Book excerpt: This book provides a reference to analysis techniques of common cooling water system problems and a historical perspective on solutions to chronic cooling water system problems, such as corrosion and biofouling. It covers best design practices for cooling water systems that are required to support the operation of all electric power plants. Plant engineers will gain better understanding of the practical issues associated with their cooling water systems and new designs or modifications of their systems should consider the actual challenges to the systems. The book is intended for graduate students and practicing engineers working in both nuclear and fossil power plants and industrial facilities that use large amounts of cooling water.

Book excerpt: During my 50+ years as a practicing Professional Engineer I have presented technical papers at various conferences and in technical publications. Many of these venues have been long since forgotten and most of these papers are no longer retrievable. In my opinion, some of these papers are worthy of preservation, as they have contributed to the advancement of the engineering of balance-of-plant mechanical systems in electric power plants. To remedy this situation, I offer this book containing my older papers. More recently (since about 2012) I have had my papers published by the ASME which required me to surrender copyright, so I cannot include them in this book. However, Appendix A contains a list of those papers which should be available from the ASME in perpetuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chuck Bowman Associates, Inc. has trained hundreds of practicing system and design engineers in the nuclear industry in heat exchanger analysis and thermodynamics. In the past the author has been asked to provide the training material contained in this book for on-site training by others. These requests have been denied for obvious reasons. However, after 50+ years as a practicing Professional Engineer the principal author has retired and now makes this material available at a reasonable cost. The course should be taught by a qualified, experienced mechanical engineer who would be familiar with this material. However, much of the information contained herein is captured in greater detail in the authors' books Thermal Engineering of Nuclear Power Stations - Balance of Plant Systems and Engineering of Power Plant and Industrial Cooling Water Systems, both published by the CRC Press. These books may be viewed as teacher's guide and companions to this material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with the law of forces, free-body diagrams, basic information on materials strength including stresses and strains. It further discusses principles of transmission of power and elementary designs of gears, spring, etc. This part concludes with mechanical vibrations, — their importance, types, isolation and critical speed. The second part, Thermal Engineering, deals with basics and laws of thermodynamics; pure substances and their properties. It further includes laws of heat transfer, insulation, and heat exchanges. This part concludes with a detailed discussion on refrigeration and air conditioning. Part three, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, includes properties of fluids, measurement of pressure, Bernoull's equation, hydraulic turbine, pumps and various other hydraulic devices. Part four, Manufacturing Technology, mainly deals with various manufacturing processes such as metal forming, casting, cutting, joining, welding, surface finishing and powder metallurgy. It further deals with conventional and non-conventional machining techniques, fluid power control and automation including hydraulic and pneumatic systems and automation of mechanical systems. Part five, Automobile Engineering deals with various aspects of IC and SI engines and their classification, etc. Four- and two-stroke engines also find place in this section. Next, systems in automobiles including suspension and power transmission systems, starting, ignition, charging and fuel injection systems. The last section deals with power plant engineering and energy. It includes power plant layout, surface condensers, steam generators, boilers and gas turbine plants. It concludes with renewable, non- renewable, conventional and non-conventional sources of energy, and energy conversion devices.

It is used as a coolant and industrial activities dealing with power generation, steel and iron, paper and pulp and oil require very large amounts of water. The industry, therefore, resorts to large scale abstraction of water from natural water bodies. This water is often treated with chemicals to combat operational problems like biofouling and corrosion. Such withdrawal and subsequent discharge of large amounts of water have the potential to impart significant impact on the recipient water body. The organisms drawn along with the cooling water, as well as those residing at the discharge zone, are subjected to a combination of mechanical, thermal and chemical stress on a continuous basis.
