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is commended to all good and progressive men and women who believe that by studying Mind, discovering its laws and applying them to human betterment, the career of man on earth could be greatly improved. And that the appalling errors, war, alcohol, oppression, injustice, crime and poverty can be abolished, together with a large proportion of disease, pain and unhappiness. This book is being written under an impression so strong that it rises to the dignity of a theory, that Mind, expressing as human, or, in the human phase, is able by studying the material universe, to discover some facts relating to its Creator. The main object in publishing this volume is to convince the reader that the universe stands upon a mental base, rooted and grounded in Mind; and that Mind created what we have named electrons. No hope is entertained by the author that the true nature of either Mind or matter will be discovered in this study, but hope is expressed that a few clews will be found"--p. [341].

Book excerpt: After a difficult youth, David Carter had become an excellent journalist for the Guardian. Whilst working full-time, he met a young woman named Susan, and they were preparing to get married. David was born with epilepsy, and as he was growing up, many people tormented him because of this condition. He had wonderful family support when he was a child and as he grew up through school and college. Eventually his life settled down, and he studied for a career in journalism. After many years of health difficulties, his dream came true, and at last everything in his life appeared calm and tranquil. One day near Easter, Davids brother, Matthew, asked him if he would like to spend a weekend with him in Cardiff, having already booked the rooms at a bed and breakfast. During their weekend, it was revealed that David had been adopted when he was just three and a half years old. David was horrified, and though he did not want to, he felt that it was his duty as an undercover journalist to find out more about his real mother. He found his mother living in a small flat in Milton Keynes, and though she did not want to speak with him, he forced his way in. There she revealed more about his real upbringing. The news horrified David even more and turned his settled life upside down, confusing him and aggravating his epilepsy. His life changed yet again when he was involved in a car crash. Some people believed hed suffered an epileptic attack at the steering wheel, but there was no evidence to prove this. He was taken to hospital seriously injured and in a coma. He remained there for several months, until eventually he slowly opened his eyes and began his recovery. Again he seemed a changed man, only wanting to live a life of peace and love with everybody. This change amazed and delighted Susan, and they made final preparations for their wedding and a new beginning.

Book excerpt: In this important book, a megachurch pastor acknowledges the mental health crisis happening in our churches today and gives readers practical tools to fight back against depression, anxiety, and insecurity—and help them find victory. Depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma are on the rise, even more so after the painful few years we’ve all been through. While the church has had an unfortunate track record of glossing over mental health issues, Paul Daugherty, pastor of the megachurch Victory, believes it’s time for the church to break its silence. You can’t just pray trauma away. Depression and anxiety can affect even the most devoted believer. In this book, Paul Daugherty walks readers through some of the biggest mental and emotional health issues he has seen people in his life and his congregation facing, including depression, anxiety, insecurity, mood swings, and the scars of trauma. Daugherty dives into scripture and lays a framework for understanding the spiritual truths behind each mental battle. He also offers practical tips and strategies to help readers find lasting victory. The result is an invaluable handbook that will help Christians and non-believers alike.

Book excerpt: An authoritative exploration of the psychology of elite sport, written by an Olympic silver medallist and respected sports journalist. Throughout her career as one of the world's top athletes, Annie Vernon struggled with an existential question about the purpose of sport in our comfortable, first-world society: why do we do it? What is it about our psyche that makes pushing the mind and body to their limits in order to win a foot race, a swimming race or a rowing race such a basic human desire? Having retired from competition, Annie decided to look for answers to these questions in the world of mind games. What is the psychology behind sport at an elite level? With Team GB recording its best-ever performances at the Rio Olympic Games, having come second in the medal table in consecutive games, the public is aware of elite sport and the techniques used by our sporting heroes more than ever. Whether it be performing under pressure, coping with nerves, teamwork, or building self-belief in the face of adversity, the methods that elite sports-people use are also relevant to everyday life. But sports psychology is still regarded as something of a mystery. How exactly do elite sports performers harness the power of their mind in pursuit of physical perfection? Through interviews with leading sports stars and the latest scientific research, Mind Games discusses elite sports psychology in a way that is interesting to the watching public, sports fans and sports-haters alike, with Annie drawing on her own first-hand experiences to walk them through this fascinating subject.
