It recounts their early childhood, meeting, courtship, and marriage; their children, relatives, friends, acquaintances and occasional stranger, some trials and triumphs. This was a relationship that lasted sixty-five years, plus three months and three days. Richard was born January 13,1921 at home on1808 State Street in Quincy, Illinois. His parents had moved into town from the farm the previous year; he resided in that home until a short time after his marriage to Margaret. He had one sister, Anna, who was three years older. His parents, Henry Lewis Rosenkoetter, was born June 24,1886 and died, August 18, 1948 and Hattie (Weed) Rosenkoetter, born August 3, 1891 and died June 8, 1958. Hattie, a lovely and proper lady of English descent, was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois, living at 1808 State Street in Quincy. She gave birth to two children and was a homemaker, up until the time of her death at age 66. Richard's father was a wonderful and well-respected gentleman of German descent. He was a farmer until moving his wife and young daughter into the home at 1808 State Street, in Quincy. For the greater part of his remaining years he had a good job working for Prairie Farms Dairy until the time of his last illness, passing away at their home on 1808 State, at age 62.

With more than twenty-five volumes of translated Arabic novels, short stories, plays, and poetry to his name, and a career spanning some sixty years, he has brought the works of a host of writers from across the Arab world to an ever-widening English readership. Here he tells the story of a life in translation, and gives intimate glimpses of many of the Arab writers who are becoming increasingly known in the west. In the 1940s, while teaching at Cairo University, he came to know such iconic figures as Yahya Hakki, Tewfik al-Hakim, Yusuf Idris, and of course Naguib Mahfouz. Later when he lived in Beirut, that other great literary center of the Arab world, he spent time with such poets as Tawfic Sayigh, Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, and Boland al-Haydari. He was already a close friend of Jabra Ibrahim Jabra from his college days at Cambridge, and later of another well-known Palestinian writer, Ghassan Kanafani. Liberato discusses the relationship between memory and government pedagogy—or the meanings constructed and disseminated by Joaquín Balaguer in political ads and public speeches and through public policy and autobiographical work. Liberato argues that there is a revival of memory in the Dominican Republic today, including pro-Balaguer memorialization efforts, and that Balaguer’s political pedagogy had an effect on public memory. The influence of his political pedagogy on memory transpires in memorializations which reproduce notions of Balaguer's political and moral exceptionalism. This book shows that Balaguer’s authoritarian pedagogy has been consumed, anchored, and shared among different Dominican publics, in the island and overseas, through the prism he created. Liberato also reveals Balaguer as a contested political character who provokes particular emotions and well-defined experiences and notions of the past. She demonstrates how his legacy was legitimized and contested by comparing him to caudillos José Francisco Peña Gómez and Juan Bosch, as well as through instances when he is praised or questioned for being an American protégée. This book exhibits how diasporic Dominicans maintain and transplant their political knowledge after migration. In particular, notions of democracy, political trust, political accountability, human rights, and sovereignty associated with authoritarian pedagogy accumulate in their narratives of the past and in their accounts of politics and history. Key roles are played by shared historical, cultural, and linguistic symbols associated with the legacy of authoritarianism.
