Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game Day and God: Football, Faith, and Politics in the American South takes seriously the often-stated assertion that college football in the South is a religion. To this end, Eric Bain-Selbo draws upon a wide range of theoretical approaches in religious studies and cultural criticism. He also relies upon field research on several campuses in the Southeastern Conference where he interviewed fans and experienced "game day." Consequently, the author is able to make the case that college football does function religiously for many people in the South. In addition, the author introduces key concepts and theories of religion and culture to a general audience Game Day and God also recounts the role that college football has played in Southern history and culture. Going back as far as the Civil War, the work explains the cultural meaning of college football in the South, delivering a much-needed critical perspective to the subject Scholars of religion will find the work a compelling extension of key concepts and theories to an otherwise "secular" activity. Scholars of American culture and sports will find the work to be an interesting case study, one that-unlike much work in the area-focuses our attention on the religious dimension of the phenomenon of sport in American culture. And general readers will find that college football or any sport can be much more than they imagined as well as discover important theories with which to make sense of the complexity of our daily lives Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Daily Devotions for Die-Hard Fans: Alabama Crimson Tide combines the great passion of the Crimson Tide fan with the great passion of the fan of Christ into one set of devotions, one book that is fun while providing a time of reflection about God. - In one of the biggest games in Bama basketball history, the subs refused to go in. - Bear Bryant learned an invaluable lesson once when he stopped in a diner for lunch.- Jay Barker was once grateful that he was benched.- No matter how hard he tried, Don McNeal couldn't kill Kate. - At least one time, Bear Bryant was wrong; Mark Ingram proved that. These stories and more are recounted here. Also appearing are Nick Saban, Joe Namath, Gene Stallings, Niesa Johnson, Ozzie Newsome, and many others. Their stories along with legendary games, impossible victories, and historical events are told with a twist: They are all tied to God's story. Have fun! Have faith! Roll Tide! Go God!

An EF4 tornado ripped through the small college town and changed it forever. Carson Tinker, the starting long snapper for the 2011 and 2012 National Champion Crimson Tide, was among those forever changed by the events of April 27. Tinker lost his girlfriend Ashley Harrison to the storm, but not his faith. In the midst of unfathomable destruction, Tinker saw love, companionship, perseverance, and triumph in a community torn apart by a natural disaster. Where everyone else saw tragedy, Carson Tinker saw blessing. Following the storm, the Crimson Tide suited up to face their most challenging season to date. Tinker’s personal story guides readers through what cannot be described any other way than a season to remember.

Book excerpt: Using humor and insight, Dr. Holdsambeck describes the life of a man rearing daughters. Each chapter has a unique theme that draws from either simple observations ("they smell babies") or years of clinical experience ("special moms"). The themes were designed to highlight how differently some dads and their daughters experience the world. Dr. Holdsambeck is a psychologist and a board certified behavior analyst. He has been a tenured instructor of psychology and a clinician for decades. He has been an invited speaker at many symposiums and scientific conferences. Most importantly however, he is a father of three girls. Anyone who has had the task of getting young ladies off to school ("graduating magna comb loudly") or coaching them in adolescence ("devine cat herding") will instantly relate to those chapters. Some of the chapters tackle serious subjects like our relationship with money or raising children with special needs but most were selected simply to amuse. Enjoy!
