Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Psychology - Personality Psychology, grade: 65, University of Warwick, language: English, abstract: Freud’s conception of a ‘polymorphous perverse’ infantile sexuality in the Three Essays emerges from his radical deconstruction of the traditional view of sexuality as a biological ‘instinct’ to reproduce. What are some of the key characteristics and gains of the Freudian view of sexuality? What does the clinical study of `Little Hans’ have to add to this picture?

Book excerpt: According to Sigmund Freud, young children are, by nature, "polymorphously perverse” and while their infantile sexuality is swiftly suppressed it is retained in their unconscious adult minds. Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s new publication documents in beautiful detail their critically acclaimed site-specific project at the Freud Museum, which was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize in 2007. This includes one of their characteristic self-portrait shadow sculptures 'Black Narcissus’, a plethora of silicone rubber casts of Webster’s fingers and Noble’s member in various states of arousal which was installed in Freud’s study. There is also detailed documentation and analysis of their complex kinetic sculpture 'Scarlett’ that was appropriately sited in the bedroom of Freud’s daughter, Anna, the founder of child psychology. Created from modified children’s toys and machine parts, 'Scarlett’ utilises the actual workbench from the artists’ studio, which they have used extensively over the past decade. Triggered by sensors the individual elements of this hybrid machine sculpture become animated to produce a dream-like cornucopia of repressed sexual and sadomasochistic fantasies and transgressions. The publication also provides a fascinating insight into Freud’s theories and how they relate to art practice with critical essays from the distinguished American art historian Linda Nochlin and James Putnam who curated the original exhibition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking psychoanalytic study on sexuality which maintains its originality today, forty-five years after its first publication. The book is a revision of psychoanalytic theory, starting with the work of Freud himself and including Melanie Klein's contributions on the early Oedipus Complex and the Depressive Position. But more than that, it is a metapsychological study of sexuality which provides a different perspective from more well-known ones that relate simply to a descriptive or behavioural point of view. In differentiating adult sexuality from infantile sexuality and polymorphism and perversion, taking unconscious phantasy and the notion of the primal scene as the pivotal point, Meltzer proposes a unified theoretical and clinical model which has proved of particular help in the field of the psychopathology of addictions and perversions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional psychoanalytical definition of perversion stresses deviant behaviour, including such categories as transvestism, fetishism, sexual sado-masochism, exhibitionism, voyeurism, paedophilia, and bestiality. However, as Freud noted, there are polymorphous perverse elements in everyone's sexual fantasies and behaviours, and the line between normality and abnormality is difficult to draw. In this book prominent psychoanalysts present the latest psychoanalytic perpectives on the perverse, expanding the definition to behaviours that are not overtly sexual and at the same time defining perversion more specifically.

Book excerpt: Theoretical understanding of perversion is neglected in analytical psychology, and narrowly developed in psychoanalysis, where it traditionally refers to sexual perversion. Etymological exploration of the word "perversion", including its use in religious, moral, sociological and legal contexts, reveals a wider meaning than that adopted in psychoanalysis. The aim of the author is to revise the psychoanalytic model through the introduction of Jungian concepts that extend the understanding of perversion beyond the bounds of sexuality to a more general relational context. By describing the development of psychoanalytic thinking on perversion in detail, the author is able to highlight the central differences between the Freudian and Jungian interpretive traditions and to explain why Jungian ideas on perversion have remained underdeveloped, leading to the absence of a unique or available Jungian contribution to the theory of perversion.

Book excerpt: Perversion - its ubiquity in infantile life and its persistence in the psychical and sexual lives of some adults - was a central element of Freud's lifelong work. The problem of perversion has since been revisited by many psychoanalytic schools with the result that Freud's original view of perversion has been replaced by numerous - often contradictory - perspectives on its aetiology, development and treatment. The concept of perversion has also been significant for the disciplines of cultural studies and gender and queer theory, which have explored the creative and dissident powers of perversion, while expressing a suspicion of its operation as a pathological category. This bi-partite collection offers a series of perspectives on perversion by a range of psychoanalytic practitioners and theorists (edited by Dany Nobus), and a selection of papers by scholars who work with, or critique, psychoanalytic theories of perversion (edited by Lisa Downing). It stages a serious dialogue between psychoanalysis and its commentators on the controversial issue of non-normative sexuality.
