Lucifer is the first radiant beam that destroys the lethal darkness of night. Stars teach as well as shine. When named Venus, the bright planet-star becomes the symbol of dawn, the chaste Aurora. Lucifer-Venus, the sister planet of our Earth, was sacrificed to the ambition of our little globe to show the latter as the “chosen” planet of the Lord. Lucifer and Venus are the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” Aphrodite-Venus is dual. The dawn Aphrodite is daughter of Ouranos or Heaven: Her dusk counterpart, who presides over earthly unions, is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. The morning planet is also dual: Lucifer-Venus was dedicated to the Great Mother and symbolized by the Golden Calf, a heifer of either sex, that was male at rising and female at sunset, the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” “Lucifer,” our London periodical, has proved itself consistent to its originally declared policy. “Lucifer” began waving its torch before the windows of Lambeth Palace, not because of any personal feeling against His Grace of Canterbury, as an individual, but against the officialism he represents, which is at once selfish and un-Christian to the last degree. Theosophical charity demands that time and space should be given to the weaker members of the Society so that they discover their ignorance and cleanse themselves of the ferocious selfishness, narrow-mindedness, and conceit which have made their playing at “the higher life” an almost comical travesty. Unrelenting charity toward the shortcomings of one’s neighbour, and untiring charity with regard to the needs of one poorer than oneself, is the focus and scope of all theosophical teachings, the synthesis of all and every virtue. The foreordaining and predestining fiend-God and Satan, his subordinate agent, are human inventions: they are two of the most morally repulsive and horrible theological dogmas that the nightmares of light-hating monks have ever evolved out of their unclean fancies. The visible Sun is the Father of the physical man; the Moon is his Mother. The visible Sun is a ball of electromagnetic forces, glowing but not burning. It is not even the proximal source of visible light and heat in our solar system. It is the focus, reflector, and veil of the ever-Concealed Central Spiritual Sun — therefore mere illusion. Our Sun will become a comet in future manvantaras. The Central Spiritual Sun is the storehouse of Vital Force (noumenon of Electricity), those life currents which thrill through Space, as through every creature on Earth. The Vital Force, intelligently guided, radiates around man like a luminous sphere. Suspended like a fœtus within the Macrocosm (Universe or Spiritus Mundi, i.e., Spirit of the visible Universe) the Microcosm (Mankind) is vitalised and energised by the Archæus or Liquor Vitæ, the Fluid of Life (Nerve Aura), through which the Cosmic Forces, regulated and sustained by the never-resting Breaths (Agents of Cosmic Laws) act upon the astral body of man curled in the spleen. Pantheism was known and felt by the whole of antiquity. It manifests itself in the vast expanse of the starry heavens, in the breathing of the seas and oceans, and in the quiver of life of the smallest blade of grass. Esoteric Philosophy rejects the finite and imperfect God in our Universe, as the anthropomorphic deity of the monotheist is represented by his followers. The Vedic Aryans were as familiar with the mysteries of colour and sound as our physiologists are on the physical plane. Moreover, they had mastered the potencies of colour, sound, and number on planes inaccessible to the materialists. The spiritual senses, those that act on higher planes of consciousness, are rejected by physiology because the latter is ignorant of the Sacred Science. Yet mental as well as physical correlations of the senses (seven on the physical, and seven on the mental planes) are clearly explained and defined in the Vedas. The seven notes of the scale are the principles of sound. The qualities of every element, as of every sense, are also septenary and to dogmatize upon them, from their likewise septenary manifestation, is whimsical. It is only when Manas (Higher Ego) soars above the mists of ignorance, that the qualities of objects of sense on their dual plane of manifestations (visible and invisible) can be clearly seen and comprehended. The division of the physical senses into five comes to us from great antiquity. But while adopting the number, no modern philosopher has asked himself how these senses could exist, i.e., be perceived in a self-conscious way, unless there was a sixth sense (mental perception) to register and record them; and this, for the Occultist, is the Seventh Sense, that preserves the spiritual fruition and remembrance thereof, as in a Book of Life. Nature shall unveil her mysteries only to those sincere and diligent students of Occult Philosophy — who when pure, impartial, and unexpecting, act as centres of benevolent work — and shall lead them to the contemplation of celestial