Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: Content I. Introduction II. Analysis and Interpretation 1. Catherine's Qualifications 2. Catherine's Weaknesses III. Conclusion IV. Bibliography I. Introduction In the British fiction of the nineteenth century female protagonists were especially outstanding and not only used by Jane Austen, who wrote about Elizabeth Bennet, Emma Woodhouse or Catherine Morland, just to name a few of them, but also by Sir Walter Scott with his heroine Jeanie Deans (cf. Morgan 559). Many other authors of the nineteenth century chose a heroine as a main character and not a hero, even if there are very well men participating in the story, but they only have a minor role and represent the counterpart to the women (cf. Morgan 559). Now the question may arise why especially in that century women played the major role in the novels whereas before and after that the protagonists had mostly been male (cf. Morgan 560). (...)Instead, it is to take a closer look at one of these heroines, which is Catherine Morland. The aim of this work is to decide whether she is an ideal heroine or not. To come to a decision it is necessary to analyse her character as well as her actions. Since the whole story, as well as all the other protagonists, are set around her, the reader gets to know how Catherine feels, how she thinks, and especially learns a lot about her likes and dislikes. We do not get as much information about other characters as we get about Catherine. But if we look closer at the person of Catherine, it becomes questionable whether it is justified to award the title of an ideal heroine to her. The reader accompanies her through her whole stay in Bath and Northanger Abbey and has a chance to observe her behaviour in crucial situations. This observation is often bilateral, as on the one hand we can see the self-confident girl travelling on her own, and on the other hand her childish behaviour and her naivete point out that she is not yet a grown-up. This becomes notably evident when we compare her to the other characters in the novel. Nevertheless, this has to be analysed in detail in order to make a fair decision. In the following passages I would therefore firstly like to illustrate to what extend one can call Catherine an ideal heroine, what her strengths are and when she might be superior to other persons, and secondly, this should be contrasted to the attributes which disqualify her to be labelled such in regard to the weak points in her character and behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First accepted by a publisher in 1803, Northanger Abbey was eventually published posthumously in 1818. In it Austen weaves a romance full of suspense and comedy around the heroine Catherine Morland”s first foray into society. The style of the novel is a unique hybrid; along the way Austen parodies the eighteenth-century novel of manners, the Gothic novel, and even the educational treatises of the time. The second Broadview edition includes a revised introduction, notes, bibliography, and expanded appendices of background contextual materials.

Book excerpt: Here for the first time is a captivating autobiography of a French girl raised in the wild Moroccan frontier by her communist parents who fled France and vowed that no one would speak to her of God and influence the development of her mind with oppressive superstition. Everything in her education, environment and training was targeted toward making her a perfect product of Marxist atheism. She sucked anti-Catholicism with her mother's milk. But God had other plans for Lucette. Emotionally neglected by her parents, Lucette became a difficult child leading a colorful life full of mischievous adventure all the while experiencing an unutterable loneliness. But the Hound of Heaven was gently pursuing her. At the age of three, upon witnessing the overwhelming beauty of a sunset after a violent sirocco sand storm, she gained the unshakable certainty that this beauty was created, and that there was a God. She began to pray. That was the first link in a chain of remarkable events that grace alone could forge, which led her to embrace the faith and become a Poor Clare nun in Algiers. Disowned by her parents, she put all her trust in Him for whom all things are possible. Her faith was rewarded with a dramatic answer to the prayers of her heart. Lucette, now Mother Veronica Namoyo, is an Abbess and foundress of two flourishing monasteries in Africa.

Here are such well-known songs and sonnets as "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning," "The Extasie," and "A Nocturnall Upon S. Lucies Day," along with the love elegies "Jealosie," "His Parting From Her," and "To His Mistris Going to Bed." Presented as well are Donne's satires, epigrams, verse letters, and holy sonnets, along with his most ambitious and important poems, the Anniversaries. In addition, there is a generous sampling of Donne's prose, including many of his private letters; Ignatius His Conclave, a satiric onslaught on the Jesuits; excerpts from Biathanatos, his celebrated defense of suicide; and his most famous sermons, concluding with the final "Death's Duell." "We have only to read [Donne]," wrote Virginia Woolf, "to submit to the sound of that passionate and penetrating voice, and his figure rises again across the waste of the years more erect, more imperious, more inscrutable than any of his time."
