Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Measure in Education The science of measurement is in its infancy and the art of measurement is younger still. Yet both have developed at such a phenomenal rate in the last few years as to make this movement for the mental measurement of children the most dramatic tendency in modern education. Educators returning from a few years sojourn in foreign missionary fields testify that no recent change in educational practices compares with that effected by the growth of scientific educational and intelligence testing. During the war, and since, it was my privilege to confer with educational or military commissions sent here by several foreign governments to study our schools. These representatives testified that the extensive use of scientific mental measurement was one of the most distinctive features of American education. This book describes rather fully the meaning and methods of this movement. The art of measurement is younger than the science of measurement because the abler workers have, of necessity, devoted their energies almost exclusively to the origination of foundational techniques. But the whole movement was so promising in the way of concrete assistance in meeting educational problems that practical educators have irresistibly demanded that the science of measurement be turned into the art of measurement almost overnight. Hence the last two or three years has witnessed a feverish effort to meet these demands. The result has been numerous mistakes and remarkable successes. This book has a fourfold aim. First, it aims to present these successes and warn against a repetition of the mistakes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For this reason it is particularly appropriate that the Council's Committee on Measurement and Guidance should have planned the general character and manner of executing the publication of the present book on educational measurement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Tests and Measurements Still more recently, and wholly within the past decade, a still better method for the evaluation of the work which teachers and schools are doing has been evolved. This new method consists in the setting up, through the medium of a series of carefully devised Standardized Tests, of standard measurements and units of accomplishments for the deter mination of the kind and the amount Of work which a school or a school system is doing. This new movement is as yet almost in its infancy, but so important is it in terms of the future Of school administration that it already bids fair to change, in the course of time, the whole character of this professional service. The significance of these new standards of measurement for our educational service is indeed large. Their use means nothing less than the ultimate transformation Of school work from guesswork to scientific accuracy; the elimination of favoritism and politics from the work; the ending for ever of the day when a personal or a political enemy of a superintendent can secure his removal, without regard to the efficiency of the school system he has built up; the substitution of well-trained experts as superintendents of schools for the Old successful practitioners; and the chang ing of school supervision from a temporary or a political job, for which little or no preparation need be made, to that of a highly skilled piece of social engineering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gary Public Schools: Measurement of Classroom Products In the last few years both laymen and professional educators have engaged in a lively controversy as to the merits and defects, advantages and disadvantages of What has come to be called the Gary idea or the Gary plan. The rapidly increasing literature bearing on the subject is, however, deficient in details and too often partisan in tone. The present study was undertaken by the General Education Board at the request of the Gary school authorities for the purpose of presenting an accurate and comprehensive account of the Gary schools in their significant aspects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental and Educational Measurements of the Deaf This chapter rightly should begin in the early ages, when special attention was directed toward the deaf only with the idea of saving their souls. In order to accomplish this end it was thought that the deaf child must be taught to repeat and under stand the Creed and Commandments of the Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Measurement of Teaching Efficiency Efficiency in any work deals with details and particulars which are so numerous that standards and measures must be explicit and definite. To state that efficiency is the process by which to secure the maximum of result with the minimum of work and material is to stir up further inquiries as to what a good result is and how it may be attained. General directions and principles are here of little use for quiet effective action, and for products economically brought forth. On this account, any practical scheme for measuring the efficiency of teaching must be extremely detailed and specific. In making five divisions for most of the merits there is no assumption on my part that any magic potency inheres in this number. It is simply convenient for purposes of classification, and sufficient for the detail necessary in distributing the constituent excellencies of any unit. Whatever unit or standard is taken can readily be divided into as many parts as one desires, whether the number be three, four, five six, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
