Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painters of Yesterday and Today I do not wish to convey the impression of being insensible to the merits of the large canvases - they are too obvious to permit of their being overlooked by anyone who is at all sensitive to what is most truly beautiful in contemporary American landscape art. In suggesting minor faults which one finds in some, I do not mean to imply that they are common evenin the large canvases or that the smaller pictures which I have chosen to write about here are faultless. However, any inaccuracy in interpretation in a land scape of considerable dimensions is, simply because it involves so much in the way of mere representation, seemingly exaggerated, while a similar defect in a small painting is less likely to be discovered except as one studies it closely. I am not sure either that it is not true that in working a painter senses an inaccurate rendering in a small picture more often than in a large canvas, in the elaboration of which he is absorbed by subtleties of mood and emotion rather than by problems of actiial representation. Thus Murphy's miniature landscapes have, I believe, a more definite aspect of reality while his larger pic tures appeal to us more particularly because of their successful embodiment of spiritual values. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the United States become not only the leading contemporary art scene in the world, but also the leading market for art? The answer has to do not only with the talents of American artists or even the size of the American economy, but also--and especially--the skills and entrepreneurship of American art dealers. Their story has not been told...until now. Landscape with Figures is the first history of art dealing in the United States, following the profession from eighteenth-century portrait and picture salesmen in the colonies to the high-profile, jet-set gallery owners of today. Providing anecdotal and carefully researched biographies of the prominent dealers from more than two centuries of trade, author Malcolm Goldstein shows how magnanimous personalities and social networking helped to shape the way Americans have bought and valued art. These dealers range from Michael Paff, whose enthusiasm often overshadowed his expertise but nonetheless helped him sell faux Old Master paintings to major collectors in the early nineteenth century; to the imperious Joseph Duveen, dealer to magnates like Henry Clay Frick; to visionary Leo Castelli, who helped to usher in a revolution in modern art during the 1960s by showing such avant-garde artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. Goldstein also shows that the American art trade, while male-dominated, has been galvanized by female dealers, including the inimitable Edith Gregor Halpert, Peggy Guggenheim, and Mary Boone. Their fascinating stories unfold in the context of world art history, the rise of major art institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, and the growing zeal of art collectors who would eventually pay millions for individual works of art. Unprecedented and critical to understanding today's art world, Landscape with Figures is a must for artists, art history students, and art lovers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Painters of America While the present list of Famous Painters of America is limited to fourteen names, it is by no means definitive. Others who have strong claims for consideration may be found in a general history of art, which this book does not claim to be. Nevertheless, the ones here chosen are broadly representative of the best in line and color that our country has yet produced: and while their work is not considered to the exclu sion of other noted names, it will always be shown with the foremost examples of its period.
