Book excerpt: A long time ago botany used to be regarded as the scientia amabilis, the friendly science, eminently suitable for leisured amateurs. Since then, and particularly in this century, it has grown tremendously in its importance and in its intimate contacts with various other disciplines of science, some of which, like plant genetics and plant physiology, at one time indeed used to be included under the broad term botany. In spite of the fact that such subjects have expanded into major scientific fields of their own, botany, the mother science, continues to maintain its central place: this is because it deals with plants which constitute one of the most vital life-supporting systems of this planet. Furthermore, interacting and benefiting from advances made in other sciences, it has steadily progressed in a number of areas. Experimental embryology of vascular plants is one such field where spectacular advances have been made in recent years. The time is therefore particularly opportune for the publication of an authoritative book on the subject. It is very appropriate that the book has been planned and edited by Professor B. M. Johri, one of India's foremost botanists, whose contributions in embryology, plant morphology and morphogenesis are internationally known. He was closely associated over a number of years with Professor P. Maheshwari, the great botanist and embryologist, to whom the book is dedicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the experimental approach to the development of the whole plant. The book deals with lower vascular plants (i.e. ferns) and seed plants, beginning with the embryo and continuing through the phase of secondary growth (the vascular cambium). Rapid advances in molecular biology in recent years have made a significant contribution to the understanding of development and whenever possible these exciting findings have been drawn into the interpretation provided in this new edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a concise account of the historical aspects of the ‘history of biological sciences’, during the ancient, medieval and modern periods. The status of science in ancient civilizations has been traced and highlighted. Major discoveries and concepts which resulted n amelioration of human pain and suffering, environmental control in the evolution of more complex organisms and survival of the fittest have been adequately dealt with. Also discussed are the discoveries unraveling the secrets of heredity and inheritance of character. The role of physiological and biological processes in the growth of plants and their development, significance of hormones and vitamins have been nicely covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In vitro Embryogenesis in Plants is the first book devoted exclusively to this topic. As the ultimate demonstration of totipotency in plants, somatic and haploid embryogenesis is of vital importance to all those working on or interested in basic and applied aspects of plantlet information and regeneration. The text includes comprehensive reviews written by experts, on all facts of in vitro and in vivo embryogenesis. Some chapters deal with the morphogenic, structural and developmental, physiological and biochemical, and molecular biological aspects of the subject. Chapters are also devoted to haploid embryogenesis, asexual embryogenesis in nature, zygotic embryogenesis, and zygotic embryo culture. Detailed tables summarizing successful somatic embryogenesis in all vascular plants are also included. This book, therefore, brings together previously scattered information to provide an indispensable reference book for both active researchers, graduate students and anyone interested in this aspect of tissue culture technology and plant development.
