Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Church Its Own Evangelist The man has not yet appeared Who is to say the final word on evangelism, nor is the time ripe for saying it. The time is always ripe, however, for the recital Of experience in a field so vast and yet so vital, so comprehensive and yet so central, as the evangelistic field. Evangelism cannot be epitomized in a sen tence, it cannot be compassed in an epigram, it cannot be reduced to a formulary statement. It is so much a part Of the religious life Of the church that it cannot be galvanized into nu changing forms nor comprehended in unchang ing methods. If it is to reach the life Of the day, it must express itself in the nomenclature Of the people; if it is to Win in the midst Of the intense social and commercial struggles and allurements, it must adapt itself to modern methods, literally becoming all things to all men. This modest volume is not an attempt to present an exhaustive treatise in evangelism. It is not a statement Of theory nor a philosophy of evangelistic procedure. Without it the ministry becomes formal, the Church cold, the world indifferent. A passion less ministry can never arouse a cold Church, and a cold Church can never witness convincingly to an indifferent world. The Christian Church to-day needs a revival Of praying, preaching, and personal testimony to the intent Of reaching and winning the lost to a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pastor His Own Evangelist: Methods, Texts, Seed Thoughts and Illustrations This book presents to us the ideal as regards evangelistic effort. There will always be a place in the Church for evangel ists who are called and equipped of God, and especially adapted by training and temperament to do a special work. I have always believed, and more firmly during the past few years than ever before, that the call to be an evangelist should be as distinct and clear as that which one receives to be a minister of the Gospel or a pastor of a Church. It ought to be true that every pastor would possess, in some slight degree at least, the gift to do evangelistic work, but even if this be true, neverthe less the fact remains as above stated, and in my own experience I was as clearly called to do the work to which I am now devot ing my life, as in the other days I was called to preach the Gospel in the church of a special congregation. However, I am clearly convinced that an evangelist cannot settle the prob lems of achurch, who as an emergency man is called to ren der a service which, when it is needed at all, is sorely needed. The only man of all others who can do this work and do it well, and do it continually, is the pastor himself. Any form of general evangelistic effort which does not leave him strong er in the afiection of his people is not worth while, and any evangelistic effort which fails to make his work easier when the special helper is gone, is not worthy of the name. Each pastor should be his own evangelist; at the same time, he should hold himself in readiness to assist his brother min isters. This is an ideal position to take and the suggestions made by the author of this book are practical and helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Evangelism: Personal, Trained, Co-Operative The remedy for all this is a new spiritual move ment, a gracious reinspiration of the Church, such as God effected through the Wesleys and their helpers. How shall it be realized? In answer to prayer, and by the introduction of many Christian people into such a love of Christ and desire for the coming of His kingdom as results only from the effort to bring others into a new life, or to lead them to dedicate themselves to the Offices of Christian usefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position of the Evangelical Party in the Episcopal Church IT is from no desire to intermeddle with the inter nal affairs of another denomination of Christians, that we introduce to our readers the subject which we have placed at the head of this article. Nor is it from any wish to take advantage of the present troubles and growing dissensions of' the Episcopal Church to make converts to our better faith, or to make reprisals for the accessions which they have sought to gain from the disputes and divisions of other denominations. We have listened in calmer times with preper interest to their proclamations of their own unity, while other churches have been rent into factions, or threatened with schism. We have seen a few from other churches, charmed with this proclamation of' unity, and professedly won by the hope of peace, leave the connections in which they were trained, and attach themselves to Episco pacy. But they have not been men whose departure the churches have had occasion to regard as a serious calamity, or whose recovery would be worth any very serious efi'ort. We are content that they should minister in their new connection, we hope with greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry The object of this book is to furnish some answer to this question; to indicate to priests and preach ers what it is which induces half the population of New York city to lay aside their commercial pur suits and gather in their churches every seventh day; to interpret to themselves the men and women who form these congregations, and explain to them what it is that they are often unconsciously Seeking; and to indicate to those who rarely or never do go to church the advantage which they might secure if they were in this respect to conform to the custom, not only of their fellow countrymen in America, but of their fellow men throughout the world. The Christian minister fulfills a fourfold func tion: he is pastor, administrator, priest, and prophet or preacher. As pastor, he is the personal friend and counselor of his people; as administrator, the executive head of his church, which should be his force as well as his field. These two aspects of his work are not considered in this volume; it is de voted exclusively to a consideration of the minister as priest and prophet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Pastor Such is the opportunity on which the writer of these introductory pages seizes, for addressing his appeal to his honoured brethren of every name, and more especially to the clergy of his own church, with the view of carrying on Baxter's great design, and reviving the power of true religion amongst them. May he open his heart in all simplicity? May he at least, after thirty or forty years' observation, sug gest to his younger brethren something which may tend, under the blessing of God, to promote a re turn to primitive zeal and love amongst the clergy? May he be permitted to admonish and rouse his own conscience, Whilst he attempts to excite others? And 0, blessed Spirit of Christ descend Thou upon the writer and the readers of these pages! Vouch safe success! Fulfil thy gracious office, as the comforter of the Church, by touching our hearts, and reviving thy work effectually amongst us! Let thy ministers be open to thy reproofs, and hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches! In the first place, then, your attention, honoured and beloved brethren in Christ, shall be directed to some topics of humiliation; in the next, to some grounds of hope; and, lastly, to several points of duty, as subservient to a revival of pure Christianity amongst us.
