Book excerpt: “A superbly argued book.” —Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion The New York Times bestselling author of Why Evolution is True explains why any attempt to make religion compatible with science is doomed to fail In this provocative book, evolutionary biologist Jerry A. Coyne lays out in clear, dispassionate detail why the toolkit of science, based on reason and empirical study, is reliable, while that of religion—including faith, dogma, and revelation—leads to incorrect, untestable, or conflicting conclusions. Coyne is responding to a national climate in which more than half of Americans don’t believe in evolution, members of Congress deny global warming, and long-conquered childhood diseases are reappearing because of religious objections to inoculation, and he warns that religious prejudices in politics, education, medicine, and social policy are on the rise. Extending the bestselling works of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens, he demolishes the claims of religion to provide verifiable “truth” by subjecting those claims to the same tests we use to establish truth in science. Coyne irrefutably demonstrates the grave harm—to individuals and to our planet—in mistaking faith for fact in making the most important decisions about the world we live in. Praise for Faith Versus Fact: “A profound and lovely book . . . showing that the honest doubts of science are better . . . than the false certainties of religion.” —Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nowadays, beliefs rule the day. "Personal truth" is more important than "the truth." In one study, more than 91 percent of the respondents couldn't tell the difference between opinion and fact. For them, in other words, opinions are facts and beliefs are truth. In Believing is Seeing, former ABC News Science Editor and Harvard physics instructor Dr. Michael Guillen explains how every aspect of the human experience, from science to religion, is powered by one thing: faith. That includes your worldview. Powered by faith -- by beliefs you can't prove -- it dictates how you see everything and everyone, all the time. Believing is seeing. Are your beliefs true or untrue? Is your faith enlightened or misguided? The answers to those questions reveal whether your current worldview is dangerous or dependable. As Dr. Guillen explains in the pages of this book, what you believe is not just a matter of what's true or not true; it's a matter of life and death"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During forty years of caring for districts of churches and isolated believers, besides raising up new churches by evangelistic effort, the author of this work became greatly impressed with the need of educating the people in the fundamental doctrines of the Holy Scriptures. He has found very few who could give from the word of God an intelligent reason for even its most prominent and important truths. This spiritual poverty any minister will discover by personal investigation. When we add to this condition the fact that during the past thirty years new errors have been stealthily introduced among Christians generally--errors which undermine the very foundations of Bible truth and Christianity--it becomes evident that even professing Christians are unprepared for the crises they will be obliged to meet in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, Facts, Words and Beliefs is concerned primarily with formulating the following question and suggesting the right way of answering it- how can a few stray images or muttered words running through our mind constitute our envisagement of situation perhaps remote in time and place from our present position? From a practical point of view the moments when we envisage the nature of some situation which we believe to exist may not be of any great importance. It would seem that our belief in the existence of such situations lies in some sort of adjustment of our behaviour to them which will be useful if the situations really exist, from the point of view of survival and comfort. The author suggests that these moments of conscious envisagement of such absent situations may be rather a sign of such successful adjustment than a factor in bringing it about, hence of no practical value in themselves. However, if knowledge has any sort of intrinsic value, it must surely lie in those moments when one does consciously envisage some aspects of the world more or less as it really is, and to try to understand the nature of these moments is to try to understand all that is of intrinsic value in knowledge. This book is a must read for scholars and researchers of philosophy.
