Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limestone Legacies is a collection of articles and photos on the local history of the town of Granbury and the surrounding Hood County in north central Texas from the 1840s to the present day. The local story has been greatly influenced by the Brazos River, or as the Spanish explorers named it- El Rio de los Brazos de Dios- the River of the Arms of God. The various articles profile the people, places, and events that have highlighted the last 160 years in the area, with sections focusing on The Founders, Glimpses of the Past, Legends and Lore (including John Wilkes Booth and Jesse James!), Historic Preservation, and Following the Trails of History, with an end section outlining local resources for genealogy and family research. Most of the articles feature photos of the actual people, places and/or events, and focus on the years from 1850-1925 and from 1970 to current historical preservation work. This book should become a go-to source for accessible information and photos of some of the prominent early citizens and also provides interesting insights into the differences between the world of 150 years ago and our current early twenty-first lives.

Book excerpt: In words and stunning colour pictures, this book tells the history and the current reality of over 50 fieldstone buildings in Saskatchewan. The book includes an introduction by Bernie Flaman, the provincial Heritage Architect, a historical overview, and profiles of several of Saskatchewan's most prominent stonemasons. The balance of the book is made up of stories of the buildings farmhouses, homes in urban communities, places of worship, public buildings and ruins. Margaret Hryniuk uses her years of experience in journalism to present factual yet fascinating accounts of the buildings and what is known of the people who put them there. Larry Easton's spectacular photographs bring these beautiful stone buildings to life, and Frank Korvemaker examines the dimensions and differences of the fieldstone that inhabits the Saskatchewan landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neanderthals populated western Europe from nearly 250,000 to 30,000 years ago when they disappeared from the archaeological record. In turn, populations of anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens, came to dominate the area. Seeking to understand the nature of this replacement, which has become a hotly debated issue, Paul Mellars brings together an unprecedented amount of information on the behavior of Neanderthals. His comprehensive overview ranges from the evidence of tool manufacture and related patterns of lithic technology, through the issues of subsistence and settlement patterns, to the more controversial evidence for social organization, cognition, and intelligence. Mellars argues that previous attempts to characterize Neanderthal behavior as either "modern" or "ape-like" are both overstatements. We can better comprehend the replacement of Neanderthals, he maintains, by concentrating on the social and demographic structure of Neanderthal populations and on their specific adaptations to the harsh ecological conditions of the last glaciation. Mellars's approach to these issues is grounded firmly in his archaeological evidence. He illustrates the implications of these findings by drawing from the methods of comparative socioecology, primate studies, and Pleistocene paleoecology. The book provides a detailed review of the climatic and environmental background to Neanderthal occupation in Europe, and of the currently topical issues of the behavioral and biological transition from Neanderthal to fully "modern" populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses present-day landscapes, ecosystem functioning and biodiversity as legacies of the past. It implements an interdisciplinary approach to understand how natural or human-impacted ecological systems have changed over time. Historical Ecology combines theory, methods, regional case studies and syntheses to provide a complete up-to-date overview of historical ecology. Beginning with the crucial role of time and inference from observed patterns, the book critically reviews the main methodological approaches, including monitoring of permanent plots, analysis of old maps, repeat photography, remote sensing, soil analysis, charcoal analysis, botanical indicators, and combinations of these methods applied to forest ecosystems. A series of case studies from various biomes shows how historical ecology can help in understanding today’s socio-ecosystems, such as mainland and island forests, orchards, tundra and coastal dunes. The book concludes by showing how historical ecology can answer timely fundamental research questions and provide science-based evidence for landscape and ecosystem management.