powers. We keep cycling back and forward. Having lost in spirituality pro rata what we had gained in physicality near the end of the Four Race (Atlantean), we are now cycling forward and upward until we reach the period that will bring the Sixth Race (Enlightened) on a parallel line with the spirituality of the Second (Sweat-born), the long extinct Race of humanity. Then, by cutting the Tree of Life, the slaves of birth–life–death shall be finally freed from the trammels and tyranny of matter. Colours and sounds are associated with the Hierarchy of Compassion, the Manifested Logos. Colour is Spirit (Atman), sound is Voice (Buddhi), and proportion of numbers is Word (Higher Manas). Each prismatic colour is the “Father of the Sound” which corresponds to it; Sound, being the Word or Logos, is his “Father’s Thought.” Thus the Creative Force produces colours, sounds, and numbers, in the shape of rates of vibration, which compound and dissociate atoms and molecules. Perfect knowledge of the correspondences between colours, sounds, and numbers is the first requisite for the student of Occult Philosophy. Who can assume the flower of power, the plant of the golden stem, and the azure blossom? The calamitous error leading to the sum total of mistaken views among the materialists is this: the so-called Nervous Ether is not an animal product, it is the living animal itself. It is the lowest principle of Primordial Essence, which is Life — that animal vitality diffused all around Nature; the flowers of self-consciousness, unfolding from within outwardly, are its products. But beware, under every flower there is a serpent coiled. Even when death arrives the Fluid of Life does not abandon the body. It only changes its state from activity to passivity, assuming dormancy because of the morbid state of tissues upon which it has no more hold. Once the rigor mortis has set it, the Liquor Vitæ reactivates and begins its work on the atoms chemically. The Vital Force radiates within and around a person like a luminous aura. It can be made to act at a distance to poison a fellow human being or, conversely, to heal the sick and restore health.

Book excerpt: Fohat (Cosmic Electricity), by infusing energy into primordial matter, electrifies into life and scatters into atoms. It is through Fohat that the ideas of the Universal Mind are impressed upon matter. Occultism asserts that Electricity is Matter, not mere motion. Force, or Energy, may be better names for it. Electricity is “immaterial” only in the sense that its molecules are not subject to perception and experiment; yet, Occultism says it is atomic, therefore material. Fohat is connected with Vishnu, from the root vish, “to pervade,” therefore, he is called the Pervader and the Manufacture because he shapes the atoms from crude material. From the first awakening of Kosmos to a new Day of Brahmā or Motion, which even during the periods of Rest (Night) pulsates and thrills through every slumbering atom, assuming an ever-growing tendency to circular movement. The gyratory movement of atoms and spheres exists from eternity. The Elementary Germs with which Fohat fills the Universe from the “Heaven of Mind,” are the atoms of Science and the monads of Leibniz. A perpetual exchange of atoms is taking place in Space, thus changing their combining equivalents on every planet. Atoms enter into new forms of existence, undreamt of, and incognisable to, physical Science. The essence of cometary matter, for instance, is totally different from any of the chemical or physical characteristics with which the greatest chemists and physicists of the earth are familiar with. Enshrined in its pristine state within the bosom of the Eternal Mother, every atom born beyond the threshold of her realm is doomed to incessant differentiation. If we follow the atoms and molecules of the lower plane in their transformation upwards, these will come to a point where they pass altogether beyond the range of our faculties. As the spiritual Monad is One, Universal, Boundless and Impartite, whose rays form what we, in our ignorance, call the “Individual Monads” of men, so the Mineral Monad — being at the opposite point of the circle — is also One, and from it proceed the countless physical atoms, which Science is beginning to regard as individualized. Instead of saying a Mineral Monad, the more correct phraseology in physical science which differentiates every atom would have been to call it the Monad manifesting in that form of Prakriti called the Mineral Kingdom. The atom, as represented in the ordinary scientific hypothesis, is not a particle of something, animated by a psychic something, destined after aions to blossom as a man. It is a concrete manifestation of the Universal Energy which itself has not yet become individualized, i.e., a sequential manifestation of the One Universal Monad. As the monads are uncompounded things, it is the spiritual essence which vivifies them in their degrees of differentiation, which properly constitutes the Monad — not the atomic aggregation, which is only