Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, mathematician Ed Beltrami takes a close enough look at randomness to make it mysteriously disappear. The results of coin tosses, it turns out, are determined from the start, and only our incomplete knowledge makes them look random. "Random" sequences of numbers are more elusive, but Godels undecidability theorem informs us that we will never know. Those familiar with quantum indeterminacy assert that order is an illusion, and that the world is fundamentally random. Yet randomness is also an illusion. Perhaps order and randomness, like waves and particles, are only two sides of the same (tossed) coin.

Book excerpt: Random Life is a collection of over 200 recent cartoons by much-loved cartoonist Judy Horacek. Drawn for her regular spot in the Age (and other publications wise enough to employ her), Judy¿s ninth cartoon collection covers subjects as diverse as climate change, feminism, social media, fairy tales, Mondays and zebras. These are cartoons that make us look anew at the contemporary world. They show us who we are, or who we might be. They make us laugh, or sometimes even cry. They are about life, and it is random.

Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE 2014 WINTON ROYAL SOCIETY PRIZE FOR SCIENCE BOOKS As troubling as we pattern-seeking humans may find it, modern science has repeatedly shown us that randomness is the underlying heartbeat of nature. In Dice World, acclaimed science writer Brian Clegg takes readers on an incredible trip around our random universe, uncovering the truths and lies behind probability and statistics, explaining how chaotic intervention is behind every great success in business, and demonstrating the possibilities quantum mechanics has given us for creating unbreakable ciphers and undergoing teleportation. He explores how the ‘clockwork universe’ imagined by Newton, in which everything could be predicted given enough data, was disproved bit by bit, to be supplanted by chaos theory and quantum physics. Clegg reveals a world in which not only is accurate forecasting often impossible but probability is the only way for us to understand the fundamental nature of things. Forget the clockwork universe. Welcome to Dice World, a unique portrait of a startlingly complex cosmos, from the bizarre microscopic world of the quantum to the unfathomable mechanics of planetary movements, where very little is as it seems...

Book excerpt: In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets. Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others--vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget.... After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you. Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken--and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

"99 Random but Relevant Things..." is a manuscript that encompasses all of which fascinates the human mind. Offering more than just 99 separate thoughts but rather one collective thought concerning all aspects of life.Contributions to this book explore contemporary critical thought from random schools of philosophies to relevant scientific facts, scratching the surface of the ideas, and dilemmas in day to day life. The larger scope focuses on the hot topic of self-improvement through a series of motivational quotes and extensive psychological and empirical research. This book presents a combination of subjective and objective views of the different realms of life whose reckoning cuts across the social sciences and the deep question in what it is to be human. By the end of this manuscript, you will be a bit more resilient, sincere, skeptical, poetic, humble, curious, and "99 Random but Relevant Things..." wiser than before.--Fact--Poetry--Quotes--Theories--Psychology--Self Help Tips--Vital Knowledge --All Random, but Relevant

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of a number of aluminum-alloy test specimens was loaded by random forces at a constant root-mean-square stress level until rupture occurred. The forces were statistically stationary and Gaussian with a zero mean value. The fatigue life (to rupture) was determined for various values of the following statistical parameters: (a) root-mean-square nominal applied stress, (b) power spectral shape, (c) mean number of zero crossings per unit time, and (d) mean number of peak loads per unit time. The power spectra were varied over a passband of frequency for three spectral shapes either by holding the power constant with frequency or by varying it either directly or inversely proportional to the square of the frequency. The results indicate that the fatigue life was determined principally by the root-mean-square nominal applied stress level. The effects of spectral shape, average number of zero crossings, and average number of peak loads were insignificant in the ranges investigated. The fatigue life, based on the number of effective cycles, of the specimens under random loading was lower by at least an order of magnitude at all stress levels than that of the specimens loaded sinusoidally. A linear cumulative damage theory overestimated the fatigue life, especially at low stress levels. The fracture characteristics of the specimens which failed under random loading were similar to those which failed under sinusoidal loads.
