Book excerpt: For the eighth time, the German Research Foundation's (DFG) Research Training Groups (RTG) in Computer Science meet at Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz Center for Informatics, one of the world's premier venues for computer science. To provide an overview of the entire meeting and to enable a better connection of students with similar topics, every student of each group submited a one-page abstract introducing their work. The proceedings of this year's workshop contain these abstracts, along with a brief overview of each group's focus.

Book excerpt: This thesis is dedicated to the problem of object recognition in the three-dimensional space. Instead of using exclusively the information typically transported by a two-dimensional image, the concept of this work additionally incorporates the third dimension, namely the depth. The depth data itself is captured by sensors capable of measuring the distance from the device's position to those objects residing inside its field of view. The actual recognition process is implemented in analogy to the Path Similarity Skeleton Graph Matching (PSSGM). Basically, this method represents a 2D object by its skeleton and uses the idea of shortest paths to describe it. Finally, the similarity between two objects is calculated based on the Hungarian method. The contribution of the current work maps this approach into the three-dimensional space and applies it to 3D objects. While one of the experiments aims at the recognition of 3D chairs and tables, another one is devoted to the registration of fully segmented vascular structures. Excellent and promising recognition results are achieved in challenging evaluation setups showing that the 3D version of the PSSGM has the potential to solve complex recognition tasks.

This book was released on 1992-08-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has its source in the question of whether any knowledge engineering tools can be applied or analyzed in cognition research and what insights and methods of cognitive science might be relevant for knowledge engineers. It presents the proceedings of a workshop organized by the Special Interest Groups Cognition and Knowledge Engineering of the German Society for Informatics, held in February 1992 in Kaiserslautern. The book is structured into three parts. The first part contrasts work in knowledge engineering with approaches from the side of the "soft sciences". The second part deals with case-based approaches in expert systems. Cognition research and the cognitive adequacy of expert systems are discussed in the third part. Contributions from Canada, England, France, Switzerland, and the USA demonstrate how knowledge engineering and cognitive science are woven together internationally.