the vehicle and the substance through which thrill the lower and the higher degrees of Intelligence. Every form on earth and in Space strives towards self-formation following the model placed for it in the “Heavenly Man.” The atom’s evolution and involution, its external and internal growth and development, have all one and the same object — Man or Humanity at large. Not only the chemical compounds are the same, but the same infinitesimal invisible lives compose the atoms of the bodies of the mountain and the daisy, of man and the ant, of the elephant and of the tree which shelters him from the sun. Each particle, whether organic or inorganic, is a life. Each atom may reach, by “self-induced and self-devised efforts,” that plane where it re-becomes the One Unconditioned All. Starting upon the long journey immaculate; descending more and more into sinful matter, and having connected himself with every atom in manifested space — the Pilgrim, having struggled through and suffered in every form of life and being, is only at the bottom of the valley of matter, and half through his cycle, when he has identified himself with Humanity at large. This, he has made in his own image. Myths are now proved to be fables, just in proportion as we misunderstand them; truths, in proportion as they were once understood. The Ether of Science, the Ilus of Berosus, the Protyle of Sir William Crookes, are one the same, primordial matter out of which the “Builders,” following the plan traced out for them in the Divine Thought, fashion the systems in Cosmos. Such grand metaphysical concepts can no longer be brushed aside as myths. Materialism and the malignancy of Scepticism are two evils that must remain in the world as long as man has not quitted his present gross form to don the one he had during the first and second Root-Races of this Round. The atom of the chemist, the atom of the physicist, that of the mathematician, and that of the metaphysician, have absolutely nothing in common but the name! Each lower mind constructs an atom to suit his own fancy, in order to explain some special phenomenon with which he is particularly concerned. The primordial Atom belongs wholly to the domain of metaphysics. It is an entified abstraction and has nought to do with physics, strictly speaking, as it can never be brought to the test of retort or balance. The whole Universe focuses on a single metaphysical point. Atoms, Ether, and the Evolution itself of modern Science are based on the conceptions of archaic nations. “Conceptions” for the profane, under the shape of allegories; plain truths taught during the Initiations of the Elect. Force is not in the Atom: it is in the space which separates atoms from each other. Matter exists in two conditions, latent or undifferentiated, and patent or differentiated. Atomic, however, is a substance not subject to the qualities of matter, from which it is quite different. The Matter of the Esoteric Doctrine is eternal because it is Unevolved Cause. Eternal Matter becomes atomic only periodically. In the language of the Initiates, Atoms are Souls and Intelligences. The atom imagined by modern Science, now called “energy,” is inseparable from Spirit. Stones, minerals, rocks, and even chemical atoms are simply organic units in profound lethargy. Their coma comes to an end when their inertia becomes activity. Replace the chemical terms molecule, atom, particle, etc., by the words Hosts, Monads, Devas, etc., and one might think the genesis of gods, the primeval evolution of manvantaric Intelligent Forces, was being described. Were Leibniz’ and Spinoza’s systems to be reconciled, the essence of Esoteric Philosophy would be made to appear. From the shock of the two, as opposed to the Cartesian system, emerge the Truths of the Archaic Doctrine and the Spirit which is at the heart of the Occult Doctrine and Thought. Though both admitted but one real Entity, while Spinoza made it impersonal and indivisible, Leibniz divided his personal Deity into a number of divine and semi-divine Beings. Spinoza was a subjective, Leibniz an objective Pantheist, yet both were great philosophers in their intuitive perceptions. To the follower of the true Eastern Archaic Wisdom, to him who worships in spirit nought outside the Absolute Unity, that ever-pulsating great Heart that beats throughout, as in every atom of nature, each such atom contains the germ from which he may raise the Tree of Knowledge, whose fruits will give life eternal and not physical life alone. Spirit is abstract light, uncreated, latent in every atom, in whose profound and sacred repose all motion must cease for ever. Latent Electricity becomes patent under certain conditions. The “elementary atoms” are compound bodies that contain primordial globules, the gross encasement of the still finer atom-spark — the spark of Life and source of Electricity — which is matter, still. When the Life-energy is active in the atom, that atom is organic; when dormant or latent, “inorganic.” The distinction between the two states is arbitrary and spurious. Life