Book excerpt: The essential resource for readers needing to understand visual perception and for those trying to produce, reproduce and measure color appearance in various applications such as imaging, entertainment, materials, design, architecture and lighting. This book builds upon the success of previous editions, and will continue to serve the needs of those professionals working in the field to solve practical problems or looking for background for on-going research projects. It would also act as a good course text for senior undergraduates and postgraduates studying color science. The 3rd Edition of Color Appearance Models contains numerous new and expanded sections providing an updated review of color appearance and includes many of the most widely used models to date, ensuring its continued success as the comprehensive resource on color appearance models. Key features: Presents the fundamental concepts and phenomena of color appearance (what objects look like in typical viewing situations) and practical techniques to measure, model and predict those appearances. Includes the clear explanation of fundamental concepts that makes the implementation of mathematical models very easy to understand. Explains many different types of models, and offers a clear context for the models, their use, and future directions in the field.

The latter is playing an increasingly important role in nearly all of our buying decisions: it informs us as to the quality of an automobile cabin, the desirability of an iPhone, the handle of a woollen sweater - the list is endless.Given the exponential rise in internet commerce and the ubiquity of smart devices, the ability to predict buyers' perceptions formed from interaction with digital media is maybe more important than those obtained by handling the real article. Thus, the science of appearance metrology is becoming increasingly critical. It concerns the development of methodologies, procedures, and equipment which allow us to predict observers' perceptions. The field is therefore highly multidisciplinary: physical measurement, psychophysics, media generation, image processing, statistics, and vision science. This book is a compilation of recent research relating to perception and appearance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this third edition of Nelson Goodman's The Structure of Appear ance, we are pleased to make available once more one of the most in fluential and important works in the philosophy of our times. Professor Geoffrey Hellman's introduction gives a sustained analysis and appreciation of the major themes and the thrust of the book, as well as an account of the ways in which many of Goodman's problems and projects have been picked up and developed by others. Hellman also suggests how The Structure of Appearance introduces issues which Goodman later continues in his essays and in the Languages of Art. There remains the task of understanding Good man's project as a whole; to see the deep continuities of his thought, as it ranges from logic to epistemology, to science and art; to see it therefore as a complex yet coherent theory of human cognition and practice. What we can only hope to suggest, in this note, is the b. road Significance of Goodman's apparently technical work for philosophers, scientists and humanists. One may say of Nelson Goodman that his bite is worse than his bark. Behind what appears as a cool and methodical analysis of the conditions of the construction of systems, there lurks a radical and disturbing thesis: that the world is, in itself, no more one way than another, nor are we. It depends on the ways in which we take it, and on what we do.

Book excerpt: Any dreams that Europe had at last become too mature a society of states for the continent to be afficted by bloody international disputes have been shattered in recent months. This unique book examines both the sources of disputes -the delimination of boundaries, ethnic differences, human rights violations, environmental damage, drug control, etc. -& the most appropriate methods for settling them. The examination is thorough & detailed, & the result is a substantial work, authored by leading authorities, many of whom have played major roles in devising & operating dispute settlement procedures. This bilingual (English & French) volume is destined to become an important vade-mecum for diplomats & officials, & a reference work of permanent significance for students, academics & all those interested in international law & relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping and localization are two essential tasks in autonomous mobile robotics. Due to the unavoidable noise that sensors present, mapping algorithms usually rely on loop closure detection techniques, which entail the correct identification of previously seen places to reduce the uncertainty of the resulting maps. This book deals with the problem of generating topological maps of the environment using efficient appearance-based loop closure detection techniques. Since the quality of a visual loop closure detection algorithm is related to the image description method and its ability to index previously seen images, several methods for loop closure detection adopting different approaches are developed and assessed. Then, these methods are used in three novel topological mapping algorithms. The results obtained indicate that the solutions proposed attain a better performance than several state-of-the-art approaches. To conclude, given that loop closure detection is also a key component in other research areas, a multi-threaded image mosaicing algorithm is proposed. This approach makes use of one of the loop closure detection techniques previously introduced in order to find overlapping pairs between images and finally obtain seamless mosaics of different environments in a reasonable amount of time.
