Book excerpt: This revised edition provides the basics of applying hazard and operability study (Hazop) and hazard analysis (Hazan). Hazop is a creative but systematic method of identifying hazards in process plants. Hazard analysis is then used to quantify the risks from these hazards, and to assess how far to go in reducing them. This book is presented in easy-to-read style and explains: what a Hazop is, who carries it out, when, and how long it should take; points to watch during a Hazop; an example of a Hazop; Hazops on flowsheets; the stages of Hazard analysis; the Fatal Accident Rate; risks to the public; estimating how often an accident will occur, with examples; and pitfalls in Hazan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book on the selection and application of electrical drives and control systems for electromechanical and mechatronics applications makes it uniquely useful for engineers in industry working with machines and drives. It also serves as a student text for courses on motors and drives, and engineering design courses, especially within mechanical engineering and mechatronics degree programs. The criteria for motor-drive selection are explained, and the main types of drives available to drive machine tools and robots introduced. The author also provides a review of control systems and their application, including PLCs and network technologies. The coverage of machine tools and high-performance drives in smaller applications makes this a highly practical book focused on the needs of students and engineers working with electromechanical systems. * An invaluable survey of electric drives and control systems for electromechanical and mechatronics applications * Essential reading for electrical and mechanical engineers using motors and drives * An ideal electric motors and drives text for university courses including mechatronics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant and Process Engineering 360 will be the backbone of any plant, chemical, or process engineer’s library. This is a broad area in which engineers need to be familiar with a wide array of techniques, technologies and equipment. Its focus on providing a broad introduction to key systems make the book the first point of reference for engineers who are involved with designing, specifying, maintaining or working with plant, process and control technologies in many sectors, including manufacturing, chemical process, and energy. A single-source of plant and process equipment information for engineers, providing a 360 degree view of the critical equipment engineers encounter Enables readers to get up to speed with unfamiliar topics quickly with an overview of important but disparate technologies that are specific to plant engineering Covers the systems and processes that drive effective and efficient plants and processes Drawn from authoritative Elsevier resources, this book is a ‘first port of call’ with breadth and depth of content, from leading figures in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability-based design is relatively well established in structural design. Its use is less mature in geotechnical design, but there is a steady progression towards reliability-based design as seen in the inclusion of a new Annex D on "Reliability of Geotechnical Structures" in the third edition of ISO 2394. Reliability-based design can be viewed as a simplified form of risk-based design where different consequences of failure are implicitly covered by the adoption of different target reliability indices. Explicit risk management methodologies are required for large geotechnical systems where soil and loading conditions are too varied to be conveniently slotted into a few reliability classes (typically three) and an associated simple discrete tier of target reliability indices.