is as much present in the inorganic as in the organic matter. Matter, in atomizing, differentiates. Restore the differentiated matter to the status quo ante, and there is no difficulty in seeing how it can pass through the interstices of dense substance in its differentiated state, as we easily conceive of the travel of electricity and other forces through their conductors. There are no “blind” forces in nature. Every atom in the universe is permeated with Universal Intelligence, from the latent spark in the mineral up to the quasi-divine light in man’s brain. Matter and force are ever allied. Matter without force, and force without matter, are inconceivable. Every atom is endowed with consciousness, yet the potential of man’s ability to control the cells and atoms of his body, have not been honoured with the imprimatur of the popes of modern science. Every atom is a little universe of its own. Every cell and organ in the human body has a brain and memory of its own, and thus also, experience and discriminative powers. Physical Science calls “atoms” that which the Occultists regard as particles or molecules. The real atoms are the inner principles and the intelligent, spiritual guides of the cells, and the particles they inform. Atom is not the smallest constituent unit of matter, not even a mathematical point. It is an immutable Entity, a reality within an appearance — the molecule being in Occult Philosophy but a figment of maya-illusion. It may be described as a compact or crystallized point of Divine Energy and Ideation. The Hermetic Divine Fire is the fons et origo of life, that Uncreated Spirit which starts from, and is immediately reabsorbed into primordial matter. It is the ultimate essence of every atom whether pertaining to animate or inanimate, organic or inorganic substance. Before that Spirit is immersed into matter, it is self-existent and independent of matter. The real Atom does not exist on the material plane, it is beyond space and time. Atom, in its eternal state, is invisible even to the eye of an Archangel. Brahmā is called Atom, because we have to imagine it as a mathematical point which, however, can be extended to Absoluteness. He who would be an occultist must not separate either himself or anything else from the rest of creation or non-creation. For, the moment he distinguishes himself from even a vessel of dishonour, he will not be able to join himself to any vessel of honour. He must think of himself as an infinitesimal something, not even as an individual atom, but as a part of the world-atoms as a whole — or become an illusion, a nobody, and vanish like a breath leaving no trace behind.

Happy the optimist in whose heart the nightingale of hope can still sing, with all the iniquity and cold selfishness of the present age before his eyes! There are more hypocrites in a square yard of our “civilized soil” than antiquity has bred of them on all its idolatrous lands. It takes a brave man to speak the truth fearlessly, and even that at personal risk and cost. For the law forbids one speaking the truth, except under compulsion, in its courts and under threat of perjury. Instead of truth and sincerity, we have cold politeness and falsification on every plane; falsification of moral food, and the same falsification of eatable food. Be religious or irreligious as much as you like but do not be offensive, and dare not outrage and pain other people. In law, that which is sauce for the goose must be sauce for the gander. Thou shalt not revile the gods. Blasphemy with the modern criminal sense attached to it, existed with the Greeks, the Romans, and with the older Egyptians, ages before our era. Reverence is now replaced by emotionalism and holy mediocrities. The emanations of modern civilization kill all goodness and truth. When the “inferior races” have all been wiped out by the “civilized man,” what shall replace them in the cycle that is to mirror our own? True charity opens her purse strings with an invisible hand and, finishing its act, exists no more; it shuns fame and is never ostentatious. Pride is the first enemy to itself: unwilling to hear anyone praised in its presence, it falls foul of every rival and does not always come out victorious. The most beautiful serpents are the most venomous. As the external excellence of a thing does not reflect the moral beauty of its workman, so some of the most eminent poets and philosophers were historically immoral. We will not be moved by either hysterical emotion or a holy fear of the masses and propriety. Whether the new cycle will bring new horrors or herald days of pure sunlight and happiness for all, will depend on those who fight the battle of Truth against the powers of Darkness. Theosophy is brotherly love, mutual help, altruism in action, and unswerving devotion to Truth. Once men realize that in these alone can true happiness be found, and never in wealth, possessions, or any selfish gratification, then the dark clouds will roll away, and a new humanity will be born upon earth. Then, the Golden Age will be there.

