Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of conditional optimization of the uniform (or C-) norm for polynomials and rational functions arise in various branches of science and technology. Their numerical solution is notoriously difficult in case of high degree functions. The book develops the classical Chebyshev's approach which gives analytical representation for the solution in terms of Riemann surfaces. The techniques born in the remote (at the first glance) branches of mathematics such as complex analysis, Riemann surfaces and Teichmüller theory, foliations, braids, topology are applied to approximation problems. The key feature of this book is the usage of beautiful ideas of contemporary mathematics for the solution of applied problems and their effective numerical realization. This is one of the few books where the computational aspects of the higher genus Riemann surfaces are illuminated. Effective work with the moduli spaces of algebraic curves provides wide opportunities for numerical experiments in mathematics and theoretical physics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions, and their Applications, held August 29-September 2, 2011, at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Leganes, Spain. The papers cover asymptotic properties of polynomials on curves of the complex plane, universality behavior of sequences of orthogonal polynomials for large classes of measures and its application in random matrix theory, the Riemann-Hilbert approach in the study of Pade approximation and asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials, quantum walks and CMV matrices, spectral modifications of linear functionals and their effect on the associated orthogonal polynomials, bivariate orthogonal polynomials, and optimal Riesz and logarithmic energy distribution of points. The methods used include potential theory, boundary values of analytic functions, Riemann-Hilbert analysis, and the steepest descent method.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers together selected works from the 2018 “Asymptotic, Algebraic and Geometric Aspects of Integrable Systems” workshop that was held at TSIMF Yau Mathematical Sciences Center in Sanya, China, honoring Nalini Joshi on her 60th birthday. The papers cover recent advances in asymptotic, algebraic and geometric methods in the study of discrete integrable systems. The workshop brought together experts from fields such as asymptotic analysis, representation theory and geometry, creating a platform to exchange current methods, results and novel ideas. This volume's articles reflect these exchanges and can be of special interest to a diverse group of researchers and graduate students interested in learning about current results, new approaches and trends in mathematical physics, in particular those relevant to discrete integrable systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains some of the most important results on the analysis of polynomials and their derivatives. Besides the fundamental results which are treated with their proofs, the book also provides an account of the most recent developments concerning extremal properties of polynomials and their derivatives in various metrics with an extensive analysis of inequalities for trigonometric sums and algebraic polynomials, as well as their zeros. The final chapter provides some selected applications of polynomials in approximation theory and computer aided geometric design (CAGD). One can also find in this book several new research problems and conjectures with sufficient information concerning the results obtained to date towards the investigation of their solution.
