Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big dams built for irrigation, power, water supply, and other purposes were among the most potent symbols of economic development for much of the twentieth century. Of late they have become a lightning rod for challenges to this vision of development as something planned by elites with scant regard for environmental and social consequences—especially for the populations that are displaced as their homelands are flooded. In this book, Sanjeev Khagram traces changes in our ideas of what constitutes appropriate development through the shifting transnational dynamics of big dam construction. Khagram tells the story of a growing, but contentious, world society that features novel and increasingly efficacious norms of appropriate behavior in such areas as human rights and environmental protection. The transnational coalitions and networks led by nongovernmental groups that espouse such norms may seem weak in comparison with states, corporations, and such international agencies as the World Bank. Yet they became progressively more effective at altering the policies and practices of these historically more powerful actors and organizations from the 1970s on. Khagram develops these claims in a detailed ethnographic account of the transnational struggles around the Narmada River Valley Dam Projects in central India, a huge complex of thirty large and more than three thousand small dams. He offers further substantiation through a comparative historical analysis of the political economy of big dam projects in India, Brazil, South Africa, and China as well as by examining the changing behavior of international agencies and global companies. The author concludes with a discussion of the World Commission on Dams, an innovative attempt in the late 1990s to generate new norms among conflicting stakeholders.

Book excerpt: There are few issues that have greater impact on the life of mankind and the planet as a whole than the management of our most important natural resources water. This has only been realised in detail more recently by the general public as well as by many planners and decision-makers. Around the world they have begun to appropriate the critical importance of a reliable water supply for their future survival and sustainable development. Rivers are lifelines in countries like India serving different uses such as transport, agriculture, fisheries, personal hygiene and others. Conflicts over use of water resources must be settled through better water management policies. In many localities of the Earth water-related problems have become have become extremely acute, even critical. In some places they are the source of social instability and are a threat to international security. There is not the slightest doubt that, with further population increase and under the water business-as-usual scenario, these problems will become ever major acute, thus creating ever more instability. After decades of water waste, water pollution, and inability to provide basic water services to the poor we must fundamentally change the way we think about and manage water. We have to realise that water can no longer be considered to be a cheap and plentiful resource, which can be used abused or squandered without much concern for further human welfare.

Book excerpt: A guide to help planners and engineers to the improvment of future water projects. The past century of global experience on water projects is presented as the basis for creating new approaches. First-hand analyses, including 35 case studies from 25 countries, portray the influence of politicians, biologists, engineers, computer models and physicians on the spectacular successes and failures of the builders of canals and dams. By drawing on this experience, the author outlines methods for assessing, predicting and preventing major water-associated diseases around large dams, canals and irrigation systems.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reservoirs for Irrigation, Water-Power and Domestic Water-Supply: With an Account of Various Types of Dams and the Methods, Plans and Cost of Their Construction The chapter on Masonry Dams has been increased twofold by an attempt to make some mention of all the most notable dams of the world, and many that are very little known. Attention is particularly directed to Plates 1, 2, and 3, in which profiles are shown of all of the leading and better known masonry dams in existence, drawn to uniform scale for easy graphical comparison. No such complete collection of dam profiles has ever before appeared in print, assembled together on a common basis.