Aether is the Father of the Universe and the all-vivifying Spirit of Cosmic Matter. Myths always speak to those who listen. In Kosmos there are three higher principles: Chthonia (Chaos), Æther (Zeus) and Chronos (Time). Æther is the Spirit of Cosmic Matter, represented by Zeus, Osiris, and other androgynous deities; Astral Light is their shadow on earth. Fire is the unity of Æther in its universality. But there are two Kosmic “Fires,” and a distinction is made between them in the Occult teachings. Æther and Hemera are the light of the superior and the light of the inferior or terrestrial regions. Æther–Chaos–Akasha is Deity. The Æther of the Greeks is the Akasha of the Hindus; the Ether of modern physics is one of Æther’s subdivisions on our plane. Æther and Chaos (Plato’s Mind and Matter) are the two primeval and eternal principles of the universe, utterly independent of anything else. Æther is the all-vivifying intellectual principle; Chaos, a shapeless liquid principle, without “form or sense,” from the union of which two sprung into existence the Universe the first androgynous deity — the chaotic matter becoming its body, and æther its soul. Chaos–Theos–Kosmos are aspects of the Unknown Space. Deity, in the shape of Æther–Chaos–Akasha, Soul of the Universe and noumenon of Astral Light, pervades all things. The Theurgists called it the Living Fire, and the Spirit of Light. The science of physics, and of metaphysics for that matter, know nothing of Æther. Yet Father-Æther is re-welcomed with open arms; and wedded to gravitation. Æther is the source and cause of all forces, whether cohesive, chemical, thermal, electric, or magnetic. Æther is septenary, whether Akasha is meant by the term, or its lower principle — Ether. Akasha is the Matrix of the Universe and the “Mysterium Magnum,” from which all that exists is born by separation or differentiation: it is the cause of existence; it fills the infinite Space; and is Space itself, in one sense. But as the finite within the Infinite, this light must have its shadowy side — the “Astral Light,” which is no light. Individual human beings can overpower that “fatal light” but only by the holiness of their lives, and by acts of kindness and brotherly love. In Buddhism there are no compulsory beliefs. We are to believe only when the writing, doctrine, or teaching is corroborated by our own reason and consciousness. But then, we have to act accordingly and abundantly. Nihil is synonym for the impersonal divine Principle, the Infinite All, which is neither “being” nor “thing.” It is the Parabrahman of the Vedantist, The One Life of the Buddhist, “That” of the Chhandogya Upanishad, the Ain-Soph of the Kabbalah, The Absolute of Hegel. Lord Buddha taught that the Primitive Substance is eternal and unchangeable. Its vehicle is the pure, luminous Æther, boundless, infinite Space — still a creation of maya. Mastery of Buddhist dogmas can be attained only by following the Platonic deductive method, i.e., proceeding from universals to particulars. In Buddhist philosophy annihilation implies only a dispersion of matter in whatever form or semblance of form it may be. Even our astral bodies, pure ether, are but illusions of matter, so long as they retain their terrestrial outline. Æther is incorruptible. The spirits of creatures, who are emanations of the most sublimated portions of Æther, are Breaths not forms. The body of Jesus was abandoned to the earth while Christos, the Inner Man, was clothed with a luminous body made up of Æther. Part 2. Ether is the Mother of differentiated matter vivified by the formless Fire of Aether. When we recall pictures from the ether, the returning current meeting the outgoing wave of crystallised sound takes it up by magnetic attraction, and returns to us simultaneously the images of the past and the vibrations of its sounds. Each particle of matter is the register of all that has happened and previsionally apprehends even unspoken thought which, once conceived, displaces the particles of the brain by setting them in motion, and scatters its ideas throughout the universe, thus impressing them indelibly upon the eternal and boundless expanse of ether. The Divine Intellect is veiled in man. His animal brain alone philosophizes. When “astral light” circulates in harmony with the divine spirit, the