Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fun About Fords At the present writing, consistent with its popularity, the Ford auto mobile is made the subject of many good-natured anecdotes. It must be a mighty good car to carry all the wheezes that are crowded onto it.' Why the Ford is chosen for all auto mobile jests, I do not know, unless it is because nobody enjoys a Ford story more than a Ford owner, and there are more Ford automobiles than any other kind. Nobody takes these stories seriously, for we all know the Ford stands up with the best of them and we buy one when we want the most for our money. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ford The Barony of Gleddayne of the Ford is one of the most ancient in the English peerage, being of Queen Elizabeth's creation. The family who hold the title were settled at the Ford before the Wars of the Roses. They defended it for the House of Lancaster in many sharp fights; and Sir Richard Gleddayne, the representative of the house at this date, was slain in the ford itself, so that its waters were dyed with his blood; and his ghost, clad in full armour, and mounted on a magnificent horse, - whose reasons for sharing in his master's haunting proclivities have never been ascertained, - has from time to time been seen to cross the stream on moonlight nights, usually as a prelude to some misfortune in the family. There was another Gleddayne killed on the river bank during the Civil War, when he, with his retainers, was holding the Ford desperately against an overwhelming body of Puritans. But being of diffident nature - or, perhaps, unable to procure a ghostly charger, - he did no haunting. After that, the Gleddaynes carried their martial spirit farther from home; and though several members of the family have since died on the battlefield, their blood did not stain the land of their birth. Book excerpt: Tim Moore - indefatigable travelling everyman – switches two wheels for four as he journeys across Trumpland in an original Model T Ford. ‘Alarmingly full of incident, very funny – even mildly transformative’ Daily Mail Lacking even the most basic mechanical knowhow, Tim Moore sets out to cross Trumpland USA in an original Model T Ford. Armed only with a fan belt made of cotton, wooden wheels and a trunkload of ‘wise-ass Limey liberal gumption’, his route takes him exclusively through Donald-voting counties, meeting the everyday folks who voted red along the way. He meets a people defined by extraordinary generosity, willing to shift heaven and earth to keep him on the road. And yet, this is clearly a nation in conflict with itself: citizens ‘tooling up’ in reaction to ever-increasing security fears; a healthcare system creaking to support sugar-loaded soda lovers; a disintegrating rust belt all but forgotten by the warring media and political classes. With his trademark blend of slapstick humour, affable insight and butt-clenching peril, Tim Moore invites us on an unforgettable road trip through America. Buckle up!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Stewart once said, "For John Ford, there was no need for dialogue. The music said it all." This lively, accessible study is the first comprehensive analysis of Ford's use of music in his iconic westerns. Encompassing a variety of critical approaches and incorporating original archival research, Kathryn Kalinak explores the director's oft-noted predilection for American folk song, hymnody, and period music. What she finds is that Ford used music as more than a stylistic gesture. In fascinating discussions of Ford's westerns—from silent-era features such as Straight Shooting and The Iron Horse to classics of the sound era such as My Darling Clementine and The Searchers —Kalinak describes how the director exploited music, and especially song, in defining the geographical and ideological space of the American West.
