Book excerpt: Economics is the nexus and engine that runs society, affecting societal well-being, raising standards of living when economies prosper or lowering citizens through class structures when economies perform poorly. Our society only has to witness the booms and busts of the past decade to see how economics profoundly affects the cores of societies around the world. From a household budget to international trade, economics ranges from the micro- to the macro-level. It relates to a breadth of social science disciplines that help describe the content of the proposed encyclopedia, which will explicitly approach economics through varied disciplinary lenses. Although there are encyclopedias of covering economics (especially classic economic theory and history), the SAGE Encyclopedia of Economics and Society emphasizes the contemporary world, contemporary issues, and society. Features: 4 volumes with approximately 800 signed articles ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 words each are presented in a choice of print or electronic editions Organized A-to-Z with a thematic Reader's Guide in the front matter groups related entries Articles conclude with References & Future Readings to guide students to the next step on their research journeys Cross-references between and among articles combine with a thorough Index and the Reader's Guide to enhance search-and-browse in the electronic version Pedagogical elements include a Chronology of Economics and Society, Resource Guide, and Glossary This academic, multi-author reference work will serve as a general, non-technical resource for students and researchers within social science programs who seek to better understand economics through a contemporary lens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), as part of its broader effort to protect and advance political and economic freedoms and human rights, champions the United States' strategy for cyberspace to advocate for fundamental freedoms of speech and association through cyberspace; empower civil society actors, human rights activists, and journalists in their use of digital media; and encourage governments to limit neither the freedom of expression nor the free flow of information. To this end, DRL funds the development of many cyber security and privacy software programs. However, there are trade-offs associated with any such investment. On one hand, security and privacy tools can provide safe, reliable, and anonymous Internet access to people who could otherwise be censored, filtered, or punished for communicating electronically. On the other hand, these tools could also be used to conceal or commit illegal activity. This report examines the portfolio of tools funded by DRL that helps support Internet freedom and assesses the impact of these tools in promoting U.S. interests. First, we note the benefits of these tools in promoting DRL's mission of Internet freedom across the world. Second, we examine their potential for, and examples of, their illicit use. Third, we consider the ability of comparable tools, not funded by the DRL, to be used for such purposes. And fourth, we examine safeguards and design and service models that could limit or restrict the use of the technologies for illicit purposes. The report concludes that DRL's support for Internet freedom tools has not made them more likely to be used for illicit purposes, relative to alternative technologies not funded by the DRL"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and UK television star Alvin Hall demystifies the principles of personal money management, helping readers control their finances so they can move from confusion—about credit, debt, investments, and retirement—to clarity. Americans are finding themselves in tough situations in the midst of today’s volatile financial climate and more than ever need good guidance and discipline. In Your Money or Your Life, financial guru Alvin Hall shows how taking charge of money reduces stress in all aspects of life— work, day-to-day living, and relationships—and it’s never too late to start monitoring this crucial area of life and working towards achieving long-term financial goals. One of the keys to achieving financial success is to first learn how to distinguish between “wants” and “needs.” Hall instructs and empowers readers to create a budget that allots for life necessities and material desires. But he also warns readers to get to the emotional root of what causes them to “want” certain things and reconsider their desires carefully. Most importantly, Hall teaches readers how to recognize and manage their personal spending styles, how to find painless ways to save money, how to understand the real cost of credit card debt, how to pick the best mortgage package for them, how to plan for retirement, and how to evaluate insurance offers. With Your Money or Your Life, Alvin Hall provides sound financial advice that enables readers to make confident decisions and attain financial security.
