Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of Egyptian Insects in the Collection of the Ministry of Agriculture One of the most important reasons for working up the fauna, however, is in connection with the importation of insect pests. For instance, Durrant, writing on T ineina bred from Cotton Bolls in the Bulletin of Entomological Research, August 1912, upholds the idea that the pink boll worm was imported into India from Egypt, the exact reverse of the actual fact, and the information which was then available led Dudgeon, in his article on The Pink Boll Worm in the Agricultural Journal of Egypt, 1912, to express the Opinion that it had occurred in Egypt for many years, whereas it is now fairly certain that it has been imported between 1903 and 1910. Neither of these mistakes would have been made if the Lepidoptera of the country had previously been properly worked up. If the pink boll worm had been discovered in the original consignments of Indian cotton which brought it to the country, nothing would have been done to prevent its entry if such opinions as the above were possible, whereas if the distribution and history of the pink boll worm had been known as it is now, steps might very easily have been taken to prevent the calamity that the importation of this pest has proved to be. On the other hand, if the fauna of the country is not properly known, much trouble and expense may be spent on trying to keep out of the country an insect which is a dangerous pest elsewhere, but which as a matter of fact may be already present, occurring in small numbers only, being kept under control by an unfavourable climate or other natural agents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of the Specimens of Lepidopterous Insects: In the Collection of the British Museum The object of the present Catalogue is to give a complete list of all the genera and species of Sphingids known to exist in the different collections. The letters a, b, c, &c., after the species, denote the specimens now contained in the British Museum, followed by the habitat and the mode in which each of them was obtained, and the absence of these letters indicates the species which are desiderata, and therefore desirable to be procured for the collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Coccidae of Egypt The literature on the Coccidæ of Egypt is confined to a series of isolated records, and in view of the economic importance of this family I propose in the present paper to put on record the species which we have in the collections of the Ministry of Agriculture. In all fifty-six species arc recorded, and it Is hoped that in subsequent papers this list will be greatly augmented; it is probable that over a hundred described species exist in the country' and doubtless some new to science will be collected, especially when time permits of a careful examination of the desert flora. Existing records show that a number of species have been described originally from Egyptian material, for the mast part by Newstead in the Bulletin of Entomological Research. With one or two exceptions all of the recorded species -and many hitherto unrecorded species - are found in the collections of the Ministry and arc here recorded; the remaining will be found sooner or later and included in a subsequent paper. It is fully realized that the present paper is very' incomplete, but it is thought that our present records, incomplete though they may' be, will be of some value until such time as a more complete collection can be worked up. Throughout I have followed the nomenclature as given in Fernald's "Catalogue of the Coccidæ." I should have preferred to give a complete description of the characters of each species recorded, but such descriptions arc useless without illustrations, and it would be difficult to get the plates required executed in this country. I have therefore confined myself to a brief description of the external characters, pointing out any peculiarities, and I have only referred to the microscopic characters where my preparations show any divergence from type. Under the bibliography of each species I have given one or two references where complete descriptions with figures may be found. Many of these references are to Green's " Coccidæ of Ceylon," Newstead's "Monograph of the British Coccidæ" and to Nowstead's excellent descriptions in the "Bulletin of Entomological Research" from which I have occasionally' taken the liberty of freely quoting.
