This book was released on 1985 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is currently an increasing interest in the study of the dielectric and electrical properties of biological materials, and of the ways in which tissues interact with electromagnetic fields. The seven invited contributions presented here provide excellent examples of some of the important studies in this field of scientific endeavor. The papers provide information in reference to: Forces on Biological Particles in Electric Fields; Volume and Shape Changes of Human Erythocytes Induced by Electrical Fields; Dielectric Spectroscopy and Membrane Organization; Dielectric Properties of Frozen Biological Material; The Biomolecular Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation. Classical or Quantum Physics?; Dielectric Properties of Biomacromolecules; Some Aspects of Relevance to Biological Systems; and Complex Permittivity Differences between Normal and Pathological Tissues; Mechanisms and Medical Significance. Original articles in this volume include: Potential Difference across the Nuclear Membrane: A Regulator of Gene Expression; Partial Amnesia for a Narrative Following Application of Theta Frequency Electromagnetic Fields; Mechanisms and Physiologic Significance of Microwave Action on the Auditory System; Behavioral Studies with Electromagnetic Fields: Implication for Psychobiology; A Graphic Comparison between the Current-Voltage Curves of an Electrochemical Generator and Living Unstressed Rabbit Tibia; Nucleic Acid and Protein Synthesis in Cultured Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) Cells Exposed to the Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields.

Book excerpt: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has sponsored research and personnel safety standards development for exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR) for over twenty years. The Aerospace Medical Panel of the Advisory Group For Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) sponsored Lecture Series No. 78 Radiation Hazards,! in 1975, in the Netherlands, Germany, and Norway, on the subject of Radiation Hazards to provide a review and critical analysis of the available information and concepts. In the same year, Research Study Group 2 on Protection of Personnel Against Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Radiation (Panel VIIl of AC/243 Defence Research Group, NATO) proposed a revision to Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2345. The intent of the proposal was to revise the ST ANAG to incorporate frequency-dependent-RFR safety guidelines. These changes are documented in the NATO STANAG 2345 (MED), Control and Recording of Personnel Exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation,2 promulgated in 1979. Research Study Group 2 (RSG2) of NATO Defense Research Group Panel VIII (AC1243) was organized, in 1981, to study and contribute technical information concerning the protection of military personnel from the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. A workshop at the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, U. K. was held to develop and/or compile sufficient knowledge on the long-term effects of pulsed RFR to maintain safe procedures and to minimize unnecessary operational constraints.

Book excerpt: Bioengineering and Biophysical Aspects of Electromagnetic Fields primarily contains discussions on the physics, engineering, and chemical aspects of electromagnetic (EM) fields at both the molecular level and larger scales, and investigates their interactions with biological systems. The first volume of the bestselling and newly updated Handbook of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Third Edition, this book adds material describing recent theoretical developments, as well as new data on material properties and interactions with weak and strong static magnetic fields. Newly separated and expanded chapters describe the external and internal electromagnetic environments of organisms and recent developments in the use of RF fields for imaging. Bioengineering and Biophysical Aspects of Electromagnetic Fields provides an accessible overview of the current understanding on the scientific underpinnings of these interactions, as well as a partial introduction to experiments on the interactions themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of dielectric properties of biological systems and their components is important not only for fundamental scientific knowledge but also for its applications in medicine, biology, and biotechnology. The associated technique - known as dielectric spectroscopy - has enabled researchers to quickly and accurately acquire time- or frequency-spectra of permittivity and conductivity and permitted the derivation and testing of realistic electrical models for cells and organelles. This text covers the theoretical basis and practical aspects of the study of dielectric properties of biological systems, such as water, electrolyte and polyelectrolytes, solutions of biological macromolecules, cells suspensions and cellular systems. The authors' combined efforts provide a comprehensive and cohesive book that takes advantage of the expertise of multiple scientists involved in cutting-edge research in the specific sub-fields of bio-dielectric spectroscopy while maintaining its self-consistency through numerous discussions. The first six chapters cover theoretical, methodological and experimental aspects of relaxation and dispersion in biological dielectrics at molecular, cellular and cellular aggregate level. Applications are presented in the following chapters which are organized in the order of increased complexity, beginning with pure water, amino acids and proteins, continuing with vesicles and simple cells such as erythrocytes, and then with more complex, organelle-containing cells and cellular aggregates. Due to its broad coverage, the text could be used as a reference book by researchers, and as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate classes and graduate classes in (bio) physics, medical physics, quantitative biology, and engineering.
