Book excerpt: Kent is traditionally known as the Garden of England, but the term could just as easily apply to Sussex and Surrey, for in addition to hopgardens, orchards and vineyards the region boasts some of the country's greatest gardens, such as Sissinghurst, Nymans, Sheffield Park and Wisley. Also found here, within easy reach of London and the coast, are romantic ruins like Bodiam and Scotney, great cathedral cities like Canterbury and Chichester, magnificent castles like Hever, Leeds and Arundel, princely residences like the Royal Pavilion at Brighton and historic houses like Chartwell and Bateman's -- all set in England's most fruitful countryside. Book excerpt: Mrs Samuelson was part of a movement in the 1920s and 30s for preserving English regional recipes before they were lost for ever. This book, published in 1937, was a fruit of that campaign. A number of the recipes printed here are from her own very large collection of cookery books. Others come from local manuscripts that were still to be found at that time in the libraries of the families for whom they were written, the most notable being Philadelphia Shoebridges manuscript cookery book of 1708. Sussex Pies and Sussex Pond Pudding (still a favourite today) are here, as well as Sussex Hogs Pudding, Tipsy Kent Squire and recipes from the Countess of Kents book of 1671. The range of ingredients is unusually wide, but adventurous cooks can still use most of these recipes today. This is the first reprint of this interesting title. It contains delightful period black and white drawings by Vincent Hill from the original book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable and eccentric insight into the south east of England in the pre-war period. Richard Wyndham's 'last look round' was a tour taken immediately before the Second World War in 1939 and was originally published in the following year as South-Eastern Survey. Wyndham is a very agreeable companion as he travels in his self-confessed 'haphazard' way around the counties of Sussex, Kent and Surrey. Often eccentric but always good fun, he drives 'for the most part on side roads only, and through villages and lesser towns.' A selection of Wyndham's own black and white photographs taken on his expedition are included. Sussex, Kent and Surrey 1939 is a wonderful insight into south east of England before the outbreak of the Second World War, which brought so much change to the country. Wyndham is a superb travel companion who completed the writing as he was called up for active service.

Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised and updated edition of KEITH SPENCE's essential guide to two of the most beautiful - and often still unspoiled - counties in England, which on its first publication quickly established itself as the best available guide to the area. Mr Spence shows how much as yet survives and how rich, varied and fascinating this part of England still is. He writes sensitively and knowledgeably about buildings and architecture, and has a keen sense of the detail that gives identity to a place. There is much to be learned from this book, which maintains the high standard of the Companion Guide series. OBSERVER

Book excerpt: The Wealds of Kent, Surrey and Sussex had detractors over almost all their history but are now regarded as embodying England at its most characteristically delightful. The author explores how places such as Ashdown Forest and wooded west Kent, which were long disliked and even feared, have come to be perceived as jewels of landscape for leisure and recreation. He also traces the unremitting labour of generations of the region's small farmers to clear and settle a great expanse of wild country that has resulted in one of the most notable pieces of man's handiwork in Europe, and which has persisted to an astonishing degree relatively unchanged over a course of some eight centuries or more. This human story began as a saga of man against forest and continued as one of the interaction of man with trees - cared for to provide shipbuilding timber and fuel; to sustain the region's handicrafts; saved from the forester's axe to provide sporting pleasures and planted in pineta, arboreta and 'wild gardens' by Victorian and Edwardian 'nouveaux riches'. This book will enrich the enjoyment of those who reside in the Weald or live in sight of it and is essential reading for those whose interest in it is as landowner, farmer, ecologist, planner, conservationist, councillor or local historian.
