Book excerpt: As a retired explorer and archeologist, you've had your share of adventure. Now it's time to let someone else spelunk into hidden caverns and push deep into mysterious jungles, while you kick back and relax at home. When a bigfoot named Noro Bibble arrives at your home pitching the expedition of a lifetime, however, you're forced to consider one last trek to The Frozen Lake. Located just north of Billings, Montana, The Frozen Lake is a strange place of perpetual cold, a mysteriously deep pool of frigid water surrounded by dark and mysterious forest. Cobbler Industries has recently started drilling the depths of this beautiful natural site, hoping to find an underground cache of flowing chocolate milk, but there are some who believe they will drill straight into the cosmic Void itself. In this thrilling tale of The Tingleverse, you decide which path to take. With multiple endings to discover and several consequences to face, the reader is the star of the show as you explore the watery depths. Will you meet the mysterious woman who floats at the bottom of the lake and speaks in a voice of crunching marbles? Will you break through meta reality in an effort to escape the Void cultists and their carnivorous leader who are camped on the shore? Will you join forces with a machete-wielding sentient apple named The Apple Trapper, or will she end up turning you into one of her delicious pies? The decision is yours! Book excerpt: National bestseller A thrilling odyssey through an unforgiving landscape, from "Canada's greatest living explorer." In the spring of 2017, Adam Shoalts, bestselling author and adventurer, set off on an unprecedented solo journey across North America's greatest wilderness. A place where, in our increasingly interconnected, digital world, it's still possible to wander for months without crossing a single road, or even see another human being. Between his starting point in Eagle Plains, Yukon Territory, to his destination in Baker Lake, Nunavut, lies a maze of obstacles: shifting ice floes, swollen rivers, fog-bound lakes, and gale-force storms. And Shoalts must time his departure by the breakup of the spring ice, then sprint across nearly 4,000 kilometers of rugged, wild terrain to arrive before winter closes in. He travels alone up raging rivers that only the most expert white-water canoeists dare travel even downstream. He must portage across fields of jagged rocks that stretch to the horizon, and navigate labyrinths of swamps, tormented by clouds of mosquitoes every step of the way. And the race against the calendar means that he cannot afford the luxuries of rest, or of making mistakes. Shoalts must trek tirelessly, well into the endless Arctic summer nights, at times not even pausing to eat. But his reward is the adventure of a lifetime. Heart-stopping, wonder-filled, and attentive to the majesty of the natural world, Beyond the Trees captures the ache for adventure that afflicts us all.

Book excerpt: A spellbinding biography of Fridtjof Nansen, the pioneer of polar exploration, with a spotlight on his harrowing three-year journey to the top of the world. An explorer who many adventurers argue ranks alongside polar celebrity Ernest Shackleton, Fridtjof Nansen contributed tremendous amounts of new information to our knowledge about the Polar Arctic. At a time when the North Pole was still undiscovered territory, he attempted the journey in a way that most experts thought was mad: Nansen purposefully locked his ship in ice for two years in order to float northward along the currents. Richly illustrated with historic photographs, this riveting account of Nansen's Arctic expedition celebrates the legacy of an extraordinary adventurer who pushed the boundaries of human exploration to further science into the twentieth century. Book excerpt: This is book two of the Happiness story. It begins with Dianne's thoughts of going back to the island with a feeling of dread. She remembers the family history, all the problems that beset the family. The elderly couple decided to spend the winter on the island. They would be completely isolated during winter freeze up, again during spring break up. It would be necessary to cut six bush cords of firewood. How were they to get water from the frozen lake? November 23rd, the change-over from boat to snowmobile. The long wait for the ice to freeze. On December 30th they finally made it to Mactier, crossing three lakes and miles of bush trail. Dianne and Vincent were making regular trips to town, by snowmachine, pulling a sleigh for necessities. "Another fun trip to town " They seldom got out without several dives into deep snow, or running off the obscure trail. One day after a trip to Gravenhurst, pulling a heavy sleigh home with a load of propane, gasoline and food, Vincent ran off the trail on Duffy Lake. They were buried in 16" of slush. Dianne almost panicked, remembering previous, similar ordeals. They had to dig away the slush. Getting the machine started, revving the engine, the belt threw out a cloud of slush. Dianne driving, Vincent pulling, the machine jumped up on the hard trail. They returned to their cottage home before dark. Spring finally came. The ducks, loons, robins, cormorants came home. Beavers welcomed the arrival of spring. On Easter Sunday, April 20th they watched the phenomenon of the ice leaving. It was the most unusual experience of their lives. They were isolated again for a period to be decided by mother nature.
