Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium, Vienna, 8-12 May 1995. This was the first major IAEA meeting for more than a decade dealing specifically with the transfer of radionuclides in the environment. Its purpose was to review the information that has become available in recent years, notably as a result of the Chernobyl accident but also gained from studies of the discharges from civil and military nuclear facilities in the early nuclear age. This information has been used for improving the reliability of environmental model predictions, and the main results of the IAEA/CEC programme on Validation of Environmental Model Predictions (VAMP) were presented. In addition, progress in the IAEA programme on the International Arctic Seas Assessment Project (IASAP) was summarized.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 1228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five main objectives were assigned to the EC/CIS scientific collaborative programme: improvement of the knowledge of the relationship between doses and radiation-induced health effects; updating of the arrangements for off-site emergency management response (shot- and medium term)in the even of a future nuclear accident; assisting the relevant CIS Ministries alleviate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, in particular in the field of restoration of contaminated territories; elaboration of a scientific basis to definite the content of Community assistance programmes; updating of the local technical infrastructure, and implementation of a large programme of exchange of scientists between both Communities. The topics addressed during the Conference mainly reflect the content of the joint collaborative programme: environmental transfer and decontamination, risk assessment and management, health related issues including dosimetry. The main aims of the Conference are to present the major achievements of the joint EC/CIS collaborative research programme (1992-1995) of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, and to promote an objective evaluation of them by the international scientific community. The Conference is taking place close to the 10th anniversary of the accident and we hope it will contribute to more objective communication of the health and environmental consequences of the Chernobyl accident, and how these may be mitigated in future. The Conference is expected to be an important milestone in the series of meetings which will take place internationally around the 10th anniversary of the nuclear accident. It also provides a major opportunity for all participants to become acquainted with software developed within the framework of the collaborative programme, namely: Geographical Information Systems displaying contamination levels and dose-commitments; Decision Support Systems for the management of contaminated territories; Decision Support Systems for off-site emergency management (RODOS), etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.

Book excerpt: "In recent years, the need for accurate, reliable and interpretable measurements of environmental radiation and radioactivity has increased steadily. Such requirements as the assessment of exposure to man from natural and manmade sources, the evaluation of compliance with governmental regulations, knowledge of the movement and retention of manmade radionuclides due to man's use of such materials, and the investigation of geological processes and atmospheric phenomena have all contributed to this need. This report presents a unified and systematic consideration of environmental radiation measurements, especially with respect to the identification and characterization of smalll radiation fields and small concentrations of specific radionuclides, and the even smaller variations or changes in them. The role of measurements in the realistic assessment of dose to man through critical pathways is emphasized, serving as an introduction to the detailed discussions on sampling and sample analysis for radioactivity. Finally, the future needs and uses of environmental measurements, of new instrumentation, and of improved interpretations of the results are presented." --From Preface, page iii.
