Book excerpt: SURVEY OF OBSERVATIONAL DATA ON INFRARED EMISSION FROM CELESTIAL OBJECTS IS PRESENTED AND CORRELATED WITH RECENT THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS. Spectral distribution of the radiation is analyzed with regard to departures from blackbody radiation predictions based upon effective temperatures and stellar spectral classification. Application of these data to infrared systems is discussed and the infrared background radiance values due to the galactic and solar systems are calculated. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the infrared celestial background was conducted at the Mt. John University Observatory of the South Island, New Zealand, from October 1966 through October 1967. The instrument used for the survey of the sky at 2.2 microns from -30 degrees to the South Celestial Pole is a 24-inch, f/2 cast aluminum parabolic mirror, Kanigen-nickel coated, polished to one wave (1/4 wave in the infrared), and aluminized. The data gathered in the survey indicate that the southern sky is rich in objects bright in the infrared. In particular, a 2 x 4 minute of arc diffuse source was discovered in the direction of a dark nebula in the Milky Way. (Author).

Book excerpt: A short review is given of the literature pertinent to the bolometric correction. A recommended scale of bolometric corrections is presented based upon recent model atmospheres for stars of early spectral type, and upon stellar energy distributions synthesized from photoelectric observations of stars later than FO V. The reduction of various photoelectrically determined magnitude and color systems to a common system and the further reduction of these measurements to absolute energy units is discussed in some detail. Book excerpt: A revolution similar to that brought by CCDs to visible astronomy is still ahead in IR and submillimeter astronomy. There is certainly no wavelength range which has, over the past several years, seen such impressive advances in technology: large-scale detector arrays, new designs for cooling in space, lightweight mirror technologies. Scientific cases for observing the cold universe are outstanding. Observations in the FIR/Submm range will provide answers to such fundamental questions as: What is the spectrum of the primordial fluctuations? How do primeval galaxies look? What are the first stages of star formation? Most of the international space missions that have been triggered by these questions are presented in detail here. Technological issues raised by these missions are reviewed, as are the most recent achievements in cooling and detector technologies.

Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

This book was released on 1980 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AFGL Infrared Sky Survey data have been processed to deconvolve the low frequency attenuation, restoring the signals from extended sources. The 11 and 20-micrometer scans which cover three quarters of the galactic plane have been analyzed, with lesser area covered at 4 and 27 micrometers. A detailed description is given of the instrumentation, the conduct of the experiment, and the data reduction procedures. The measured extended emission in the 3- to 30-micrometer region may be divided into several components. A number of discrete, extended sources are observed within 5 deg of the galactic plane, the majority of which are associated with HII regions. About 25 percent of these sources are not in the AFGL catalog. A large scale diffuse emission is centered on the galactic plane at longitudes less than 90 deg from the galactic center. The 11 to 20-micrometer color ratio of this emission is distinctly smaller in the direction of the Perseus external arm and the Sagittarius-Carina spiral than closer to the center (1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Despite the great technical difficulties of building detectors in a cryogenic environment, the scientific advances in infrared astronomy have been astounding. In the near future many more advances can be expected from still newer developments in telescope and detector designs. High quality detector arrays and passively cooled telescopes are very promising techniques for achieving considerably larger apertures. This volume contains the refereed papers from the workshop on 'Next Generation Infrared Observatory', dealing with all new aspects of future infrared telescopes.
