Book excerpt: This handbook explains how to implement How are we doing?, a tool that enables participatory reflective monitoring in multi-stakeholder forums (MSFs). MSFs are spaces that include a wide range of stakeholders in a topic or region, to engage in dialogue, decision making and/or the implementation of activities for common landscape goals. How are we doing? supports enabling conditions to allow the MSF to achieve its goal(s) equitably and effectively. Here we provide a step-by-step process on how to do that. MSFs have gained much attention around the world because of their potential to improve collaboration between different actors, sectors and governance levels to address complex challenges, which cannot be resolved by one actor alone. They can also include actors that, throughout history, have not been able (or allowed) to participate in decision making on land use and land-use issues and/or the design of initiatives that may affect their rights, territories, lives and livelihoods. This handbook is the product of collaboration between members of MSFs and researchers from the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). The collaboration emerged from the identification of the need for a simple tool to allow MSF participants to monitor their forums, and reflect upon and improve their processes and results. In response, CIFOR held a series of participatory workshops in Indonesia and Peru to develop How are we doing?, to reflect on and learn from what the MSF has been doing well (and not so well); examine progress toward the objective(s), including the challenges faced and the ones still ahead; and support the annual planning process. How are we doing? has three main features that set it apart from other tools. First, it was developed together with members of several subnational MSFs. Second, it was designed to be used by MSF participants themselves, not to be applied by external evaluators. And, third, its objective goes beyond a simple assessment of indicators, rather inviting participants to discuss and reflect on their answers. The purpose of this reflection is to learn from the past, consider progress and obstacles to further progress, and collectively plan how to achieve the MSF’s goals in the future.

Book excerpt: Multi-stakeholder collaboration is an important process that can serve as a tool and strategy to solve complex issues and problems such as transforming national food systems towards more sustainable outcomes. This guide aims to support stakeholders working at all levels of the food system in the implementation of actions to transform their food systems. Centered on 5 building blocks underpinning successful multi-stakeholder collaboration for food systems transformation, the guide uses these constructions to illustrate ingredients of the process and show the interconnectedness of the steps needed to be successful. The guide also contains two annexes with a list of tools, and assessment questions. Annex 1 highlights a range of tools to support facilitators and participants with deeper guidance on a specific topic. Annex 2 contains a checklist of questions, customized to the content provided under each Building Block, and serves as an ongoing monitoring tool that can be used alongside the recommendations provided.

Book excerpt: An overarching goal of the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) has been to influence policy outcomes in ways that lead to agricultural transformation and economic inclusion. The technical quality of this research is well recognized (CAS Secretariat 2020). Yet, high-quality, rigorous research is not sufficient to achieve policy influence in any domain. Other factors may shape policy uptake — for instance, elections may alter policy priorities, ideological biases may hinder the acceptance of research findings, and vested interest groups may lobby against data-driven or evidence-informed recommendations. A political economy perspective allows for a more holistic and realistic understanding of how policies are determined by governments and which pathways are more viable for achieving development outcomes through policy change.

Book excerpt: Gender relations shape women’s and men’s identities, norms, rules, and responsibilities. They influence people’s access to, use, and management of land and other natural resources, including ownership, tenure, and user rights to land and forests. A substantial body of research on these issues comes from the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM), through its Flagship 5 research theme. Flagship 5 focused on gender and social inclusion in relation to land and natural resource tenure and to landscape governance, and analyzed how tenure security affects sustainable management of land, water, fish stocks, and forests. This Food Policy Report reviews the scientific contributions from Flagship 5 to the broader wealth of related literature, including key lessons about gender from these studies with respect to outcomes and impacts on natural resource management, food security, and poverty alleviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to work and manage others successfully in matrix organisations operating across regions and functions, with global teams, customers and supply chains. Traditional management training prioritizes clarity, predictability and control. In a matrix we need to be able to balance this with the ability to tolerate ambiguity, manage uncertainty and decentralize control. Managers need an expanded toolkit to help them move from the hard to the soft, from the concrete to the ambiguous and back again depending on the situation. Making the Matrix Work helps you develop your matrix mindset and will show you how to establish and engage networks that do not depend on role, control or authority to get things done. This 10 year anniversary edition has been extensively revised to cover Agile and digital working, for those working and managing in the fast paced new world of work, with autonomous teams, iterative working and non-hierarchical leadership. It will includes new material on alignment and connecting across silos, and on autonomous teams as well as 3 major new chapters on: Change and stability Hierarchy Networks There are updates to terms and techniques throughout the book to reflect hybrid and post pandemic working considerations and the impact of digital transformation.

Book excerpt: Key messagesMulti-stakeholder forums (MSFs) are increasingly seen as essential for collaboration -- across different levels of government and among multiple constituencies-- due to the growing urgency to address climate change and transform development trajectories.A review of the scholarly literature reveals that more equitable and resilient MSFs require a shift in emphasis away from how to design projects toward designing engagement in a way that addresses a specific situation or context.Designing for engagement combines top-down with bottom-up approaches, starting with a period of research and meetings at upper levels to understand the potential challenges that local project implementers face within the broader context they are encountering. This process is engaged, committed and adaptive, supporting a spirit of co-learning among all actors, building mutual respect and trust over time. This approach has the best chance of resilience in the face of change or challenge, and of leading to equitable outcomes -- and is not fostered by the increasingly short-term nature of donor funding and the emphasis on simple quantitative impact indicators.
