This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigated in this thesis are some methods to control the optical modes of semiconductor lasers with different cavity geometries such as microdisks, microrings, and broad-area lasers with external cavities. The characteristics of lasing spectra from microdisk and microring semiconductor lasers are examined in detail. Microcavity devices are mounted on either glass substrate or the end facet of a multi-mode optical fiber, which is first realised in the mounting technology area of microcavity lasers. Under optical pumping in pulsed or continuous wave condition at room temperature, all sample devices achieved lasing. Lasing modes have been identified to be consistent with Whispering-Gallery modes. Quality factors are estimated to be of the order of 2500. We also observed for the first time that the mode spectral broadening with microring devices under high pulsed pump powers is attributed to the transient red shift of the lasting mode. These work show that optical pumping is an easy and flexible way to study lasing characteristics of semiconductor microcavity lasers. We can control the wavelength and intensity of optical modes in these devices through changing their diameters and varying their geometries. Two mounting configurations expand the optical pumping schemes and application areas with microcavity lasers. Mounting microcavities on the end facet of fiber will find possible applications in the integrated optical circuit, in which microcavity devices can be coupled with optical fiber as filters, add-drop filters, etc. Further work needs to be done on mounting microcavity devices at the end facet of a single-mode fiber due to the wide adoption of this fiber in telecommunication systems. How the optical feedback from an external cavity affects the spatial coherence of optical modes in gain profiled broad area semiconductor lasers consists of another part of the research work in this thesis. This device shows good spatial coherence with increasing output optical field under pulsed operation but has limited operation range with good spatial coherence under CW condition. The optical feedback reduces the threshold current of the gain profiled device by up to 8%. This is a trivial improvement that could lead to higher reflective coatings on the facets of laser diode. Feedback also restores the symmetry of beam profiles and increases the total intensity of the output beam without degrading its spatial coherence. It reduces the effect of any local perturbations in the thermal lens profile. The appearance of interference fringes between the near field profile segments when the feedback mode matches the output mode perfectly is another evidence of the food spatial coherence with this device. Simulations based on the modified Maxwell-Bloch equation verify the above experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dielectric microstructures act as ultrahigh Q factors optical cavities, which modify the spontaneous emission rates and alter the spatial distributions of the input and output radiation. The editors have selected leading scientists who have made seminal contributions in different aspects of optical processes in microcavities. Every attempt has been made to unify the underlying physics pertaining to microcavities of various shapes. This book begins with a chapter on the role of microcavity modes with additional chapters on how these microcavity modes affect the spontaneous and stimulated emission rates, enhance nonlinear optical processes, used in cavity-QED and chemical physics experiments, aid in single-molecule detection, influence the design of microdisk semiconductor lasers, and how deformed cavities can be treated with classical chaos theory.

Book excerpt: In spite of the increasing importance of microcavities, device physics or the observable phenomena in optical microcavities such as enhanced or inhibited spontaneous emission and its relation with the laser oscillation has not been systematically well-described-until now. Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities presents the basics of optical microcavities. The volume is divided into ten chapters, each written by respected authorities in their areas. The book surveys several methods describing free space spontaneous emission and discusses changes in the feature due to the presence of a cavity. The effect of dephasing of vacuum fields on spontaneous emission in a microcavity and the effects of atomic broadening on spontaneous emission in an optical microcavity are examined. The book details the splitting in transmission peaks of planar microcavities containing semiconductor quantum wells. A simple but useful way to consider the change in the spontaneous emission rate from the viewpoint of mode density alteration by wavelength-sized cavities is provided. Authors also discuss the spontaneous emission in dielectric planar microcavities. Spontaneous emission in microcavity surface emitting lasers is covered, as are the effects of electron confinement in semiconductor quantum wells, wires, and boxes also given. The volume extends the controlling spontaneous emission phenomenon to laser oscillation. Starting from the Fermi golden rule, the microcavity laser rate equations are derived, and the oscillation characteristics are analyzed. Recent progress in optical microcavity experiments is summarized, and the applicability in massively optical parallel processing systems and demands for the device performance are explored. This volume is extremely useful as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate students and works well as a unique reference for researchers beginning to study in the field.

Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating recent advances made concerning the chaos, stability and instability of semiconductor lasers, and discusses their applications and future prospects in detail. It emphasizes the dynamics in semiconductor lasers by optical and electronic feedback, optical injection, and injection current modulation. Applications of semiconductor laser chaos, control and noise, and semiconductor lasers are also demonstrated. Semiconductor lasers with new structures, such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and broad-area semiconductor lasers, are intriguing and promising devices. Current topics include fast physical number generation using chaotic semiconductor lasers for secure communication, development of chaos, quantum-dot semiconductor lasers and quantum-cascade semiconductor lasers, and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. This fourth edition has been significantly expanded to reflect the latest developments. The fundamental theory of laser chaos and the chaotic dynamics in semiconductor lasers are discussed, but also for example the method of self-mixing interferometry in quantum-cascade lasers, which is indispensable in practical applications. Further, this edition covers chaos synchronization between two lasers and the application to secure optical communications. Another new topic is the consistency and synchronization property of many coupled semiconductor lasers in connection with the analogy of the dynamics between synaptic neurons and chaotic semiconductor lasers, which are compatible nonlinear dynamic elements. In particular, zero-lag synchronization between distant neurons plays a crucial role for information processing in the brain. Lastly, the book presents an application of the consistency and synchronization property in chaotic semiconductor lasers, namely a type of neuro-inspired information processing referred to as reservoir computing.
