Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people in the US today are searching for meaning, longing for a spiritual home. Unfortunately, in ever increasing numbers, they fail to find either in our churches. In 1970, for example, only one in twenty Americans responded "none" when asked about their religious affiliation; today that number is closer to one in three. During the same period, the percentage of Americans who stated that they never attend religious services has increased from nine to 30 percent. Some blame secularization for the steady decline in Church affiliation; others point to the rise of individualism. Still others express frustration with the structure and politics of organized religion. They judge it to be more concerned with money, status, and influence than with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In recent years, the terms the "nones," "dones," and "seekers" have been used to describe those who find themselves alienated from traditional faith communities. Members of the first group have no religious affiliation; those in the second, once active in a Church, report that their spiritual needs are no longer being met there; those in the third group have not given up completely on organized religion. What has been the reaction of many mainstream churches to this growing phenomenon? Some have been at a loss as how to respond; others have failed to understand the deep sense of alienation experienced by so many; still others appear reluctant to take action to connect us all with the heartbeat and message of a God who loves us profoundly. Rarely have the "nones," "dones," and "seekers" heard a church minister say, "I get it," "I see it, "I've been there." We offer the reflections found in this book not only for those involved in Church life but also to help build a bridge between those alienated from organized religion and those of us involved in ministry within at least two of its denominations. The book is made up of a series of reflections. Many address challenges that are facing our world today: greater self-understanding, trust, love, a generous outreach to others, the need for prophetic leadership and greater care for the human community. Painful topics are also considered: racism, exclusion, poverty, sexual violence, the plague of COVID-19 as well as its devastating effects on the lives of so many. The reflections in this book have their origin in sermons and homilies given as part of Church services, on retreats, and during the celebration of life events such as baptisms, weddings, the commemoration of those who have died. The book's title has its origin in Luke's account of two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Its details are familiar: confused and demoralized, Cleopas and a companion are walking on the way to Emmaus when a stranger joins them. They are amazed that he appears ignorant of recent events in Jerusalem as well as the crucifixion of Jesus. They share their hopes, now dashed, that he might have been the Promised One. Slowly and steadily, the stranger explains the scriptures to them, shares the stories, makes sense of the tales. They press him to join them for dinner and to stay the night at an inn. It is in the breaking of the bread during dinner that they come to realize just who he is. It is the Lord. We hope that this book will appeal to readers who long to deepen their experience of God as well as to those who continue to search for a spiritual home. May it serve as a guide for us all as we seek to find the place of faith in our lives as well as for those of us who are eager to transform our religious institutions into the harbors of hope that they can and must be.

Book excerpt: "Neil Zurcher deftly observes things most of us would overlook, and that is what make his stories so enticing." --- Robin Swoboda "Neil's writing skills, wry wit, and calm, warm demeanor allowed him to move effortlessly from award-winning hard news reporter to Cleveland's king of travel." - Tim Taylor He met Prince Charles in a bathroom, and tripped and Tell on President Gerald Ford. He raced on an elephant, piloted a glider, and hung from a trapez. He survived a hotel fire, a tornado, and countless stunts for the camera. As a news reporter and host of the long-running "One Tank Trips" travel segment on Channel 8 in Cleveland, Neil visited every corner of Ohio (and beyond), met hundreds of unusual people, and took part in history-making events. He was tear-gassed at an anti-war protest and almost trapped inside the Ohio Penitentiary during a riot. He drove in a day-long high-speed police chase from Cleveland to Kentucky, and got lost in the middle of Lake Erie. He rode in jet boats, jet fighters, sternwheelers, a World War II tank, and almost every other kind of vehicle imaginable (most frequently his trademark red and white 1959 Nash Metropolitan). He was ordained as a minister in the Free Spirit Association Church and even officiated at a few weddings... He would do almost anything and go almost anywhere for a godo story. And in the process he became one of the most popular personalities on Cleveland TV. In this book, with his familiar folksy style, Neil shares dozens of his favorite personal stories from a lifetime in Cleveland television. Many will cause a chuckle, some will surprise, and all recall in era of television and of Northeast Olno that was full of color and characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary king Vikrama vows to an occultist that he will capture a Baital Pishacha, a celestial evil spirit. A Baital is an Indian equivalent of vampires in Western literature. It hangs upside-down from a tree and haunts graveyards to take demonic possession of corpses. King Vikrama faces several challenges in bringing Baital to the occultist. Each time Vikram tries to capture Baital, the ghoul tells a story that ends with a riddle. If Vikrama fails to answer the question correctly, the spirit agrees to remain in captivity. If the king knows the answer but still keeps quiet, his head shall burst into thousand pieces. And if King Vikrama answered the question correctly, Baital would flee and return to his tree. But the king knows the answer to every question, so will he ever catch the spirit? This curiosity ends later in the story, after many efforts made by the king to capture the demon fail. This collection presents immortal tales of ancient chivalry, wisdom, foolishness, honesty, and trickery. It is an English translation of the mythical stories of Vikram and Baital, originally written in Sanskrit. The translator has aimed to produce a work that would let people read the original text with accuracy.

Book excerpt: Bringing to light an entertaining array of anecdotes, this collection of police stories recalls some of the strangest, funniest, and most poignant accounts from the freeways, highways, and country roads throughout California. From the family who pulled over for a picnic on the median strip of a busy freeway to the angelic-looking 5-year-old girl who defused a tense traffic stop by sweetly confessing, "my daddy has a beer under the seat," this is an uncompromising view of the everyday pursuits, enforcement stops, arrests, accidents, and weird encounters that patrolmen must endure. Also featured is a panoply of unlikely drunk-driving suspects, including Santa Claus, a Boy Scout troop leader, a newlywed couple, and an airline pilot on his way to fly a plane; the traffic stop of an elderly driver whose license had expired 35 years earlier--and who explained he was on his way to the DMV; and many more hilarious, odd, and tragic stories of life and death on the open road. Encouraging a renewed respect for the men and women in uniform who risk their lives to protect the public, this compilation also contains advice on highway safety and how to behave when pulled over by a patrol officer.
