Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Vicinity of New York It is a matter of common observation that these plants are not generally distributed throughout the region. In traveling from the Catskills to Cape May, the northern and southern limits of the area studied, we see a variety of plants found in one or the other of these widely separated localities, but not in both of them. Many species find their outposts of distribution near New York. Some appear to have come from the North or South, a few from the West, others are appar ently endemic in the area, and this great quantity of forms, the ap parent chaos of it all, raises many questions. What is the real com position of our flora, whence derived, and above all how did it reach its present luxuriance and beauty? The attempt to answer these ques tions necessitates a review of the causes that have influenced the origin and distribution of our native flora. For all practical purposes the agencies affecting the distribution of our native plants may be divided into edaphic and climatic ones. Under the first must be considered all questions of the relation of the vegetation to the soil and available water supply; or more simply stated the geological factors of distribution; under the second the relation of the flora to climate must be the chief concern. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Vicinity of New York: A Contribution to Plant Geography This book deals chiefly with the distribution of the flora near New York. Taxonomy and nomenclature are considered only as fundamentals upon which the phytogeographical structure of the book has been reared. This has been done because of the belief that local flora lists and manuals are significant chiefly as they are projectors of ideas rather than mere records of species, be those records ever so accurate. The attempt to explain the origin of the flora centering near the city, and the factors that have played their part in shaping its present composition, has, it seems to the writer, greater value than any enumeration of the species could possibly have. The opportunity for deductive reasoning on the distribution of our flora can be rightly based only on a complete and accurate record of the occurrence of individual species, authenticated by herbarium specimens and reliable field notes. Our knowledge, therefore, is limited by the amount and the availability of such information, and, in the present instance, no one is so conscious of the scarcity of such material as the writer. The book, therefore, is not so much a local flora as a method of writing one, - in some ways it is little more than a record of the incompleteness of our present knowledge. The work was begun at the New York Botanical Garden, in January, 1909, and continued until March, 1911. Since then it has been carried on at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where a division of time between it and increasing administrative duties became necessary. To the directors of both institutions grateful acknowledgement is due for much help and encouragement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants of Monroe County, New York and Adjacent Territory, Second Supplementary List: Hymenomyceteae of Rochester and Vicinity The number of introduced species is increasing rapidly every year. Many of these introductions are western plants and are found along the railroad tracks, which have been quite regularly patrolled by some of our members every season. In the summer of 1909 several species of plants foreign to our ora were found at Highland Park, in the southern part of the city. These plants were growing on newly seeded portions of the park. The grass seed used in sowing these places had been purchased from several different dealers and then mixed, so it was impossible to trace its origin, but the new species were mostly western plants. The same stock of grass seed was used for seeding the slopes of the Cobb's Hill reservoir, then lately completed, and the following year a large number of new species of plants were found thriving vigorously in this new home. Through the kindness Of Mr. C. C. Laney, Superintendent of Parks, these new plants were allowed to grow unmolested, and they increased in number and variety until 36 species foreign to our district had been found around the reser voir and at Highland Park. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Flora of Westchester County The botanists of New York city are active, industrious collectors, and have absolutely exhausted most of the localities within walking distance of the city; especially such portions of New Jersey, Staten Island and parts of Long Island. The Harlem River, however, seems to have been, to a great extent, the limit to their excursions in this direction; hence, this county is less known to New York botanists than any other region within the same distance of the city. The collecting of information has, therefore, been more formidable than suspected. The State of New York has a remarkably large Flora but it has a territory extending about 350 miles from north to south, and nearly the same distance from east to west-giving it a wide range of climate and temperature. It has plains along the coast elevated just a little above the sea level, and mountains on the eastern border rising feet above the ocean; it possesses every variety of soil, from the sands of the Saranac region to the alluvial plains of the western slope and the rich bottom lands of the head waters of the Susquehanna, and the val leys of the Mohawk and the Upper Hudson. Dr. Torrey, in his report of the Flora of the State, stated that the number of flowering plants would reach 5 and the Ferns and Lycopodiaceae, sixty. There will be great reason, then, for wonder, when it is found that the number of plants growing without cultivation in Westchester County a territory about fifty miles in extent from north to south, and whose average width from east to west is not half so much - is more than a thousand. There are flowering plants enumerated in this catalogue, and forty-six ferns and their allies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
