Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many changes are happening and coming in Asia. A small start-up, locally founded in Malaysia became a very successful brand in Asia. The small start-up battled against one of the most powerful companies in the category of business. At the beginning of its business, the small company was in a much worse situation compared to the established market leaders such as Uber in almost every aspect of business infrastructure, resources, and competencies. This is the story of Grab in the ride-hailing business in Asia. How was the small start-up able to grab the hearts of Asian consumers and transform itself into such a powerful brand within the short period of 5 to 6 years? Some spectacular news have also appeared in the automobile industry. Geely, a company which once produced refrigerators, scooters, and auto-bicycle wheels, became one of the three biggest car makers in China. The company, now called Geely Group, has owned the Swedish passenger car maker Volvo Cars since 2010 and became the biggest shareholder of Mercedes-Benz by owning 9.7% of its stocks. This kind of incredible transformation from a poor-quality or mediocre brand into a high-quality, top-selling brand is occurring all over Asia and will soon bring significant changes to the West and other countries. In addition to Grab in ASEAN and Geely in China, many other brands have been rising as incredibly successful brands all across Asia. The list may include Bluehole, Ctrip, Sony, Indomie, bKash, Patanjali, Traveloka, WeChat, and Maxim Group. All of these Asian brands achieved great success or re-created themselves as new leaders while many others struggled or failed under the fast-changing, turbulent environment. How were they able to take a quantum leap in terms of brand value by transforming their humble origins or crises into great opportunities and explosive successes? How did they achieve spectacular success in their areas of businesses by occupying a special place in the heart of consumers? The main purpose of this book series is to help you clearly understand how these Asian brands became incredibly successful in such a short period of time. Behind each case is a story that details the business's challenging yet exciting journey to becoming extraordinarily successful. The success stories of these Asian brands seem mysterious to many people. However, revisiting these companies' milestones and strategies may open the door to solving the seeming mysteries and give you valuable insight and break-through thinking for your own career and business. We hope you can learn how they turned their humble starts or mediocrity into great successes in the fast-changing, turbulent times, and then apply what you learn into your career and business to control your destiny in the age of rapid technological progress and great opportunity.

Book excerpt: The Korean Economy: From Growth to Maturity takes an in-depth, amalgamated look at the evolution of Korea’s globalization drive from the early 2000s (Kim Dae-jung regime, 1998–2003) to the present period (Park Geun-hye, 2013–2017). The book discusses the role of foreign companies on the sustainability of Korea’s economic growth, the relationship between the chaebol and the MNCs, the evolution of Korea's nation brand, and the role of the state in Korea’s new economic trajectory (globalization) since the 2000s. With data collected from fieldwork, the book provides both empirical and qualitative insights (economic, socio-cultural and political economic analysis) into the Korean political economy and would be a very useful reference to other emerging economies experiencing similar globalization paths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major analysis of how China is attempting to become a media and information superpower around the world, seeking to shape the politics, local media, and information environments of both East Asia and the World. Since China's ascendancy toward major-power status began in the 1990s, many observers have focused on its economic growth and expanding military. China's ability was limited in projecting power over information and media and the infrastructure through which information flows. That has begun to change. Beijing's state-backed media, which once seemed incapable having a significant effect globally, has been overhauled and expanded. At a time when many democracies' media outlets are consolidating due to financial pressures, China's biggest state media outlets, like the newswire Xinhua, are modernizing, professionalizing, and expanding in attempt to reach an international audience. Overseas, Beijing also attempts to impact local media, civil society, and politics by having Chinese firms or individuals with close links buy up local media outlets, by signing content-sharing deals with local media, by expanding China's social media giants, and by controlling the wireless and wired technology through which information now flows, among other efforts. In Beijing's Global Media Offensive--a major analysis of how China is attempting to build a media and information superpower around the world, and how this media power integrates with other forms of Chinese influence--Joshua Kurlantzick focuses on how all of this is playing out in both China's immediate neighborhood--Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand--and also in the United States and many other parts of the world. He traces the ways in which China is trying to build an information and influence superpower, but also critically examines the new conventional wisdom that Beijing has enjoyed great success with these efforts. While China has worked hard to build a global media and information superpower, it often has failed to reap gains from its efforts, and has undermined itself with overly assertive, alienating diplomacy. Still, Kurlantzick contends, China's media, information and political influence campaigns will continue to expand and adapt, helping Beijing exports its political model and protect the ruling Party, and potentially damaging press freedoms, human rights, and democracy abroad. An authoritative account of how this sophisticated and multi-pronged campaign is unfolding, Beijing's Global Media Offensive provides a new window into China's attempts to make itself an information superpower.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chen, He and Yan present a range of applications of multiple-source big data to core areas of contemporary sociology, demonstrating how a theory-guided approach to macrosociology can help to understand social change in China, especially where traditional approaches are limited by constrained and biased data. In each chapter of the book, the authors highlight an application of theory-guided macrosociology that has the potential to reinvigorate an ambitious, open-minded and bold approach to sociological research. These include social stratification, social networks, medical care, and online behaviours among many others. This research approach focuses on macro-level social process and phenomena by using quantitative models to statistically test for associations and causalities suggested by a clearly hypothesised social theory. By deploying theory-oriented macrosociology where it can best assure macro-level robustness and reliability, big data applications can be more relevant to and guided by social theory. An essential read for sociologists with an interest in quantitative and macro-scale research methods, which also provides fascinating insights into Chinese society as a demonstration of the utility of its methodology.