occult powers of plants, animals, and minerals magically sympathize with the “superior natures,” and the divine soul of man attunes with the “inferior” ones. But during the barren periods, the latter lose their magic sympathy, and the spiritual sight of the majority of mankind is so blinded as to lose every notion of the innate powers of its divine lineage and essence. Spirit is the personal god of each mortal and his only divine element. The dual soul, on the contrary, is semidivine, i.e., potentially divine. It is only when the human individuality, soiled with earthly impurities, overcomes separateness and identifies itself with the divine intelligence within, that the aroma of personal experience can become immortal. Although invisible, thought is a material force. Let the least cerebral motion reverberate in the Ether of Space and it will produce a disturbance reaching to infinity. Akasha is not the Holy Ghost, because it would then be Shekh?nah (M?laprakriti). Akasha is the noumenon of the Cosmic Septenary, whose soul is Ether. Ether is the lining of Akasha, and Akasha is the Anima Mundi and Mother of Kosmos. Akasha, whose lowest form is the Ether of Space, is entirely different from the medium of Science. Fire is the Spirit of Deity, the active, male, generative principle; and Ether, the Soul of Matter, is the light of the Fire, the passive female principle from which everything in this Universe emanated. Hence, Ether or “Water” is Mother, and Fire is Father. Sound is the characteristic of Akasha (Ether): it generates air, the property of which is touch, and which, by friction, generates colour and light. The ether of Science is the grossest manifestation of Akasha, though on our plane, it is the seventh principle of the astral light, and three degrees higher than “radiant matter.” When ether penetrates or informs something, it may be molecular because it takes on the form of the latter, and its atoms inform the particles of that “something.” We may perhaps call matter “crystallised ether.” There is no such things as light, heat, sound, or electricity. There is nothing but radiant energy due to one thing — Motion of Ether. Modern Science may divide its hypothetically conceived ether in as many ways as it likes; the real Ether of Space, i.e., Æther, will remain as it is throughout. Ether is the vibrating sound-board in Nature, in all of her seven differentiations. Where there was no Ether there would be no sound. The “Astral Light,” or Ether of Space, preserves the images of all beings and things on its sensitised waves. An occult explanation of “Spirit” photographs is that they are objective copies from subjective photographs impressed upon the ether, and constantly thrown out by our thoughts, words, and deeds. There exists an infinite ocean of ether, in which all material substance floats, and through which are transmitted all forces in the physical universe. So long as “Spirit” photography, instead of being regarded a science, is presented to the public as a new revelation from the God of Israel and Jacob, the jury will go on deliberating much longer. The mediumistic rapping is a correlation of vital force, emitted from the person of the rapper, with the potential energy of the ether. Cyprianus, the reformed sorcerer of Antioch, confessed that he knew of the Chaldæan division of ether into parts. Part 3. The Seven Cosmic Elements, with their numberless sub-Elements, are modifications of One Element. There is but One Element in Nature, and at its rootless root is Deity. The so-called Seven Elements, of which five have already manifested and asserted their existence, are the fabric veiling Deity. Father-Æther has pre-eminence over, and is the synthesis of, all elements. Chaos-Theos-Kosmos is Unknown Space, producing the four primary Elements, which are known on the terrestrial plane as Seven Cosmic Elements. The attempt to derive God from the Anglo-Saxon word “good” is an abandoned idea. God is Jod, a phallic hook. He may be the creator of physical man, “out of nothing,” but not the spark of divine intelligence that “fell” in order to make animal man divine. The Seven “immortal gods who give birth and life to all” are constantly forming matter under the never-ceasing impulse of the One Element. The Seven Cosmic Elements, with their numberless sub-Elements, are