This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workbook is aimed at math contests preparation for grades 1 and 2 There are not many math contests for grades 1 and 2. The main reason, I think, is the limited math computation ability of lower grades students. Many North American students will not learn multiplication until grade 3, but many Asian countries and areas learn times table at grade 2, so there is one year of the difference of learning ahead in China. This workbook has brought its standard to meet the highest possible math curriculum in the world so four operations of computation appear in this workbook. The earlier the students could master the skills of four basic operations, the more the students could explore many possibilities of word problem computation problems. With this in mind, how does the very popular Math Kangaroo Contest test the grade 1 and grade 2 students? How is it different from other math contests? Math Kangaroo contest The Math Kangaroo grades 1 and 2 Contest almost does not include the direct math computation problems which are very different from the math contests in China where direct computation problems could include skilful computation problems. I analyzed the most recent years of Canadian Math Kangaroo Contest grade 1 and 2 problems and they start to emerge some characteristics and categories, so I include here to help students prepare for it. The lower grade math contest tends to skew to the more visual operation type of problems. The problems could be classified as follows. Many of the following problems are not typical problems appeared in the books where you can buy from a bookstore because the problems in the math contests are much more complicated and involve a lot of creativities. -Number relationships - mixed computation-Placing numbers in empty spaces-Logic problems-Geometry - Missing part of a figure or dividing a figure, Symmetry-Rotation-Counting figures and angles-Arrangement and combination-Pattern-Substitution method-Number puzzles including filling numbers into empty spaces In 2015, I started to pay attention to Chinese after-school learning centre's teaching materials and started to compare their teaching materials with our North American materials. At the same time, I researched the materials from Singapore, Taiwan, and puzzles from Japan and Britain. These analytical researches have led me to have an idea to combine all my published workbooks into one large workbook which includes math contest problems, IQ fitness, word problems, and chess and math integrated worksheets. This workbook is unique and one-of-a-kind. It also represents my idea of showcasing why math is fun to children and my ideas of using inquiry and conceptual teaching (探索及覌念教学法), then reinforced by procedural practices (步骤及題庫). I have used many of these worksheets on my own students in my classes and witnessed their feedback. Most children do not want to do just computation problems for 2 hours; very few students like to work on math contest problems for 2 hours continuously, so puzzles and chess problems are fun for them for a change.

Book excerpt: The math challenge curriculum textbook series is designed to help students learn the fundamental mathematical concepts and practice their in-depth problem solving skills with selected exercise problems. Ideally, these textbooks are used together with Areteem Institute's corresponding courses, either taken as live classes or as self-paced classes. According to the experience levels of the students in mathematics, the following courses are offered: Fun Math Problem Solving for Elementary School (grades 3-5) Algebra Readiness (grade 5; preparing for middle school) Math Challenge I-A Series (grades 6-8; intro to problem solving) Math Challenge I-B Series (grades 6-8; intro to math contests e.g. AMC 8, ZIML Div M) Math Challenge I-C Series (grades 6-8; topics bridging middle and high schools) Math Challenge II-A Series (grades 9+ or younger students preparing for AMC 10) Math Challenge II-B Series (grades 9+ or younger students preparing for AMC 12) Math Challenge III Series (preparing for AIME, ZIML Varsity, or equivalent contests) Math Challenge IV Series (Math Olympiad level problem solving) These courses are designed and developed by educational experts and industry professionals to bring real world applications into the STEM education. These programs are ideal for students who wish to win in Math Competitions (AMC, AIME, USAMO, IMO, ARML, MathCounts, Math League, Math Olympiad, ZIML, etc.), Science Fairs (County Science Fairs, State Science Fairs, national programs like Intel Science and Engineering Fair, etc.) and Science Olympiad, or purely want to enrich their academic lives by taking more challenges and developing outstanding analytical, logical thinking and creative problem solving skills. In Math Challenge I-B, students expand middle school math skills to a deeper level with topics in beginning algebra, fundamental geometry, counting strategies, and basic number theory. The students not only learn practical skills of challenging problem solving that are supplemental to their school curricula, but also develop skills in creative thinking, logical reasoning, oral and written presentation, and team work. This course helps 6th to 8th graders to participate in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8, MathCounts, Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle School (MOEMS), and Zoom International Math League (ZIML) Division M. The course is divided into four terms: Summer, covering Pre-Algebra and Word Problems Fall, covering Geometry Winter, covering Combinatorics Spring, covering Number Theory The book contains course materials for Math Challenge I-B: Pre-Algebra and Word Problems. We recommend that students take all four terms. Each of the individual terms is self-contained and does not depend on other terms, so they do not need to be taken in order, and students can take single terms if they want to focus on specific topics. Students can sign up for the course at https: //classes.areteem.org for the live online version or at https: //www.edurila.com for the self-paced version.

Book excerpt: Learning from Singapore tells the inside story of the country’s journey in transforming its education system from a struggling one to one that is hailed internationally as effective and successful. It is a story not of the glory of international test results, but of the hard work and tenacity of a few generations of policy makers, practitioners and teacher trainers. Despite its success, Singapore continues to reform its education system, and is willing to deal with difficult issues and challenges of change. Citing Singapore's transformation, author Pak Tee Ng highlights how context and culture affect education policy formulation and implementation. Showing how difficult education reform can be when a system needs to negotiate between competing philosophies, significant trade-offs, or paradoxical positions, this book explores the successes and struggles of the Singapore system and examines its future direction and areas of tension. The book also explores how national education systems can be strengthened by embracing the creative tensions generated by paradoxes such as the co-existence of timely change and timeless constants, centralisation and decentralisation, meritocracy and compassion, and teaching less and learning more. Learning from Singapore brings to the world the learning from Singapore—what Singapore has learned from half a century of educational change—and encourages every education system to bring hope to and secure a future for the next generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serving students with academic deficiencies necessitates communication and collaboration among professionals from several disciplines. Academic Assessment and Intervention brings together divergent approaches in order to demonstrate that scientific evidence, rather than biases or previous practice, must determine assessment practices that are selected and used for particular purposes. Similar to a handbook in its comprehensive topical coverage, this edited collection provides a contextual foundation for academic assessment and intervention; describes both norm-referenced and curriculum-based assessment/measurement in detail; considers the implications of both of these assessments on ethnically diverse populations; provides a clear link between assessment, evidence-based interventions and the RTI model; and considers other important topics related to this area such as teacher behavior. Intended primarily for graduate-level courses in education, school psychology, or child clinical psychology, it will also be of interest to practicing professionals in these fields.
