Book excerpt: The comparison between international purchasing power and real GDP is very important to the judgment of national power and is the main content of national economic statistics. Although the ICP has experienced more than 50 years, its methodological research should continue. This book gives the research pattern, namely "ICP logic diagram", and puts forward more than 50 methodological issues to be considered. The "pure price ratio assumption" and "equal price ratio assumption" and their impact on the ICP data results are analyzed. It also reviews the important literatures on the recent ICP, especially pointing out that the ICP data results have the measurement risk of "anti-basic facts". This book traces back to "Ryten Report" and explores the principles of spatial economic comparison and the corresponding basic concepts of economics.

Book excerpt: Better designed and implemented fiscal regimes for oil, gas, and mining can make a substantial contribution to the revenue needs of many developing countries while ensuring an attractive return for investors, according to a new policy paper from the International Monetary Fund. Revenues from extractive industries (EIs) have major macroeconomic implications. The EIs account for over half of government revenues in many petroleum-rich countries, and for over 20 percent in mining countries. About one-third of IMF member countries find (or could find) resource revenues “macro-critical” – especially with large numbers of recent new discoveries and planned oil, gas, and mining developments. IMF policy advice and technical assistance in the field has massively expanded in recent years – driven by demand from member countries and supported by increased donor finance. The paper sets out the analytical framework underpinning, and key elements of, the country-specific advice given. Also available in Arabic: ????? ??????? ?????? ???????? ???????????: ??????? ???????? Book excerpt: This book attempts to reveal historical dynamism of transforming contemporary Maritime Asia and to identify key driving forces or agencies for the evolution and transformation of Maritime Asia in the context of global history studies. It seeks to accomplish these goals by connecting different experiences in Maritime Asia both historically from the late early-modern to the present and spatially covering both East and Southeast Asia. Focusing on interactions on and through oceans, seas, and islands, Maritime Asia can deal with any aspects of human society and the nature, including diplomacy, maritime trade, cultural exchange, identity and others. Its interest in supra-regional interactions and networks, migration and diaspora, combined with its microscopic concern with local and trans-border affairs, will surely contribute to the common task of contemporary social sciences and humanities, to relativize the conventional framework based on the nation-state. In this regard, research in Maritime Asia claims to be an integral part of global studies. Part I deals with long-distance trade and diplomatic relations during the late early modern era and its transition to the modern era, mainly in the nineteenth century. Part II focuses on the emergence of transregional and trans-oceanic Asian networks and the original institution-building efforts in the Asia-Pacific region in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artisanal mining is commonly associated with violent conflict, rampant corruption and desperate poverty. Yet millions of people across Sub Sahara Africa depend on it. Many of them are living in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), home to important mineral reserves, but also to a plethora of armed groups and massive human rights violations. African Artisanal Mining from the Inside Out provides a rich and in-depth analysis of the Congolese gold sector. Instead of portraying miners and traders as passive victims of economic forces, regional conflicts or disheartening national policies, it focuses on how they gain access to and benefit from gold. It shows a professional artisanal mining sector governed by a set of specific norms, offering ample opportunities for flexible employment and local livelihood support and being well-connected to the local economy and society. It argues for the viability of artisanal gold mining in the context of weak African states and in the transition towards a post-conflict and more industrialized economy. This book will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduates studying natural resources and development as well as those in development studies, African studies, sociology, political economy, political ecology, legal pluralism, and history.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy logic is vital to applications in the electrical, industrial, chemical and engineering realms, as well as in areas of management and environmental issues. Data mining is indispensible in dealing with big data, massive data, and scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. This book presents papers from FSDM 2022, the 8th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining. The conference, originally scheduled to take place in Xiamen, China, was held fully online from 4 to 7 November 2022, due to ongoing restrictions connected with the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, FSDM received 196 submissions, of which 47 papers were ultimately selected for presentation and publication after a thorough review process, taking into account novelty, and the breadth and depth of research themes falling under the scope of FSDM. This resulted in an acceptance rate of 23.97%. Topics covered include fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems, fuzzy applications, data mining and the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining. Offering an overview of current research and developments in fuzzy logic and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of data science.

Finally, lawyers treaty a variety of other issues, including the tax law of Liechtenstein, European Union-Israel trade in the automobile sector, insolvency risk and creditors’ rights in Peru, the modernizing of trust law in Hong Kong and bridging cultural differences in international Transactions.
