Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carabidae form one of the largest and best studied families of insects, occurring in nearly every terrestrial habitat. The contributions included in this book cover a broad spectrum of recent research into this beetle family, with an emphasis on various aspects of ecology and evolution. They deal both with individual carabid species, for example in studies on population and reproductive biology or life history in general, and with ground beetle communities, as exemplified in papers treating assemblages in natural habitats, on agricultural land and in forests. Disciplines range from biogeography and faunistics, over morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, ecophysiology and functional ecology, to population, community, conservation and landscape ecology. This volume is the result of the 8th European Carabidologists' Meeting, 2nd International Symposium of Carabidology, September 1-4, 1992, Belgium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing numbers of research workers and groups of investigators devoting themselves to the ecology of carabids I felt that the time had come to take stock of the existing knowledge in this field and to endeavour to weld my personal results and those of other workers into a comprehensive picture. It was with these aims in mind that the following study was conceived. A further goal was to attempt to show to what extent research on carabids can contribute to the larger fields of research encompassing ecology, ethology and evolution. In my opinion the investigations on carabids permit us to draw conclusions of general applicability and, as such, comparable with those made in recent years upon other groups of animals. I am well aware of the risk involved nowadays in attempting, on one's own, to integrate results from a wide variety of scientific disciplines into a meaningful whole, and for this reason I am always grateful for corrections and for additional information. It is impossible for me to mention by name all of the col leagues who have given me their support in the preparation of the book. Reprints of their publications have been placed at my disposal by almost all of the authors cited, as well as by others whose names and works have been omitted merely in order to prevent the book from taking on encyclopedic pro portions. I am nevertheless indebted to them all for their cooperation.

This book was released on 2013-08-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 101 Mecyclothorax carabid beetle species of Tahiti, French Polynesia comprise a very diverse adaptive radiation. Given Tahiti?s surface area of only 1,045 km2, the island?s Mecyclothorax fauna represents the densest, most diverse radiation of species on Earth. Speciation of Tahitian Mecyclothorax has also occurred very rapidly, with closely-related species allopatrically distributed across geographic ranges defined by Tahiti?s incredibly complex geological topography. Such high levels of endemism are useful for conservation management, as continuing presence of these beetles in small areas of Tahitian forest can signify good health of the native biota in those areas. This taxonomic revision includes dichotomous keys and diagnostic photographs supporting identification of all 101 species, over one-quarter newly described in this publication. Each species treatment includes ecological and geographical information. This monograph illuminates an important component of Tahitian biodiversity in support of ongoing efforts to conserve Tahiti?s biological resources.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of the natural history of the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae; over 2400 taxa) from North America north of Mexico is presented. Under each taxon, the ecology, biology, dispersal power, collecting techniques, and selected references are given. The section on ecology comprises the following: altitudinal distribution, habitat, diel activity, and gregariousness. The section dealing with biology gives details on seasonality, mating, gravid females or oviposition, tenerals, overwintering, feeding, predation, parasitism, and defense-mechanism. The section on dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, has been assessed when possible, using three main criteria: wing condition, flight data (including light-trapping observations), and other locomotory habits. The section on collecting techniques provides the best means of capture. The section references lists the most relevant papers, with appropriate key-words. An exhaustive bibliography dealing with the natural history of North American Carabidae is also provided. This work follows the Catalogue of Bousquet and Larochelle (1993) Catalogue of the Geadephaga (Coleoptera: Trachypachydae, Rhysodidae, Carabidae including Cicindelini of America north of Mexico, which provided nomenclatural and distributional information on North American ground-beetles. An indispensable tool for anybody interested in ground-beetles, as well as to libraries due to the increadable amount of information summarised in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents and analyzes the results of more than 30 years of long-term ecological research in riparian forest ecosystems with the aim of casting light on changes in the dynamics of riparian forests over time. The research, focusing on the Ooyamazawa riparian forest, one of the remaining old-growth forests in Japan, has yielded a number of interesting outcomes. First, it shows that large-scale disturbances afford various trees opportunities for regeneration and are thus the driving force for the coexistence of canopy trees in riparian forests. Second, it identifies changes in reproductive patterns, highlighting that seed production has in fact quantitatively increased over the past two decades. Third, it describes the decline in forest floor vegetation caused by deer grazing and reveals how this decline has affected bird and insect populations. The book illustrates the interconnectedness of phenomena within an ecosystem and the resultant potential for cascade effects and also stresses the need for long-term ecological studies of climate change impacts on forests. It will be of interest to both professionals and academics in the field of forest science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides keys for the identification of the known larvae of Carabidae (ground beetles) of Fennoscandia and Denmark. It is partly based on a manuscript by the late S.G. Larsson, and is supplementary to the two volumes in this series by C.H. Lindroth on adult Carabidae. After sections outlining the features, biology and study of carabid larvae, the bulk of the volume consists of keys and individual descriptions of all the species whose larvae are known. The book is profusely illustrated with nearly 600 figures. The volume will be invaluable to all who need to identify carabid larvae from Northern Europe, and provides the only complete and detailed text, including specific descriptions, of the larvae of this important group of beetles.

This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with a group of arboreal ground beetles which is recognized as Physoderina, a subtribe of Lebiini mainly distributes in Oriental Region, with a few species also occur in Africa. These beetles were known for their small and colorful appearance. The taxonomy at both generic and specific levels was quite confused. Therefore revision of the subtribe is very necessary. A total of ten genera are recognized and keyed in the present monograph, and several of them are redefined and redescribed. Generic delimitation in Physoderina is mainly presented by the internal sac sclerite of male aedeagus and secondary sexual characters. Species of eight genera are revised with the exception of African Dasiosoma ones. These species are described and illustrated, accompanied by 157 photographs. This monograph is an indispensable tool for anybody interested in taxonomic and faunistic aspects on Oriental Physoderina of Lebiini.
