Book excerpt: The business of cruise tourism in recent years has commanded news media attention especially on issues of environmental pollution, passenger safety and worker rights, yet consumer interest in cruise vacations has not been adversely affected by negative publicity and it continues to grow at an average of 8-9% per annum. This unique mode of business focusing on the production and consumption of pleasure at sea and on land offers us an unprecedented opportunity to analyze the manner in which ongoing economic restructuring processes to bring about free markets in goods, services and labour can and does involve both life on land and at sea. This interdisciplinary analysis elicits an examination of states' relationship to the maritime regulatory structure governing ship ownership, management and operations, cruise lines' business strategies, development of port communities to capture cruise-related revenue, changing leisure consumption patterns and meanings, and the employment of foreign migrant workers as seafarers.

Book excerpt: Despite representing a fairly small fraction of global tourism activity, the cruise sector has been experiencing a steady growth rate over the last years. The 1st International Cruise Conference (ICC) and its proceedings documented here face the changes which accompany this process of growth. The corresponding refereed papers are organized under the following themes: New trends and innovations, human resource management, information technology and standardization. The underlying motivation behind this collection of works is to bridge the gap between cruise theory and practice, by providing a ‘living research agenda’ aligned with the cruise sector’s realities and needs.

Book excerpt: Research Paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: -, London Business School (London Business School / INSEAD), language: English, comment: London Business School / INSEAD, abstract: This report examines the subject of profitable growth in the modern cruise industry by comparing the financial and operating performance and the management practices of the two leading cruise operators, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, over the twelve-year period from 1996 to 2007. During the past 40 years the cruise industry has evolved from a form of mere transoceanic transportation to an alternative vacation at sea. Despite growing at a CAGR of 7.7% since 1980, the penetration rate for the cruise industry is only 17%. In North America alone the cruise industry generated $20.6 billion in 2006. By comparison, the lodging industry in North America generated revenues of $133.4 billion during the same year. The cruise industry remains a relatively young industry. This is proven by the fact that, of the 168 million passengers that have cruised globally since 1990, 72% cruised in the past ten years and 43% in the past five years alone. The cruise industry has continually expanded to meet or boost demand: 40 new ships were built in the 1980s, 80 new ships were built in the 1990s, and 46 new ships are scheduled to enter the global market within the next four years. Even though there are more than 30 brands of cruise lines, only two companies dominate this industry: Carnival Corp & Plc (CCL) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL). The cruise industry remains highly segmented by product-with a variety of brands targeting a wide array of price points, consumer needs, and itineraries-but by the end of 2007 Carnival and Royal Caribbean alone controlled about two-thirds of the global capacity, with shares of 45% and 21% respectively. Back in 1987, their estimated combined share of global capacity was only 11%. Up until 2000

Book excerpt: In Cruising to Profits, a very thought-provoking book, co-authors and airline strategy and profitability experts Ricardo Pilon and Kofi Sonokpon share transformational strategies and tools they conclude would contribute to a fundamental shift in turning commercial aviation into a profitable business. Some radical, but necessarily drastic, views and methodologies are offered. The content is primarily based on their practical airline management and business consulting experience, but also combines results from the authors' academic involvement in airline economics with management science. The authors introduce a three-pillar visionary leadership framework BeProFit-able (BPF) that redefines the role of commercial aviation. They further discuss the human element in profitability and advance T.A.L.E.N.T. and Vision Load Factor (VLF) instruments. Lastly, Cruising to Profits offers valuable, actionable management tools so as to execute on the vision and include day-to-day operations towards commercial airline strategy formulation. BeProFit-able (BPF) WHAT visionary leadership framework and management methodology it would take to turn commercial aviation into a profitable business and HOW to apply a unique combination of business model expertise with modern convergent governance. Vision Load Factor (VLF) WHY most airlines are consistently running well below their true potential and HOW to measure and deliver on an airline's vision load factor in a profitable manner. T.A.L.E.N.T. WHY even the most talented airline employees must meet the T.A.L.E.N.T. criteria before they can positively contribute to profitability and HOW to attract and retain true talents. First in a series of eye-opener work, Cruising to Profits is a must-read for those at the heart of senior airline management and those who take a close interest in the business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewing transportation through the lens of current social, economic, and policy aspects, this four-volume reference work explores the topic of transportation across multiple disciplines within the social sciences and related areas, including geography, public policy, business, and economics. The book’s articles, all written by experts in the field, seek to answer such questions as: What has been the legacy, not just economically but politically and socially as well, of President Eisenhower’s modern interstate highway system in America? With that system and the infrastructure that supports it now in a state of decline and decay, what’s the best path for the future at a time of enormous fiscal constraints? Should California politicians plunge ahead with plans for a high-speed rail that every expert says—despite the allure—will go largely unused and will never pay back the massive investment while at this very moment potholes go unfilled all across the state? What path is best for emerging countries to keep pace with dramatic economic growth for their part? What are the social and financial costs of gridlock in our cities? Features: Approximately 675 signed articles authored by prominent scholars are arranged in A-to-Z fashion and conclude with Further Readings and cross references. A Chronology helps readers put individual events into historical context; a Reader’s Guide organizes entries by broad topical or thematic areas; a detailed index helps users quickly locate entries of most immediate interest; and a Resource Guide provides a list of journals, books, and associations and their websites. While articles were written to avoid jargon as much as possible, a Glossary provides quick definitions of technical terms. To ensure full, well-rounded coverage of the field, the General Editor with expertise in urban planning, public policy, and the environment worked alongside a Consulting Editor with a background in Civil Engineering. The index, Reader’s Guide, and cross references combine for thorough search-and-browse capabilities in the electronic edition. Available in both print and electronic formats, Encyclopedia of Transportation is an ideal reference for libraries and those who want to explore the issues that surround transportation in the United States and around the world.