modifications and aspects of the One and only Element. Four are entirely physical, and the fifth (Ether) semi-material. Akasha, of which Ether is the grossest form, is the Fifth Cosmic Principle which corresponds to, and from which unfolds, the human Manas. The first four numbers in German are named after four elements. But the Ancients represented the world by five elements. Had they been ignorant of the heterogeneity of the elements they would have had no personifications of Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and Æther. Of the Seven Elements on our Earth, four are now fully manifested, while the fifth — Ether — is only partially so, as we are hardly in the second half of the Fourth Round and, consequently, the Fifth Element will manifest fully only in the Fifth Round. It will only be in the next, or Fifth Round, that Ether, the gross body of Akasha, will become a familiar fact of Nature to all men, as air is familiar to us now. Cosmic Elements are the noumena of the terrestrial elements. “Water” is Matter in its precosmic state. Ether contains all other states of matter and their properties. The “waters” of creation are not the liquid we know, but Æther — the Fiery Waters of Invisible Space. Fohat is the “Son of Æther,” in its highest aspect. From Mahat-Intelligence proceeds ether; from ether, air; from air, heat; from heat, water; and from water, earth with everything on her. Æther is universal Fire — imponderable power and potency. Ether is one of Seven Cosmic Principles. Akasha is the synthesis of Æther; and Ether, an aspect of Akasha. The Astral Light is no “light,” it is the dark side of Ether, teeming with conscious, semi-conscious, and unconscious entities.

Hylo-Idealism asserts that the origin of man has to be sought in the vesiculo-neurine of his hemispherical ganglia, and that even ingratitude is a phenomenon of atavism. Psychical Research is a misnomer for Pseusmatical Research. Modern Idealism is the great ally of Materialism. Their conclusions are so far stretched, that they both converge in their atheism and pessimism. The “scientific” union of Materialism and Idealism takes place in grey matter, affirms Dr. Lewins. New philosophies are the spawn of overworked intellect. They keep sprouting like mushrooms from their mycelium after a rainy morning — interminable, outlandish, multisyllabled, and multicipital. While we tearfully beg Dr. Lewins, in the interests of humanity, to have pity on his poor readers, we shall fight the usurper “Solipsism” in favour of the legitimate King of the Universe — Egoism. Hylo-Idealism is at odds with Hylo-Ideaism. Since Dr. Lewins regards consciousness as a function of the nerve-tissue, he is an uncompromising materialist. If apart from brain there is no Ego, no external world, what then is the brain itself — this solitary object in a void universe? On the one hand, matter is asserted; on the other, matter is denied. The Vedantins symbolise Cosmic Duality by Logos and Mulaprakriti, i.e., Universal Spirit and Noumenon of Matter. The latter is the metaphysical basis of the intelligent operations in Nature. The orthodox concept of God is not, as Dr. Lewins contends, a myth or phantasm of the brain; it is an individualised ray of the all-pervading Logos, the inner light of which is blurred by the fog of lower minds. Modern Idealism is based upon gigantic paradoxes and even contradictions in terms. Venus, the morning star, was created before the sun and the moon — metaphorically, not astronomically. Venus-Aphrodite is one with the Astarte-Astoreth, the moon-goddess of generation presiding at human birth, just as Jehovah is the god of generation, foremost of all. Astoreth, as a planet, is one with Lucifer, the Morning Star. Like modern Spiritualism, Hylo-Idealism is transcendental Materialism. No man can be at once a Materialist and an Idealist, and remain consistent. The new school teaches that brain is the Creator of the Universe and originator of consciousness; that in it alone all our ideas are born, and that, apart from it, nothing has real existence, everything being illusion. By denying the Vedantic idea of non-separateness, the Hylo-Idealists vitiate every one of their arguments. The real “I” which thinks, feels, and acts is a ray of Absolute Consciousness, which is no “consciousness.”
