Book excerpt: Countries that have suffered ethnic or religious conflict and become segregated societies reflect these divisions in education provision for their children. Northern Ireland is a case study in point where a parallel system of schools offers education in Catholic maintained schools and Protestant (de facto) controlled schools. While school segregation is the most obvious manifestation of Northern Ireland's fractured society, there are more important issues of 'educational inequality' with respect to schools and pupils. This book analyses three issues in some detail: segregation, educational performance and inequality in educational outcomes between schools and between pupils from deprived and affluent family backgrounds. Thus far public policies to tackle these issues have been met with limited success. The authors consider an alternative approach, which they term 'shared education', the aim of which is to improve school performance and, in so doing, to dismantle some of the barriers between maintained and controlled schools.

With specific attention to the case of Northern Ireland and the Local and Global Citizenship (LGC) initiative, the book investigates the faltering progress to develop and teach school curricula aimed at promoting citizenship as well as peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding. Following an overview of the scholarship on citizenship education, the author provides a broad social and political historical context within which to understand the educational reforms and changes that have taken place in Northern Ireland, highlighting various education initiatives of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s that sought to foster understanding of "the other" and promote reconciliation. The book’s focus then shifts to the implementation of LGC, which began in 2007. Despite initially strong political support and a considerable investment in terms of financial and human resources, LGC has had limited impact. The book analyzes the obstacles impeding its success, which include marginalization within the curriculum and competing conceptions of the purpose of education. A concluding chapter reflects upon what we can learn from LGC’s implementation and highlights innovative recent initiatives to bring the young people of Northern Ireland together. Book excerpt: This thesis contributes to theories of conflict regulation by showing that formal education, while furthering the short-term stability of power-sharing by reproducing its core narratives and hierarchies, may also plant the seeds of future conflicts. It concludes that consociations may generate consociational education systems, which help reproduce the basic building blocks of political consociations: mutually exclusive confessional, ethnic, national and political communities. A paradox characterises consociational education systems. Initiatives that promote unity and integration in schools tend to generate backlashes against assimilation. To further social cohesion and transition out of conflict, education reforms need to accommodate the separate institutions and mutually exclusive identity-forming narratives of the local communities in question.

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

He describes and analyses major areas of experience and methods of adapting to school for both the children and their teachers; school experience is shown to be widely varying from boredom, despair and humiliation, to gaiety, exultation and comradeship some of it officially and some of it unofficially sponsored. The description reveals a number of marked and interpenetrating divisions within schools: between teachers and pupils, parents and teachers, parents and children and between pupils themselves. These divisions are explored, analysed and related both to institutional factors and to factors outside the school. The study suggests how these factors influence pupil and teacher strategies, and hence how the details of school life relates to wider society.
